Yuika (Japanese: 『ユイカ』, born January 12, 2005) is a Japanese singer-songwriter. She become popular on TikTok after she release her song "Sukidakara".

Biography

Yuika was born on January 12, 2005.[1][2] She is from Nara Prefecture but later move to Tokyo.[3][4] She started uploading various covers of songs of other artists like Kenshi Yonezu, Mrs. Green Apple on TikTok.[5]

She debuted with a single "Sukidakara" on June 27, 2021, when she was in high school.[5][6] The song became a huge hit on TikTok. It became popular both in Japan and South East Asia.[7][1][8]

She release the song "Seventeen's Song" in May 2022.[9] In an interview with RealSound, she said that she wrote that song because of her conflict with music, she also said that she wanted to pursue medicine upon graduation because her parents always tell her to take it but decide to pursue music-related course upon the approval of her parents after she play the song "Seventeen's Song" to them.[10]

She sang the ending theme for the 2023 anime series Blue Orchestra.[11] She debuted with the music label Universal Music Japan on June 14, 2024, with the release of her first album Longing for Navy Blue.[12][13] She sang the first ending theme song of the 2024 anime series A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School!.[14]

Before turning 20 years old, she release another single entitled "Last Teenage Days" focusing on how she feel about the end of her teenage years.[15] She reveal her face to the public for the first time upon the announcement of her song "Medicine" and live tour in February 2025.[16][3] In February 2025, it is announced that songs by Yuika will have a manga adaptation by Nijisawa Hanami, the first issue will feature her song "Sukidakara", "The one" and "Sniper".[17]

Style

She often writes love songs with the theme of "unrequited love". In an interview with RealSound, she made make songs that it is different from her own taste, adding that she likes Yorushika and Sakaguchi Yumi expression of negative emotions while she often writes a more positive one and adding that she make sure that the songs she wrote have a "positive ending".[10]

She usually sing with her guitar. Aone Komachi from Billboard Japan describe her songs as "a mix of familiarity that is common to traditional J-POP, but it is not just nostalgic, but rather has more elements that make it feel new than nostalgic."[1]
