Comments:
The project officially started. If your a new member please post a comment regarding how you wish to contribute to this project or anything else you like to say here:
- Tutmosis - Founder. Started this project because a lot of Hip Hop articles are in poor shape.
- Dragoonmac - Member. Joining as old Hip-Hop articles tend to decline quickly, and new ones are often in need of copyediting. I think another good thing to do would be remove all obnoxious talk page shout outs.
- I agree but I dont think deleting comments goes with wikipedian policy. We should archive the pages. Tutmosis 01:22, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Thousandsons V.I.P Member - I probably know more about Hip Hop than 98% of the population, so please trust me thank you for inviting me in the first palce.indefinitely banned - TheJabberwock 23:11, 16 April 2006 (UTC)- Mastagags Senior Member -I have a good source of knowledge on many figures in hip-hop and will continue to do most of my editing on these topics. I will leave the basics and composition of 'hip hop' to others.
- Cubdub (aka "The East Coast hip hop fanatic") - Member. There are countless hip hop articles that can be expanded. Ever since I joined Wikipedia, I have already expanded several articles (most notably Illmatic, East Coast hip hop, G-Funk, The Chronic, The Infamous, and Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, among others) that at one point, consisted of a few mere lines. And there are still several articles that I plan on expanding in the foreseeable future.
- I probably won't be too active, but I'd like to volunteer to help out, especially with articles on artists who use the Spanish or French languages. --Rockero 21:56, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- FuriousFreddy: self-proclaimed expert on hip-hop music, R&B/soul music, and related topics. I also possess good (and hard-earned) writing skills. --FuriousFreddy 01:48, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- Urthogie - I'm a rapper in real life and a nerdy writer on this thing. I work on maintenance, categorization, and I hyperfocus on one article at a time(currently its Rapping, which is undergoing featured article nomination).--Urthogie 21:38, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Modulatum - I'm a producer and I have enough free time to review lots of back releases. MOD 23:34, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Jesusjonez - I have been a lifelong fan of rap and hip-hop. I plan to use my knowledge to contribute what I can to articles about rappers and hip-hop related things.
- Yanksta x - I've got a general vast knowledge of hip hop in general, will contribute to anything that needs it.
- ByeByeBaby - A sound is worth a thousand words, so I'm working on samples; adding, cataloging and cross-linking. My first goal is to add samples for all (or as many as I can) of the subgenres and styles, so people get an idea of what an entire group of artists sounds like. Second goal is to fill in the major artists that were skipped. My other goal is to cross-link all samples, to the artist, album, single, genre (if appropriate). The sample catalog is User:ByeByeBaby/Hip_Hop_Fair_Use_Sample_List, if people want to add, link, catalog or whatever.
- Graphic - I'll help however I can. I will probably be focusing mainly on improving Wu-Tang related articles.
- TheJabberwock - I'll mostly be doing cleanup and proofreading.
- Bill shannon - I will probably concentrate on some lesser known artists and specific artists that aren't represented on Wikipedia yet, but have had good careers. Although if I have anything to add on any other articles (additional facts, corrections, proofreading) I'll do that too.
- Jalabi99 - new Member. I intend to focus on the articles on African hip hop artists, especially from South Africa and Nigeria. Great to see Wikipedia repping the brothas and sistas from the Motherland.
- BTNH - I've noticed many of these hip-hop sites are becoming fan clubs for the artists. Nothing negative is ever mentioned, and their faults are often ignored. I will henceforth be known as 'Minister of Keepin it Real' for my contributions in showing the reality of hip-hop.
- PCP MC - I joined for the purpose of editing and expanding rap articles, and since then have made major edits and contributions (rewording, spellchecking, clarifying, or just plain writing) to articles like Easy Mo Bee, The Outlawz, Jay-Z, Royce da 5'9" and Soul Assassins. Still working on things when I see them.
- Carlos - I joined because I saw some things about Bay Area Hip hop culture that were somewhat, err, questionable? (Thizz)So I'd love to help with that however possible, (Check the user profile! YEEEE!!!)
To do List
Here is a list of things that I think needs to get done:
Get membersImprove main project page(Still undergoing improvement)Design template User hip hop wikiproject and Category:WikiProject Hip Hop membersDesign template to show an article is part of this project(Can be improved)design any other templates(A few left)- design barnstar
Create other pages for this wikiproject such as to-do list(Some others still under construction)- Go and tag all articles with proper templates
- Organize all articles into proper categories
- Assess and give a score to all articles
- Start Improving articles
To Do
so like were aiming to get all hip hop pages good or star — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bobo6balde66 (talk • contribs)
- Yes we are trying to get them cleaned up and featured. Tutmosis 23:41, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
something to do
You guys wanna help me build up Portal:Hip hop?--Urthogie 09:46, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Ideas
Why dont we like give each member of this prodject a Hip Hop artist?
- Its all up to the members, the project want try to force anyone into editing something. Also its better than 2 people edit an article than 1 since they can correct each others mistakes. Tutmosis 22:59, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Project name
I think this project should be called "Hip hop music" instead of "Hip Hop", so we don't run into problems if we want to start a more general project on all aspects of hip hop culture. Wintran 21:09, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- This project is on all aspects of hip hop culture. Except for music there arent too many topics to worry about. Tutmosis 22:57, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Ah, I see, that's good. I changed the introduction to make this more clear. Actually there are other topics that need work, such as breakdancing and all its related articles. I'm currently working on a new article for hip hop dance, for example, that will describe the many other dance styles associated with hip hop today (in addition to breakdancing). Wintran 00:13, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Oh great to hear, Ill try to help out any way I can. User:Tutmosis 01:15, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

bad punctuation
It's Hip hop not Hip Hop.--Urthogie 21:13, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, Ill change it now. Tutmosis 22:58, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Suggestions
Okay we got a couple members now, I think we should discuss what we plan to do. You are all welcome to edit the project pages so feel free to improve them. So what do you guys think we should do first? Tutmosis 23:13, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not very experienced with WikiProjects, but how about we create a list or a tree of existing hip hop articles, to see what we currently have? I'm guessing hip hop culture would be at the root of the tree, and maybe we don't need to list all hip hop artists and too specific articles (or these could be placed in separate lists). Maybe this list could also have a todo on each article, and include wanted articles that do not yet exist? Wintran 02:03, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
That makes sense. I like the idea. Maybe we can kind of generalize and have like 3 categories: Culture, Music, People. And under each like you mention have a to-do list. What you think? Tutmosis 02:08, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Let's try that and see how it works. Here's an attempt at defining the lists you proposed:
- Culture includes all the general articles related to hip hop culture, such as hip hop music, hip hop fashion, hip hop music, breakdancing, graffiti and so on.
- Music should only include music related hip hop articles, but not individual artists or groups.
- People and events include notable hip hop individuals and groups, such as musicians or hip hop bands, and hip hop events.
I'm also new to Wiki projects but I know a lot about Hip Hop, more than any of you anyways...Thousandsons
- Additional lists could be added as needed.
- Thats exactly to the dot what I had in mind. You like the idea cause I would definetely want to do that? Tutmosis 02:35, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- We should probably list some of the weaker articles in these various categories as well, in case anybody has extended knowledge on the subject. I have begun to edit and edd to the 'peoples' section of hip hop and will continue to do so if that will help.--Mastagags 05:18, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
For a comprehensive list of the central hip-hop related articles that need to become featured if we want hip hop to be well covered on Wikipedia, go to User:Urthogie/todo. I'd suggest adding some of these to a to do list for this project. By the way, you did the punctuation move wrong-- its hip hop when its not at the beginning of the sentance :) --Urthogie 08:10, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Oh man, again? which pages should be renamed? Tutmosis 22:29, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Also how do you guys want the to-do page to look like? Tutmosis 22:30, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- We should organize it like the {{opentasks}} template.--Urthogie 15:12, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- Okay I created it and made it look close to the opentasks page. Thanks for the link. Hope you guys like it. Tutmosis 23:29, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- Oh yea, i renamed the pages again, Urthogie tell me if you spot any incorrections i left out. Tutmosis 03:36, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, I think this article should be called Wikipedia:WikiProject Hip hop (like the last version). I see what Urthogie mean, but it seems like most other WikiProjects use a capital letter on the project name, after "WikiProject", which means it should be "WikiProject Hip hop" and not "WikiProject hip hop".
- Here's some information about WikiProjects, which might give us some ideas (I haven't read them yet): Wikipedia:WikiProject, Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices, Wikipedia:To-do list
- Thanks for the helpful links. Also Urthogie you read the above comment? Tutmosis 00:27, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- Okay i removed my previous comment since it was a little hot tempered. I appologize. What I was trying to say is, a template screwed up since my last project pages moves. Can we please decide on how we want the project name to be spelled? Are you guys fine with how it is now or you want Hip to be capitilized? Tutmosis 03:53, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry to hear that this has cause you trouble and extra work. The thing is that Urthogie is correct in that "hip hop" should never be capitalized, except in the beginning of a sentence like all other words. What I noticed is that all other WikiProject articles are named with a capital letter on the project name, like Wikipedia:WikiProject Music or Wikipedia:WikiProject Culture, even though "culture" and "music" is never capitalized otherwise. That means that the name of the WikiProject is an exception.
- If it's difficult to change back, let's just let it be at the moment and get the project rolling instead. We can always change it later. Wintran 12:53, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Because this isn't in the article namespace I guess it's up to us whether the H is capitalized. I don't care so much either way, as long as Hop isn't capitalized(because thats a common punctuation mistake).--Urthogie 08:23, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- So anyone wish to capitalize H? I dont mind changing it again. Tutmosis 00:31, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Freestyle Info
One thing I'd like to see is more info on well kowned freestyles or mixtapes, I made this page as an example 300 Bars and Runnin', Because 300 Bars for example their are tons who have been wonderin' what beats he usin' for that, I knew about all of them before listening to it but most people don't. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chubdub (talk • contribs)
- Thanks for the great work chub, I can see your knowledge will help us alot. Tutmosis 23:31, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- Also might I recommend adding this to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Hip hop/History page. Tutmosis 23:31, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Idea
How about we have a weekly/monthly featured article for our portal section--chub 01:09, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- What do you mean? the portal already has a Selected article section which is basically the same thing since very few hip hop articles are featured. We should have a voting page to decide on the next selected article.Tutmosis 01:14, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- Well what I meant to say (and was unable to specify, since I am too pre-occupied in my frantic search to list all of the hip-hop related stubs) is to have a featured artist of the month and featured album of the month, rather than one sole selected article section --chub 01:49, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- Oh thats not a bad idea, personally I would support this. We need to get more other opinion since like 4 people are dominating this talk page. Oh and by the way, I hope you know your work is greatly appreciated. Tutmosis 03:16, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
Templates
Can I get some feedback regarding the templates section especially Template:WikiProject hip hop and Template:User hip hop wikiproject. I think this templates can use some improvement. Do you guys like them? How can we improve them? --Tutmosis 04:24, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
another idea
How about hip hop collaborations of the week?
- Definetely! Tutmosis 14:47, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Created the page. Link is on the main page. Tutmosis 16:39, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
featured article nomination of rapping
There's currently a peer review of rapping at Wikipedia:Peer review/Rapping/archive3 if you guys want to participate.--Urthogie 21:36, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Illmatic - Featured article?
I nominated the Illmatic article for a feature a few days ago but it got shot down. But it's a great article, and it could definitely make it pretty soon. What do you all think? --HasNoClue 04:37, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
- I put Illmatic up for peer review. And I have adressed the major issue that kept it from being accepted as a FA (the absence of inline references). However I think we can do a little bit more to improve the article before we re-nominate it for FA-status.
- Lead doesn't entirely summarize the article, and therefore, it needs to be expanded. See WP:LEAD.
- Add sound samples from the albums
- The picture of Nas during his promotional video (Image:Nas making illmatic.jpg) was unsourced and therefore removed. If you could find its source (preferably a public domain) then we could still use it. The article could use some pictures indeed.
- I've changed the Trivia section into a different proese, since Trivia by definition is unenyclopediec. It is now "Cultural notes", but it seems to be a list of random information (i.e. the info about the album cover doesn't seem the be relevant to the topic). If we could somehow take some of those facts and include them into the article itself, I think we could avoid criticism.
- The "Music" section doesn't enter into much discussion of the songs on the album, so it could use some expansion
- Article may need a "recording session" section
And Illmatic is currently being nominated for hip hop collaboration of the week. So by all means vote for it. I look forward to helping you improve this article. Best of luck!!! --Chubdub 14:38, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
add hip hop section for requests
Now you can see requested hip hop articles at Wikipedia:Requested_articles/music#Hip_hop.--Urthogie 12:18, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Project Status
A few questions for the community regarding the project:
- I was playing around with designing the barnstar and its not really working out, do you guys have any ideas regarding how you want the barnstar to look?
- Can we get some input regarding what you guys think of the current project templates. What can we improve? Should we improve anything? Any templates still we need to make?
- Except for working on the to-do list articles and/or collaboration, anything you guys think the project should be concentrating on?
Thanks for your time. –Tutmøsis · (Msg Me) 15:37, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
- IMO the image on the Wikiproject template is rather generic. Can we get a more specific one? Like of a hand scratching a record? Or a breaker? Or maybe the face of a pioneer? And what do you guys think about implementing a ratings system like the one they're using at Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America? I could help out with that, if the participants like the idea. And how 'bout using the Wikipedia:To do template for the to do list? I can look into making a barnstar, too, though the ones I've made are just photoshop slap jobs.--Rockero 01:57, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- I was thinking of the rated list of article tables also although this would in a way replace most of the to-do list purpose. Since there are so many article we could split the rated tables into 3 separate pages.
- Hip Hop: All articles related to hip as well as all artists.
- Albums & Songs: self-explanatory.
- Miscellanious: Minor articles with limited importance.
- If other members agree with the idea, I support the idea and will help out build the pages. Also Rockero, I dont think its absolutely necessary to create a super unique new barnstar and photoshoping the standard would be fine. I agree about the template picture but my efforts of finding a better one is going nowhere. –Tutmøsis · (Msg Me) 02:37, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- The three tables should be fine, I think. What about Image:Breakdance oldschool.jpg for the template?--Rockero 03:13, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yea that picture definetely works. If there is no objection we can look into putting it into the templates. –Tutmøsis · (Msg Me) 03:20, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

idea
How about a hip hop welcome template, for new users who seem to be contributing to hip hop?--Urthogie 10:29, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- Sure, it will be quite easy to make, what the you think it should say in general? –Tutmøsis · (Msg Me) 21:45, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well, it would have a variable for the article they edited(which would be mentioned in the text: "Hey, I noticed you edited [article]..."), and their would be separate templates for anons and for users. Basically, it would tell them about the wikiproject hip hop and once we finish the portal, it would tell them about that.--Urthogie 12:05, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
- I like the artwork for that template (giving a shoutout to the contributor). Who did it? -- Jalabi99 22:49, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- Looks like Rockero (see above). TheJabberwʘck 01:42, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
samples crosslinking
I like what User:ByeByeBaby is doing at User:ByeByeBaby/Hip Hop Fair Use Sample List. We should create a samples subpage that lists all hip hop samples like that.--Urthogie 17:00, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry for the no response, but do you mean make a wikipedian page listing all hip hop samples? My suggestion would also be to make a category for all those files. – Tutmøsis (Talk) 23:31, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Are The Artricles Improving
are all the pages gettibg better, i dont think the pages are improving Bobo6balde66 21:09, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
What particular articles do you feel are lacking quality and need to be improved? --Chubdub 15:46, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- It takes time, I dont think members sit with 20 books writing articles all day. If they are, Im speechless. The project is also still undergoing expansion. – Tutmøsis (Talk) 02:17, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
Grade School
New page that can be accessed under the Navagation section on the main page.
- Is it a good idea or should we just forget this?
- Anything you want to change about how to grade articles? anything to add?
- The name, should it be renamed? to what?
Thanks for reading. – Tutmøsis (Talk) 18:45, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- I like this because it will give us a better idea of what needs to be done...it will serve as a complement for the tasks page. Maybe we should refrain from adding stubs, though, since there is already a category for them, it will make the table enormous, and it is pretty obvious what needs to be done to them? And maybe we should break it up into artists, albums, and miscellanea or along some other scheme? I'll start helping build the table since I offered to do so...--Rockero 19:09, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hmm thats very intresting, getting rid of stubs for that reason is a fantastic idea. Also regarding the scoring Template:Grading scheme just came out and I was thinking might as well use that. Unless your guys have even more unique ideas of what we can do with the scoring? – Tutmøsis (Talk) 23:36, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- Please check out User:Rockero/Grade school and see if we want to do something like this. It's just a start, and there are no categorical subdivisions, but I think it makes the purpose and process fairly clear...--Rockero 20:04, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- The page looks fantastic, if you want we might as well take that page and copy it onto the project grade school unless you still want to expand it on your own. Tusmosis 23:29, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

News: New user welcome template
Made this template for new users who just edited a hip hop article. Template:Hiphop WN. Its a cheat rip off of the Template:Welcome. – Tutmøsis (Talk) 18:50, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

something to add
We should add some sort of system to alert people when a hip hop article is up for peer review, or up for featured article nomination. Also, we should track our progress and list the featured articles we have. Just some ideas. Peace, --Urthogie 12:08, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- How about if we ask project participants to add {{HH Announcements}} to their watchlists?--Rockero 20:05, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- I cant really think of any system to alert people. Only possibility is a template, and/or just announcing it on people talk pages every time. Personally I think a template is easier, and {{HH Announcements}} is great way to see whats going on. – Tutmøsis (Talk) 23:26, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- Also regarding Rockero comment it would be great if members would add the template on their watchlist. – Tutmøsis (Talk) 23:27, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- I added sections for ongoing peer reviews and whatnot at the todo subpage.--Urthogie 06:31, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- I think we should also put more effort into chonicling individual songs. Maybe have a person watching the billboard hip-hop/rap charts every week and putting up a page (open to peer review) about all the hit songs as they come?

Spelling Error
In the Selection of genres we have 'regga' instead of reggae. Maybe you guys know something I don't but I think this should be changed.

- Rapping eh? do I smell another collaboration? – Tutmøsis (Talk) 21:34, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

crossing out on todolist
I'm thinkin we should just remove stuff. There are a ton of requests, so its gonna get cluttered if we keep striking.--Urthogie 12:36, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- Agree, should we just remove them or put them somewhere else for reference? - Tutmosis 22:36, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe the page history could accomplish that.--Urthogie 10:45, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
Awards?
I think we should start handing out awards to notable members. Granted, the project is still in its infancy, but I have noticed that a few individual members have contributed immensely to the project over the past few weeks. In my opinion, they deserve some praise for their work. Chubdub 00:32, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe, but we don't want to dilute the significance of the awards. I'd say wait a few months, until the project reaches a relatively stable phase (right now it's in an expansion, correct?), and then take a retrospective look at who's been working the hardest. TheJabberwʘck 01:20, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. If you do give some awards out now, I don't want one yet, thanks. You'll probably get one for Illmatic. TheJabberwʘck 01:23, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- Should we have a barnstar for an award or should we design our own special award? - Tutmosis 02:18, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- I like the barnstar above, though it obviously needs some work. Barnstars seem to be the standard WikiProject award (see here). TheJabberwʘck 02:39, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
Future collaboration.......
Hopefully once we will get Illmatic and then rapping (knock on wood) we should start considering our new collective effort for FA-status. I am considering East Coast hip hop or The Wu Tang Clan at this point (both of which lack any references) Chubdub 00:19, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
After the rapping article Im thinking about the Tupac Shakur article which is very close to a FA, maybe Nas? Jaranda wat's sup 00:36, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Yeah. You're right. The Tupac Shakur article seems to be well-sourced and comprehensive more so than the other articles I mentioned. I'd certainly nominate that as a our next collaboration after rapping. Though the notes and references style needs to be converted. Chubdub 02:42, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
hope this is helpful

- Added these to Wikipedia:WikiProject hip hop/Grade school. TheJabberwʘck 16:53, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
wikiproject is doing a great job
Thanks for the great showing on that AFD. This wikiproject is really making the editing of hip hop articles a lot less stressful.--Urthogie 08:44, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
need help with category sorting
Hey, I could really use some help on Category:Hip hop musicians. The goal is for nothing to be directly in that category. Here's how you sort:
- Add nationality. If they're a german rapper, for example, you'd put them in Category:German rappers. If they're a Polish hip hop group, you'd put them in Category:Polish hip hop groups. (Note: Jewish is a nationality)
- For DJ's and producers, put those categories on: category:Hip hop producers and Category:Hip hop DJs.
- Certain styles have their own category. Nerd rappers go in Category:Nerdcore hip hop musicians, for example. Christian rappers, who talk about Jesus all the time, would go in Category:Christian rappers.
- Beatboxers go in Category:Beatboxers.
- Certain things shouldn't even be in a hip hop category. For them, check out Category:Rap metal musicians, Category:Trip hop groups, etc.
- Slam poets like Gil Scott Heron go in Category:Slam poets.
- Hip hop singers like Trina, Nate Dogg, and Akon go in Category:Hip hop singers.
- Make sure not to overlap categories. E.g. don't put Category:rappers and Category:American rappers on the same article.
That's it. It's much easier than it sounds. I'd really appreciate any help, as there's a lot of them. Peace, --Urthogie 09:48, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Okay I removed most people from Category:Hip hop musicians, because they were already in more specific categories such as Category:American rappers. I also added people I noticed that were not in any specific category. A closer look at each rapper now would be good to place in all proper minor categories. - Tutmosis 23:37, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think GSH is so much a slam poet as he is a proto-rapper, along the lines of the Last Poets or the Watts Prophets. Maybe we need a new category??--Rockero 00:12, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- I think proto rapper is subjective. From a purely factual viewpoint he was a slam poet that kind of set the template for rappers. But we can't have a subjective category I think. Anyways, who wants to help sort?--Urthogie 07:07, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
