Background

[edit]

In 1189, King Sancho I of Portugal, with the assistance of crusaders, captured the city of Silves. In response, the Almohads launched a significant military campaign against the Kingdom of Portugal in the spring of 1190, which extended into the summer of 1191. This campaign involved several military engagements as the Almohads sought to respond to the Christian advances .[1][2]

The Conquest

[edit]

n 1191, the Almohad forces, led by Yaqub al-Mansur along with the governors of Al-Andalus, who had prepared a large army captured the city of Évora during their campaign against the Kingdom of Portugal. Évora, an important city, fell to the Almohads as part of their broader efforts to regain control over Portuguese-held territories.[3][4][5][6]

Aftermath

[edit]

As part of the Portugal campaign, Yaqub al-Mansur's military operations led to the loss of all Portuguese territories in the south of the Tagus River, including the key cities of Évora and Beja. [7][8]
