Biography

[edit]

Alessandro Bertozzi is an Italian saxophonist, composer, and arranger from Busseto, the birthplace of Giuseppe Verdi. He began studying the clarinet at the age of seven before transitioning to the saxophone. In 1984, he graduated as a master luthier from the Antonio Stradivari International School of Violin Making in Cremona, specializing in the construction of classical and modern instruments.

Career

[edit]

Bertozzi has worked as a session musician with several Italian artists, including Enrico Ruggeri, Gianni Bella, Marcella Bella, Marina Fiordaliso, Marco Masini, Drupi, and Andrea Mingardi. Alongside his session work, he has developed a solo career, releasing albums that span jazz and funk genres.

His 2020 album, Trait d'Union, was praised for its blend of jazz and African-inspired sounds, featuring lyrics in Wolof.[1] In an interview, Bertozzi described the album as an effort to connect people through music by merging various musical traditions.[2]

In 2024, Bertozzi collaborated with mezzo-soprano Anna Maria Chiuri on The Verdi Sessions Vol.1, a project that reinterprets Giuseppe Verdi's works through a jazz-fusion lens. The first single, Oh, dischiuso è il firmamento, offers a contemporary take on Verdi’s compositions.[3]
