The 2012 Major League Baseball season will be the 112th common season in Major League Baseball involving both the American and National Leagues. With the current labor contract expiring after the 2011 season, an expanded playoff format adding two clubs is a possibility for 2012.[1] It has been confirmed that the regular season will start April 4 in Miami, Florida, with the opening of the New Miami Ballpark, as the newly renamed Miami Marlins will be hosting the St. Louis Cardinals, and end on October 4.[2] The entire master schedule was released on September 14, 2011.

The Major League Baseball All-Star Game's 83rd edition will be held on July 10th at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The winning league will earn home field advantage for the 2012 World Series, beginning on October 24 and scheduled to end no later than November 1. The Civil Rights Game will be held at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia.

Stadiums

Miami Ballpark

Assuming it is completed in time, the Florida Marlins will vacate Sun Life Stadium and move into their new ballpark, built on the site of the old Orange Bowl stadium, where they will rename themselves the Miami Marlins.

Anniversaries

The 2012 season will also be the 100th Anniversary of Boston's Fenway Park after being built in 1912. In addition, Dodger Stadium, which opened in 1962 and is located in the Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles, will celebrate its 50th Anniversary.

Mets, Astros golden anniversaries

The 2012 season will also mark the 50th Anniversary for the New York Mets and the Houston Astros but 51st all around. The Mets began play four years after the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants moved west in 1958 and the threat of a third Major League called the "Continental League" was floated by Branch Rickey, former Dodgers executive; while the Astros began 1962 as the Houston Colt .45s until the team moved to the Astrodome in 1965 following a dispute with Colt Firearms over revenues from souvenir sales and licencing fees. In honor of the Astros' 50th anniversary, they will don different throwback uniforms at home on Friday night themed to each decade.

Possible realignment

A June 12, 2011, report by Buster Olney on ESPN.com reported that Major League Baseball is seriously considering moving an existing National League team to the American League and giving each league 15 teams, which would require interleague play every day of the season and put MLB in line with the other three major professional sports leagues, which have similar interconference play throughout their regular seasons. The move is based on a movement by the players union to level the playing field, as the National League Central has six teams while the American League West has four teams and the remaining divisions have five teams. There has also been talk of eliminating divisions altogether—the format the two leagues had before 1969—and having five teams from each league play in the playoffs each year, although such talk has received little support.

Possible teams named in the realignment are the Houston Astros (as part of the new deal between Drayton McLane and Jim Crain, the current and future owners of the franchise) or the Arizona Diamondbacks. Should the Astros (currently NL Central) be moved, they may be aligned to the AL West and possibly form a regional rivalry with the Texas Rangers. Should the Diamondbacks (currently NL West) be moved, they may be aligned to the AL West and have the Astros move to the NL West.

The current format of 14 for the AL and 16 for the NL dates back to the 1998 season and the establishment of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks. MLB commissioner Bud Selig, owner of the Milwaukee Brewers, moved the team to the NL to avoid having to pay for a designated hitter. Lol

Uniforms

New uniforms

It has been confirmed that three teams will make wholesale changes to their uniforms in 2012.

The Marlins plan to unveil their changes on November 11, 2011, as the team is being rebranded as the Miami Marlins, [3] complete with a new logo featuring a stylized Marlin jumping over a art deco colored "M" in coral, yellow and teal according to pictures of a leaked logo, while the Toronto Blue Jays will also have new uniforms available, looking to become more like "Canada's Team", and in the process drop the black and graphite colors and return to a variation of their vintage logo used from 1977 through 2003.[4] The uniforms will be unveiled on November 17, 2011, in Toronto.

The Mets have reported that as part of their golden anniversary season, they will be modifying their home and road uniforms akin to the style worn in 1962.[5]

A new, slightly altered Dodgers logo has been leaked. The trail lines behind the ball are more accurate and they and the ball have thicker outlines. The O in the word "Dodgers" does not have the line on the bottom left.

Patches

It's expected that the Marlins, Mets, Astros, Dodgers, Red Sox and Royals will wear commemorative patches for their special seasons (new ballpark for Miami, 50th Anniversary logos for the Mets and Houston, ballpark anniversaries for the Red Sox and Dodgers and the All-Star Game for the Royals.) The Atros confirmed their logo on September 22, 2011 in a pre-game press conference at Minute Maid Park.

Television

The big story, amongst local rightsholders, is that the San Diego Padres will switch from Cox Cable-owned 4SD to a new Fox Sports Net channel that is being prepared for the San Diego area.[6]
