Contested deletion

[edit]

This category should not be speedy deleted as being unpopulated. It has been emptied by an editor who has created a new category, Category:Simien Mountains, covering the same topic, although the new category has not itself been categorised, so may not be visible to all interested editors. But the eponymous article Semien Mountains has not been moved. We are in danger of creating an inconsistent mess.

I do not know which is the better spelling in English. But the proper process is to propose a move of Semien Mountains, and whatever consensus is reached, apply it consistently.--Mhockey (talk) 21:38, 16 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I know nothing about categorisation (and whether you can have a redirect from a category such as the misspelt Semien Mountains to the correct English of Simien Mountains in an analogous way to the usual re-direct of an article).
However, I do know that in the English Wikipedia we usually use the most common English name rather than the accepted local spelling - eg: Moscow rather than Moskva, Venice rather than Venezia and Belgrade rather than Beograd.
If you examine most of the citations in the article currently named Semien Mountains you will see that most of the English language ones use Simien rather than Semien for these mountains.
Semien really only comes about since it is the more usual transliteration from local languages such as Amharic.
I would have moved the article myself a long time ago but I don't have the necessary privileges. BushelCandle (talk) 01:16, 17 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
