Project 7 (Korean: 프로젝트7) is a 2024 South Korean boy group reality competition survival show created by JTBC. It folllowed the process of creating a new global boy group. It premiered on JTBC on October 18, 2024, and aired every Friday at 20:50 (KST). The show ended on December 27, 2024, with the formation of a seven-member boy group named Close Your Eyes.
Concept
[edit]Project 7 is a differentiated new concept idol audition program that introduces the concept of 'assembly' and 'reinforcement', where viewers move away from the perspective of observers who only participate through voting and directly select contestants for each round from the first round, form new teams, and develop their favorite contestants through this process.[1]
Production and Background
[edit]The program was co-directed by Ma Gun-young and Chae Sung-wook. It was co-produced by Studio Slam and SLL.[1]
On April 20, 2024, JTBC revealed teasers inviting any male to apply for the show. The program will be produced by the creators of Sing Again and will air in the second half of 2024.
The theme song, "Run (Up To You)" (Korean: 달려 (Up To You)) was released on September 24, 2024, accompanied by a performance of the song the next day by the 100 contestants.[2]
Lee Soo-hyuk, was recruited as Project 7 host.[3] The panel also includes Lee Hae-in, Ha Sung-woon, Bada Lee, Hi-Hat Entertainment performance director Ryu D, as well as prominent songwriter and producer Ryan S. Jhun.[4]

Signal Song Test (Episode 2-3)
[edit]In this mission, trainees are to divide themselves up into 5 groups of 20, which become their units for this mission. The trainees are to prepare the vocals and the choreography of the signal song of the show, 'Run (Up To You)'. After preparations, trainees are to film a video of themselves performing individually, and all the video will be shown to the judges. Each trainee gets scored individually. Following all the trainees video scoring, all the scores for each unit are added together to determine the interim unit rankings. After the interim rankings, the directors reveal that there will be a team evaluation which will determine the final unit rankings. The unit rank determines where the members of each unit stand on the pyramid stage where they will perform and film the official video for the signal song. The highest ranking unit stand in the Tier 1 Zone, down to Tier 4 Zone onstage. The lowest ranking unit stands in the Shadow Zone, which situates on the floor underneath the Tier 4 Zone in the pyramid. The trainees in the Shadow Zone would not have any singing parts, they would just have backup vocals and serve as support to the rest of the trainees. As a benefit for receiving the highest rank, one member from the unit with the highest rank will have the chance to become the center of the performance, getting to stand at the highest point of the pyramid, in the very center of everyone.

Position Match (Episode 3-4)
[edit]In this mission, trainees are to divide themselves up into units of varying numbers. The trainees are presented with three positions with four songs each. Vocal has 'Love me or Leave Me' by Day6, 'Don't Go' by Exo, 'We Must Love' by ONF, & 'Love Wins All' by IU. Dance gets 'Kiwi' by Harry Styles, 'Closer' by The Chainsmokers, 'Pop' by NSYNC, & '3D' by Jungkook. Rap receives 'Shalala' by Taeyong, 'Crayon' by G-Dragon, 'Work' by Ateez, & Mommae by Jay Park. Each position also comes with their own specific challenge; Vocal teams must participate in the arrangement of the song, Dance teams must rechoreograph a certain section of their song, and Rap teams must write their own rap for a certain section of their song. The order in which the trainees head up to the area of choice is of position revealed, trainees who wish to be vocalists go to Vocal, etc. for Dance, and then Rap, but this order is insignificant, as anyone can get dropped from anywhere immediately after. Speaking of, after the initial selection, any team with any number of overflow members has to kick out as many overflows as necessary. Once the units are narrowed down to the appropriate number, the kicked out trainees would have to reorganize themselves into the remaining units that had leftover spots. The parts for this mission are decided by the trainees themselves, mainly for the Center position. Each trainee in a unit is to vote for another member of their unit to be the center and the recipient of the most votes would assume the role in most cases. Following the performances, the 500 World Assemblers present at the live show, as well as the five Directors would vote for the best performance out of each category, and the members of the recipient unit of the most votes would receive 20 000 points each to be added to their voting score. The 500 World Assemblers would also participate in a vote for the MVP of each position, voting for the contestant they think did the best per unit. The single contestant who received the most votes amongst everyone in the same position would receive 100 000 points to be added to their voting score.

Rival Match (Episode 6-7)
[edit]During the first assembly ceremony, surviving contestants were assembled into five teams, A1 through A5, based on the fans' assembly votes. Each team would get two songs from the same artist, options being Monsta X, NCT (all units), Stray Kids, TXT, and Riize, and the artist for each team would be decided by a quick minigame. By the end, A1 got Riize, A2 got Monsta X, A3 got Stray Kids, A4 got NCT, and A5 got TXT. The show initially hinted that each assembly would be a full team, but it is later revealed that each team will be divided in two, with each half competing against each other, each taking one song from the two revealed prior to the separation revalation rather than choosing one song for the whole team. The highest ranked contestant in each team (A1: Kwon Yonghyun, A2: Sakurada Kenshin, A3: Jeon Minwook, A4: Yichen, A5: Ok Changhyeon) picked his members to form their team (White Team), with the remaining members forming the other team (Black Team). The benefit for this mission is a little different compared to your usual benefit of a set number of points. The winning team between each pair of teams will receive the steal benefit. Based on how the trainees ranked in both teams by audience vote, the members of the overall winning team will be able to steal from 70 000 vote points, down to 10 000, from members of the losing team. The number of points stolen works as follows; the highest-ranked member in the winning team will take the most vote points (70 000) from the lowest ranking member in the losing team. It continues as follows with the 2nd highest in the winning team taking 60 000 from the second lowest from the losing team, the third highest in the winning team taking 50 000 from the third lowest from the losing team, etc.

Final Match (Episode 11-12)
[edit]During the third elimination, surviving contestants were each assigned to one of three songs for the finale live show, being Psycho, Act Up, and Antidote, making teams based on the fans' assembly votes. Unlike most of the time when contestants decide on parts collectively as a group, this time the method of pushing others out of your desired position was used. Starting from Psycho, then Antidote, then Act Up, the lowest-ranked contestant would choose their desired part first. The next contestants in line would choose their desired part, but if it were to be already occupied by another contestant, the higher-ranked contestant would have the privilege to push them out of their desired part and relocate them to another part, also regardless of if that part already has someone else there. Lastly for parts, the killing part of each song will be decided by World Assemblers, given to the contestant with the most likes on their video cumulated across all official Project 7 SNS accounts within 24 hours post-airing of Episode 11.

2nd Assembly Ceremony
[edit]The second voting period for the 2nd Assembly Ceremony took place from November 8 to November 23, 2024. The World Assemblers voted for their top seven contestants. Alongside voting for their top seven, World Assemblers would also assemble five units of seven contestants for each of the new songs introduced, each having their own concept; Neo/Urban (Breaking News), Old School/Retro (KOOL-AID), Fresh/Cool (Merry-Go-Round), Sexy/Bad (Trigger), & Nostalgic/Sentimental (Time After Time). Regarding eliminations, the top half (35) of the contestants who received the most votes got to continue onto the next round and the bottom half (35) of the contestants got officially eliminated. During the ceremony, each pair of opposing teams from the Rival Match, starting from its A1, then 5, 2, 4, and 3, would be called up to find out who is safe from elimination from each unit, excluding the Top 9 contestants, and 35th place contestant. The safe contestants would move to their ranking's seat in the stands for the time being. After ranks 10-34 were confirmed, the 35th place contestant was revealed, through the four candidate method, and then the Top 9 were revealed starting from 9th, then 7th and 8th, and then 6th down to 3rd, and finally 1st and 2nd. After the ceremony, and the eliminated contestants had left, Lee Soohyuk would call up each contestant, in rank order, and give them a number from 1–5, corresponding to 5 different rooms, which would determine each contestant's Assembly for the next mission.
