No redirect?

I suppose i should know this, but what's "no redirect"?DGG (talk) 21:44, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

If you arrive at a page in Wikipedia via a redirect, but you want to instead access the redirect page itself. For instance, WP:WPTB brings you to this page, but if you want to see the actual WP:WPTB redirect page, you can add "?redirect=no" to the end of the URL, and the redirect won't be followed; you'll see the actual redirect page, so you can look at its history or make changes. It's what happens when you click the small link at the top of a page you've been redirected to, where it says "redirected from [some page]". :) Equazcion /C 21:52, 24 Jan 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion: auto-hide

I don't remember exactly, but I think the last Wikipedia toolbar I used had the ability to hide itself when the user wasn't viewing a wiki site. Would you consider, Equazcion, enabling this toolbar to hide itself if the domain being viewed isn't at *.wikipedia.org? It would be immensely useful, at least to me. Tuvok[T@lk/Improve] 08:20, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Me too :) I'd like to implement that along with a whole bunch of other things. I just took my first stab at Firefox extensions about 24 hours ago though, so it may take some time for me to figure out the fancier stuff. I'd like to get a feature wishlist going, if you'd like to use that suggestion to get one started (subpage of the main page perhaps?). Equazcion /C 08:30, 25 Jan 2008 (UTC)
No rush; I didn't mean to sound pushy. If I did, I apologize. I've made a page for bug reports and suggestions at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Toolbar/Bugs and suggestions. I figure it's inevitable that the extension will have at least one bug in its lifetime... ;-) Tuvok[T@lk/Improve] 09:17, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Nah that's okay, you didn't sound pushy. I've implemented a temporary fix that should at least make this more usable for the time-being, described it at the features/bugs page you made. Thanks for that by the way :) Equazcion /C 10:05, 25 Jan 2008 (UTC)

Feature requests

  • I don't remember exactly, but I think the last Wikipedia toolbar I used had the ability to hide itself when the user wasn't viewing a wiki site. • For the time-being, I've added a button available to the standard Firefox nav bar via "Customize", which will show/hide the Wikipedia toolbar. I hope to figure out an auto-hide feature at some point, ideally one that can be enabled via an eventual preferences dialog. Equazcion /C 10:03, 25 Jan 2008 (UTC)
  • I'm having a problem with this. When I select "customize" and the optional toolbar items appear, the Wikipedia Toolbar selection shows a large amounts of icons on several rows. But when I drag and drop to the Firefox toolbar no icon or text displays, although the resulting blank spot does function as intended. Otherwise this is a marvelous toolbar, thanks for developing it. --Captain Infinity (talk) 22:55, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Odd, yeah perhaps it is an extension conflict. I wish I could be more helpful but I'm unfortunately a beginner with extensions development. If you find out what was causing this please do post again. Equazcion /C 23:38, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Equazcion's wishlist

  • Option to auto-hide when not at a Wikipedia page, as described above
  • Preferences dialog
  • Ajax watch/unwatch toggle button
  • Customizable choice of buttons and layout order
  • Middle clicks load new tabs  Done
  • Live updating of button labels -- was done, but requires URL listeners, which have been disabled for the time being due to conflicts with other extensions.

Address bar misbehaving - probable extension conflict

Resolved
 – (probably) Disabled URL listeners for now, which has fixed a bunch of bugs
  • Operating system: Windows XP Pro/Tablet SP2
  • Firefox version: 2.0.0.11
  • Toolbar version: 0.4.8

Congratulations, Equazcion! It's your first bug report! :D

I just installed the 0.4.8 update over 0.4.2 and now the address bar no longer updates when I change pages. I have a feeling that it's an extension conflict. I have a lot of add-ons, though, so it'll take some doing to figure out what the problem is.

Yes, that's a lot of information, hence the {{hidden}}. ;-) I don't have the time to debug right now, so I'm afraid the toolbar must take a temporary leave of absence. :-( I'll try to do some troubleshooting over the weekend (meaning Sunday, probably). Tuvok[T@lk/Improve] 03:54, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Just noted something really strange. If I switch tabs and then come back, fragment identifiers work, but changing pages just gets messed up again. I hate debugging and extension conflicts... Tuvok[T@lk/Improve] 03:58, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
When you say the address bar doesn't update, do you mean it goes blank, stays at a previous URL, or what exactly? And what is "fragment identifiers"? Equazcion /C 04:07, 26 Jan 2008 (UTC)
I mean it doesn't change URLs. If I enter a page address, the address bar stays at what I entered, even if the browser is adding http:// or www. or whatever automatically. It also doesn't change when I click links. Switching to another tab and then back makes it update, but it doesn't seem to change after clicking more links.
The fragment identifier is the part of the URL after #. For example, this section's fragment identifier, if you click it in the TOC, is #Address_bar_doesn't_update. Tuvok[T@lk/Improve] 08:17, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
I honestly don't even know how to go about figuring this out. You've got a LOT of extensions there so of course I agree this is probably a conflict issue. It still shouldn't be happening, but I'm pretty new at this so I can't say exactly what's going on. If you can pinpoint the extension that's causing the conflict though, I might be able to address it. Equazcion /C 11:14, 26 Jan 2008 (UTC)
I had a conflict like this between the McAfee SiteAdvisor add-on and an extension called Freenigma (encryption for webmail). I ditched Freenigma partially because of the conflict (partially because I just didn't use it much). Depending on which extension is causing the problem -- which I'll research in a day or two when I have more time -- I might just ditch the one that's causing trouble. That is, if it's one I don't use enough to justify the inconvenience of living with the conflict or (gasp!) disabling the Wikipedia Toolbar permanently until the bug is fixed. ;) Rest assured, I'll look into this issue as soon as I can, and will give you at least the name of the extension that appears to be causing the problem. Cheers, and thanks for doing so much excellent work on this toolbar! Tuvok[T@lk/Improve] 05:56, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Hovering over "navigate" item

When I hover the mouse over one of the "navigate" dropdown items ("main" or "interaction", the tooltip that displays is the tooltip that last displayed when I hovered over a different item. For instance, if I hover over "watch" I get the tooltip "Watch this page". If I then hover over navigate's main or interaction item, it still displays "Watch this page". Hope this isn't just me or else I'll start to get paranoid.  ;-) --Captain Infinity (talk) 23:49, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I think the government is tampering with your Firefox extensions :) I can't seem to reproduce this bug. If you care enough about this, you could trying disabling other extensions, even disabling all other extensions, and see if you still experience these issues. Equazcion /C 23:52, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
What do you see when you hover over "talk/article"? I get a little blank square. --Captain Infinity (talk) 23:56, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
That I get too, it's a bug I've neglected to address for quite some time. Everything else, though, is a government conspiracy. Equazcion /C 23:58, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

How do I install

My computer won't open *.xpi files, what program do I need? --George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp 18:09, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

If it won't install by double-clicking, drag the file into a Firefox browser window. That should initiate the install. Equazcion /C 18:13, 12 Mar 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Done now. George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp 21:23, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

New message alerts

Is there any way to make it flash or something when a new message is received? I would find that extremely useful if it was possible. George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp 16:41, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

That is possible, but it would require the toolbar to login to Wikipedia for you and constantly check for new messages. That'd mean storing passwords, etc, and might be a bit more bother than it's worth. I also haven't been actively developing this lately. Perhaps sometime in the future though. Equazcion /C 19:40, 21 Mar 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps the toolbar could do it if you're logged in already? Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 14:47, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Full screen

When I view Firefox in full screen the toolbar automaticaly hides itself, but the navigation toolbar doesn't. I prefer to view Firefox in full screen, so how can I get the Wikipedia toolbar to stay? The Vandal Warrior (talk) 18:14, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure if that's currently possible, to be honest. I think most add-on toolbars get hidden automatically in full-screen mode. It may require explicitly adding that functionality in the code somehow. I may look into that further. Equazcion /C 15:47, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
Right click the toolbar and check Toolbar properties > View in full screen mode...... Dendodge .. TalkHelp 20:09, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't have "toolbar properties" in my right-click menu... perhaps that's a feature of an extension you have installed? Equazcion /C 20:13, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

IE version?

I know this would probably take a while if it happens, but are there any plans at the moment to create a version for Internet Explorer? It looks cool but I don't normally use Firefox. -- Imperator3733 (talk) 15:43, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

I would create an IE version but I really have no idea how. Firefox is much easier to write add-ons for. I'm currently trying to get more people involved in development (see village pump), but right now I'm the only one, and I don't know how to do it. Hopefully it'll get made if there's enough interest. Equazcion /C 15:49, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for responding so quickly. I read that IE7 is designed for add-ons, but I don't know how to make those. Hopefully you can find some more people. -- Imperator3733 (talk) 15:55, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

It does not work. I tried this with Firefox 3 beta 5 and now with the recently released Firefox 3 RC1. It still says "the add-on was not installed because it failed to provide secure updates." Even after setting extensions.checkUpdateSecurity to false. Atlantics88 (talk) 08:22, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
I tried to install it on Firefox 3 and it says "Wikipedia toolbar could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 3.0". Any thoughts on how to fix this? (reply on my talk page as i won't check here again)- -[The Spooky One] | [t c r] 12:29, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Toolbar is too wide

When the window is at certain widths (e.g., the very common 800px and 1024px), some buttons are invisible. I would suggest adding the ability to change the width of the search box, and/or adding the ability to remove the "Wikipedia" text from the Wikipedia main page button. —Wins oddf| 17:59, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Almost minor problems

  • Operating system: GNU/Linux i686
  • Firefox version: 3.0rc2
  • Wikipedia Toolbar version: 0.5.1

License notice

  • Bug description: GNU GPL is called “GNU General Public License”, and it requires the licence to be specified and included inside the program, too. Also, each file of the program should contain the notice. That’s usually done inside of the .js files of an add-on, though .xul files also can contain it. --AVRS (talk) 19:37, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Contents

The XPI contains the chrome stuff both as a .jar and an uncompressed copy. --AVRS (talk) 19:37, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Icon

The logo.png file seems to be “PNG image data, 24 x 23, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced”, not APNG or something. Why is it 52 KB when it can be 1 KB? That’s not a case on the AMO page. --AVRS (talk) 19:37, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestions. I optimized the images and now the installation file is about 12KB, versus 155KB before. I removed mention of the license completely. As for the chrome being present as a .jar file and as uncompressed files, I'm aware of that, but I leave it that way due to an odd bug that occurs whenever I try to fix it. When I create the XPI without both being present, the skin structure doesn't seem to get picked up by the browser, and the logo images don't display at all. I've tried to figure out why that is, to no avail. Having both present doesn't seem to be harming anything, and doesn't add any significant size to the installation, so I've chosen to just leave it this way for now. I just solved the .jar problem. It'll be fixed in the next update. Equazcion /C 00:31, 5 Jul 2008 (UTC)

Editing features

Would it be possible to add editing features to the toolbar such as this one Wikipedia:Tools/Browser tools/Mozilla Firefox/Extension: Wikipedia toolbar Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 13:41, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

I would urge you to look at this previous Wikipedia toolbar. There were some great things in it that could be integrated into this toolbar. Why reinvent the wheel? --Dragon695 (talk) 02:35, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

I was aware of that old toolbar before I began development on this one. I chose to start my own because my intent was to do something specific -- aid in navigation, by eliminating the need to be at the top of a page in order to click nav links. That old toolbar might also be called "Wikipedia Toolbar", but mine is meant to do different things, and certainly wasn't intended to reinvent it. I didn't see the need to add features that are now redundant with the standard mediawiki edit bar, which as far as I can tell is generally what the old toolbar offered. Also if you'll see the message at the top of this page, I'm no longer actively developing this extension, and I'm not willing to put in the time it would take to combine features from the old bar, even if I did discover any there that I thought would be useful. If anyone else has the time, expertise, and inclination, they should feel free to contact me. Equazcion /C 03:30, 4 Jul 2008 (UTC)
