Protected wrecks in Wales

[edit]

I'm thinking about a list of Welsh Protected Wrecks, which would supplement the lists of Listed Buildings, Listed Gardens and Scheduled Monuments that we currently have. I'm struck by the fact that the details we do have, here, [[Category:Protected Wrecks of Wales]] don't appear to match the details Cadw published here, [1]. Does anyone have any idea where, other than Cadw, a definitive list can be found? Alternatively, does anyone know where the additional wrecks in our Category, SS Beemsterdijk, SS Castilian (1919), and HMS H5 have come from? Any help appreciated. I've also posted on the Shipwrecks and Wales projects. KJP1 (talk) 09:20, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@KJP1, quickly searching shows that the Maritime and Coastguard Agency also lists some for protection? with Castilian being linked to List of designations under the Protection of Wrecks Act#List of designations under section 2 of the Protection of Wrecks Act (1973), so classed as it is somewhat protected and near Wales, and H5 can be linked to this as a potential reasoning, also by the MCA. Can't locate why Beemsterdijk though. DankJae 10:38, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
DankJae - Very interesting and thanks for looking. So Castilian looks to be more akin to a Protected Area, due to its dangerous cargo, and H5 a protected site as a war grave. Perhaps they differ from Cadw's sense of a Protected Wreck due to its historical interest. Some more digging is needed! Good to see you and hope you're well.
