The American Sports Builders Association (ASBA)

[edit]

The American Sports Builders Association is a national trade organization for builders, designers and suppliers of materials for sports facilities. It is a not-for-profit organization whose membership, while primarily American, includes internationally based companies and individuals as well.

History

[edit]

The organization was founded in 1965 as the U.S. Tennis Court & Track Builders Association (USTC&TBA) by a group of contractors who wanted to create an organization to help them address mutual problems, set industry standards and provide information on issues pertinent to their businesses.

In 2004, the USTC&TBA rebranded as the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA), in order to reflect the broader scope of work performed by its members. Members still designed, built and maintained tennis courts and running tracks, but were also working on a wider range of other facilities, including pickleball courts, padel courts, sports fields made of synthetic turf and natural grass, as well as gymnasiums and other venues.

Meetings

[edit]

The organization hosts two meetings per year. Its Technical Meeting, held in December, includes educational sessions as well as a trade show. Its Winter Meeting, held in February, includes meetings of the board of directors, editorial committees of its various publications (see below), and meetings of committees and membership divisions (Courts, Tracks, Fields and Indoor Sports Surfaces).

Publications

[edit]

The association produces a number of publications; these include the following:

Tennis Courts: Construction and Maintenance Manual (published in coordination with the United States Tennis Association)

Pickleball Courts: Construction and Maintenance Manual (published in coordination with USA Pickleball)

Running Tracks: Construction and Maintenance Manual

Sports Fields: Construction and Maintenance Manual

Courts & Recreational Surfaces: Construction and Maintenance Manual

The organization also publishes a quarterly magazine, Build It Right.

Educational Initiatives

[edit]

The association sponsors educational initiatives; these include ASBA Academy, which offers courses in construction of sports facilities for those new to the industry. ASBA also offers an online program, E-Learning, which includes courses at different levels.

Work with Industry Organizations

[edit]

ASBA works with governing bodies and leadership organizations for sports to provide input on rule changes that affect construction of sports facilities. Organizations include the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), USA Track & Field, USA Pickleball, the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Publication of Technical Articles

[edit]

ASBA creates peer-reviewed technical content for trade and industry publications, including Parks & Recreation Magazine (published by National Recreation and Park Association), SportsField Management (published by the Sports Field Management Association), Athletic Administrator (published by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association), Coach & Athletic Director, Park & Rec Business, Fence News USA, Racquet Sports Industry and LD&A (Lighting Design and Application), published by the Illuminating Engineering Society.

Awards Program

[edit]

ASBA sponsors an annual awards program to encourage outstanding design and construction in sports facilities. It also offers discretionary awards that honor individual contributions to the association and the industry.

Certification Program

[edit]

In order to continue to promote good construction, and to raise professional standards, the organization developed and began offering its voluntary certification program. All certifications are renewable every three years. The following certifications are offered:

Tennis Certified Tennis Court Builder (CTCB)

Track Certified Track Builder (CTB)

Certified Track Builder-Striper (CTB-S)

Certified Field Builder (CFB)

Alternatively, field builders can elect to pursue certification in only one discipline, with the designation of Certified Field Builder-Natural Turf (CFB-N) or Certified Field Builder-Synthetic Turf (CFB-S).

The association also offers a certificate program in pickleball court construction.

American Sports Builders Foundation

[edit]

In 2023, the organization created the American Sports Builders Foundation, its philanthropic arm, which has the dual goal of funding college scholarships for students interested in pursuing careers in the sports facility design and construction industry; and funding the construction of sports facilities in underserved areas.

Management

[edit]

ASBA is presently headquartered at and managed by the Stringfellow Management Group], based in Forest Hill, Maryland. The Executive Director is Fred Stringfellow, CAE.
