Carleton House is a Catholic private preparatory school in Liverpool, England that educates children from the ages of 3–11. It is a member of the Independent Schools Association and is overseen by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
History

[edit]The precursor to Carleton House was the Catholic preparatory school Woolton Hall which was established in the 1950s[1] following the Second World War in Woolton Hall. The school was maintained by the Convent of Notre Dame, a group of Catholic Nuns in Liverpool.[2] In 1970 Woolton Hall Preparatory School merged with Notre Dame High School to form Notre Dame Woolton.[3] As a result of the dissolution of Woolton Hall, a group of parents of the school came together, and in 1974 established Carleton House to preserve the traditions and values of a unique Catholic preparatory school.
Buildings History
[edit]Carleton House (and its forerunner) have occupied three sites throughout their history. The first site Occupied by Woolton Hall Preparatory School was Woolton Hall, a Classical Grade-I listed stately home used as a military hospital during the Second World war. The Sisters of the Convent of Notre Dame converted it to a School.[3] In recent years Woolton Hall has fallen into disuse.
In 1974 after the dissolution of Woolton Hall Prep and the Establishment of Carleton House, the new School took ownership of Carleton House, a 19th Century home on Lyndhurst Road in Mossley Hill. The School remained there for over 30 Years. The original Carleton House building has since been converted into flats.
In 2009 the school moved to its current location inside the former stately home Beechenhurst, keeping the namesake of its previous location.[4] The current building was constructed around 1876 for Sir Edward Percy Bates, 2nd Baronet, an East India Company Merchant and the son of Sir Edward Bates, 1st Baronet. At the time of his death the property passed to his second son Percy Bates, Chairman of the Cunard Line later know as Cunard-White Star Line.[5] In 1957 it became Beechenhurst Preparatory school, a Church of England independent school; after its closure in 2008 the site was purchased by Carleton House.[6]
Constitution and charity
[edit]The School is a registered charity (No. 505310) with the goal of providing education and training to children and young people in the Liverpool City Region,[7] whilst upholding the links to the Catholic faith. It is governed by a board of trustees.
In 2023 Carleton had a total gross income of £1.76 Million.[7]
The School also supports other charitable endeavours. In 2016 it supported a campaign to assist the Charity Support dogs. The campaign raised £20,000 and involved a stunt in which the headmistress of the school skydived from an plane.[8]

As a Catholic school, Carleton maintains close links with the Archdiocese of Liverpool. Its choir has performed in the Archdioceses Cathedral[10] and the Parish of Our Lady of the Annunciation (Bishop Eton).[11] Carleton also maintains a close relationship to St Mary's College another Catholic private school in the area. The school welcomes children of all faiths, with approximately half of the students being Roman Catholic.[12]
Carleton maintains a traditional private school uniform, including caps, shorts, blazers and ties, with female students wearing bonnets.[13]
SATs results in 2022 saw Carleton pupils scoring an average of 110, compared to the national average of 100.[14] The following year 100% of students achieved on or above the national average in English, and GPS with 95% achieving this in maths and writing.[15] Carleton also fields competitive junior teams in football, cross country, and swimming competing within Liverpool Junior School leagues as well as Regional and National Leagues.[16]
Students from Carleton have been known to pass the entry exam to the Liverpool Blue Coat School, a grammar school in Liverpool, with Carleton having a reputation for being a feeder school for the grammar school. Some also attend other Liverpool schools, such as St Mary's College, Liverpool College, and Merchant Taylors' School.[17]
Each year group (Reception to Year 6) has approximately 23 students.[18]
The School's mascot is Carleton Mouse, who was featured as the protagonist in a Christmas book, set in the school, authored by Helen Yoxall Burns titled "Carleton's Motto Saves the Grotto" published in 2022.[19] A follow up to the Christmas themed book set at the school was released in 2023.[20][21]
