The Bikepacking Community in Israel
[edit]Background
[edit]Bikepacking, a cycling style that combines multi-day trips with camping and carrying equipment on bikes, is gaining increasing popularity in Israel. The combination of unique trails, stunning nature, and a strong sense of community has made bikepacking a central aspect of Israel's cycling culture. This activity, born from adventure enthusiasts, offers a slower-paced riding experience, far from the competitive nature of professional cycling.
History and Development
[edit]The first event that brought bikepacking to the forefront in Israel was the HLC (Holyland Challenge), a physically and mentally demanding bikepacking race spanning the entire country. While the HLC inspired many riders, its high demands also deterred some from participating.
In 2017, Elad Bachar and the Bikepacking Community began developing a different model of bikepacking aimed at making the experience more accessible, focusing on social interaction rather than competition. Their first initiative, P2P (Point to Point), aimed to offer a multi-day riding experience that allowed for flexibility, unique nature stops, and a true sense of community.
The first P2P trail, launched in October 2017, stretched from Lehavim to Rosh Hanikra. Later, the southern section connecting Eilat to Lehavim was built. In 2021, the full trail connecting Eilat to Nahariya via the Golan Heights was completed, spanning 1,150 km and featuring 17,000 meters of cumulative climbing.
Bikepacking.co.il
[edit]In 2021, the website Bikepacking.co.il was launched as another initiative by Elad Bachar and the Bikepacking Community to serve as a central platform for anyone interested in bikepacking adventures in Israel. The bilingual site (Hebrew and English) includes:
- Detailed trail files with explanations and images.
- Tips for equipment and trip preparation.
- Unique guides for international tourists with information about Israel’s cycling culture, recommended seasons, and field navigation.
- Options to borrow or purchase recommended bikepacking gear through the site.
- Full community support, including repairs, trail updates, and suggestions for trail improvements.
Assistance for Tourists
[edit]The community aims to facilitate bikepacking experiences for tourists visiting Israel. Services include:
- Airport pickup.
- Storage for bike cases.
- Assistance in selecting a personalized trail.
- Support from trail angels, available along the routes to assist with any needs during the ride.
Key Events
[edit]The Israeli bikepacking community organizes a wide variety of events, including:
- P2P (Point to Point): A long multi-day trail from Eilat to Nahariya emphasizing communal experiences and non-competitive spirit.
- Special Events: Three-day rides featuring organized campsites, campfires, and communal time.
- Longest Day: Summer overnight events starting in the afternoon and ending the following morning.
- Beginner Bikepacking: A series of events designed to introduce new riders to the world of bikepacking by easing concerns and providing guidance and support. These free events include unique experiences such as campfires, community gatherings, and special treats supported by Trek.
Beginner Bikepacking
[edit]"Beginner Bikepacking" is a unique event designed to expose new riders to the world of bikepacking in a supportive and inspiring environment. Held two times a year, these events feature relatively easy trails and allow riders to experience bikepacking in a guided way.
All events are free of charge and typically start at a convenient meeting point, such as a Trek store branch, which provides coffee, tips, and a space to prepare. Riders embark on a two-day trail with unique stops, organized campsites, campfires, beers, and additional treats. Participants enjoy independent daytime riding and communal evening activities, where strong bonds are formed and new groups emerge.
The events cater to riders of all levels, providing full community support, equipment tips, and technical assistance during the ride. Each participant gets the opportunity to explore bikepacking at their own pace while enjoying the journey on a supportive and friendly trail.
Discover Israel Race
[edit]This is currently the flagship event of the community. In 2024, about 40 riders participated, and in 2025, the number is expected to rise to 60. The event is characterized by full community involvement in planning, logistical support, and welcoming new riders. Stories from riders who participated can be read here: Discover Israel Race Stories.
Discover Israel Trail
[edit]The community also offers the Discover Israel Trail, built on the principles of the P2P trail but with an option to expand the original route and reach additional unique points across the country. This trail, developed collaboratively with community members, allows access to diverse areas through different landscapes. More information about the trail and possible extensions can be found here: Discover Israel Trail Extensions.
Support and Partnerships
[edit]One of the unique aspects of the Israeli bikepacking community is the full support it receives from Trek, which contributes equipment, provides meeting points during events, and supports logistics and trail development. Trek's support helps maintain high-quality, accessible events for all riders.
Future Projects
[edit]Currently, the community is working on another ambitious project: developing a new trail that will cross the country from south to north, specifically tailored for gravel riders. This new trail will combine gravel paths, scenic routes, and light off-road trails to enhance accessibility and attract new audiences.
Cultural and Social Impact
[edit]The Israeli bikepacking community represents a shift in the local cycling scene. It emphasizes the shared riding experience, enjoyment of the journey, and connection to nature and friends. The trails and events support local communities along the routes through purchases and stays in small settlements.
Community events create opportunities to forge new friendships, share experiences, and break down barriers between novice and veteran riders.
The Trails
[edit]Bikepacking trails in Israel cater to various difficulty levels, from the classic P2P trail to shorter and more beginner-friendly routes. The emphasis on diverse landscapes – from the southern desert to the lush north – makes Israel a unique destination for bikepacking.
Podcasts and Media
[edit]On the podcast "Traveling Lightly," hosted by Aryeh Fischler, Elad Bachar shared the vision of the Israeli Bikepacking Community. He discussed the process of creating events, overcoming challenges, and highlighting the strong connection between community, trails, and experiences. You can listen to the podcast episode here: Traveling Lightly - Episode 40.
