Yeast is a 2008 comedy film directed by Mary Bronstein starring Bronstein, Greta Gerwig, and Amy Judd.[2][3] The film has been characterized as typifying the mumblecore ethos.[4]

Plot

[edit]

Rachel is a young teacher living in Brooklyn with her roommate Alice. The pair plan to go camping with their friend Gen, but Alice drops out from the trip at the last minute. Over the course of the trip, Rachel becomes annoyed with Gen's immature attitude, but the friends strengthen their bond when fending off unpleasant behavior from a pair of men they meet in the woods. Back in Brooklyn, Alice and her boyfriend Tony make fun of Rachel, and Rachel and Alice have a confrontation regarding Alice's new job.[4]

Production

[edit]

Yeast was shot on a MiniDV camcorder by Sean Price Williams, who also appears in the film as Tony.[3] Sound was recorded by the director's then-husband, Ronald Bronstein, who also edited the film.[4]
