Zhang Fuming (張富銘) is a Singaporean artist and printmaker known for his contemporary woodcut printmaking, blending traditional methods with modern themes. His works often explore social commentary and realism, focusing on the materiality and texture of woodblocks beyond conventional paper prints.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Zhang Fuming graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2011.[1]

Career

[edit]

Zhang's practice centers on themes of ambition, societal expectations, and identity. Using woodcut techniques, he often portrays the tension between personal aspiration and external pressure. His works, such as those featuring the rice bowl motif, symbolize sustenance, status, and the delicate balance between material needs and spiritual fulfillment.[2] Through stark contrasts and dynamic textures, Zhang's prints emphasize resilience and reflect the complexities of contemporary society.[3] [4][5] In 2022, he founded Drawing Etc. Art Supplies, an artist-run store on Arab Street, Singapore, which includes a gallery and workshop space to support the local art community.[6] [7]

Awards

[edit]

Zhang received the Young Artist Award in 2024, Singapore’s highest accolade for artists aged 35 and below, recognizing his contributions to printmaking and potential for future growth.[8][9]

Additionally, he won the Young Talent Programme 2014/2015, which played a key role in supporting his early development as a printmaker.[10] [11]
