Boundary

[edit]

What will be the boundary of NOVA? Will it includes Prince William County?--Chuck369 (talk) 01:22, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would think that it would include PW. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 01:29, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It would be included, as the standing definition of NOVA is the part of Virginia that's in the D.C Metro area. Anyway, I am going to put up a definition (for our purposes) on the Task Force Page.226Trident (talk) 01:35, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Deletion

[edit]

I propose that we keep our operations centralized and delete the separate to-do list, having it all here at this page. By the way, Is the bot correctly picking up the taskforce? I don't think so. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 03:20, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done Subpage Deleted. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 01:25, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Page tag

[edit]

I added a tag to the Virginia template, so people can now tag articles as being a part of the task force. Add |northern virginia=yes to mark an article as being a part of this task force. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:50, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Assessment Bot help

[edit]

WPMILHIST somehow has the editorial team bot make a task force article assesment table for each task force. Does anyone know how to implement the bot at the Task Force level?226Trident (talk) 00:52, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would not worry about trying to separate this from the main WikiProject. The advantages of having this as a subset of the Virginia WikiProject are so that we can centralize the process of assessments and peer reviews. As a Task force, we should be concerned with identifying Northern Virginia Related articles for cleanup, and as an assembled group, helping to improve those articles. Subdividing any more will just bring people away from the whole WikiProject and increase confusion. I am AGAINST moving toward a separate WikiProject with separate article lists and increasing bureaucracy, and FOR actually working on articles about Northern Virginia. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 01:23, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I also want to keep this as a TF. All I want to make is the same table created by the bot to tell us what articles related to nova need cleanup and what class they are. The WikiProject Virginia project page has one, and I know by looking at WPMILHIST, that it is possible to have the same statistics table except just for NoVa related articles. So basically, I just want the table so the NoVa Task Force know what virginia articles need to become higher quality or be cleaned up.226Trident (talk) 02:20, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about my little rant:), however, I think that there are few enough members of WP:VIRGINA that we need to have all of the members we can working on all of the WikiProject. Finally, I would assume that at least one in three of the articles in WP:Virginia's categories are Northern Virginia related, and therefore it will not be hard to pick them from the masses, and if they are in particularly dire need, they can be listed at the task force's page. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 02:38, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AfD for South Lakes High School

[edit]

Every high school and secondary school in Fairfax county has an article, and so do all the International Baccalaureate high schools in Virginia. So I have to ask - why was this task force's first act to propose South Lakes High School for deletion? RossPatterson (talk) 02:45, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just because a member of this project, User:226Trident proposed the article for deletion does not mean that this project backed him/her. I, For one, believe that the editors in the deletion proposal had every reason to keep the article. I think that this was a decision by 226Trident, and as you can see above, I have not always agreed with him/her. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 03:13, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
An unwise move by 266Trident, and I believe that the consensus within the project has dissented from his opinion. --BLM Platinum (talk) 02:41, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Politics

[edit]

I think that it is only appropriate that politicians from the Northern Virginia area should be within the jurisdiction of this task force. If the main Virginia WikiProject sees Virginia politicians in general as being within the scope of their project; It is only reasonable that articles about pols specifically from Northern Virginia be supported by us (as well as WP Virginia). -BLM Platinum (talk) 02:39, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I agree that we should limit our focus. How about we include the following:
  • Geographical Locations
  • Politicians
  • Schools
  • Governments
  • Transit
  • Parks & Recreational Facilities
  • Major, Notable events
And Not:
  • Biographies about anyone who is not a politician who lives/grew up in Northern Virginia
  • Companies Headquartered in Northern Virginia
I put this on the main task force page. I will begin to move the items on the second list, but it will take time. Thoughts? --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 21:40, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with that list almost completely, but I am not in complete agreement with the last point; I think that if the company is operational ONLY in Northern Virginia it can be included within the task force. Landmarks such as the Pentagon and the CIA headquarters should also be within our jurisdiction. --BLM Platinum (talk) 22:08, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I added the landmarks to the main page. I finished removing the companies and biographies, but most of the companies were HQd in many different places or were moving. I still think that the number of companies is just too large to include them, but if a few, particularly important companies should be included then that is fine. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 22:32, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes, though, companies that have moved have a lot of history in the area. Colgan Air was started by a local politician and was a major employer in Manassas. I guess how important a company is to the project on the project's scale should depend on its history in the area. WhisperToMe (talk) 00:29, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Do you think a Navbox, like the one below, would be helpful or overkill? It could be expanded to include some of the items listed in Politics such as locations, transit, etc.

--Chuck369 (talk) 02:08, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

All of the main articles about the specific jurisdictions already have a statewide Navbox, and I don't think other NOVA articles really need that box. Transit in the DC area already has its own box too. Sorry! Nice Idea though. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 02:23, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be very helpful if there was a navbox for politics. It would enable me to add way more content to all of the articles for small time politicians which I make. -BLM Platinum (talk) 02:29, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What would you want a politics Navbox to include? --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 02:37, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Northern Virginia Legislative Bodies" or something. It's not my job to make it! I was just saying that if he had an idea then he should go ahead and create it. -BLM Platinum (talk) 00:13, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How about this? Overkill?

226Trident (talk) 22:53, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That looks good; Could I have a published version so I can test it out in my sandbox? -BLM Platinum (talk) 23:38, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to look at it more, here is the link to the beta, User: 226Trident/Creations/Template:nova-politics-navboxor if you want to paste the Template right into your sandbox,{{User:226Trident/Creations/Template:nova-politics-navbox}} I won't make a final version until we have consensus as a group. Anyone have objections to this design?226Trident (talk) 00:03, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I do have two suggestion though; you should make the categories in the template gender neutral; (i.e. "Members of Congress representing Northern Virginia" instead of "U.S. Congressman representing Northern Virginia"); and, could you change "members of the Virginia House of Delegates" to "Members of the Virginia General Assembly" so that state senators can be included in that category along with delegates? -BLM Platinum (talk) 00:14, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is the final template, Template: Navbox nova-politics, Are we missing any politicos? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 226Trident (talkcontribs) 01:54, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you should include Sharon Bulova. I also think that the "Notable politicians who once represented NOVA" is a bit ambiguous. Maybe you should think about just putting the two current senators, as well as the governor, LT governor, and Atty. general for the state in the bottom box, because with the current title a lot of varied politicians could be added. Also, make sure that it is autocolllapsed before using. Looks Good! --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 02:18, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I assume you would include the city and town mayors, and county board chairs. What about the rest of the council and board members? Do you want to split local into city, town, and county? Prince William Chairman At-Large: Corey A. Stewart, Occoquan Mayor: Earnest W. Porta, Jr., Dumfries Mayor: Fred E. Yohey, Jr., Quantico Mayor: Iris Tharp, Haymarket Mayor: Pamela Stutz, Manassas Mayor: Harry J. (Hal) Parrish II, Manassas Park Mayor: Frank Jones. Not that any of them have a Wikipedia article. :-/ --Chuck369 (talk) 06:39, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I added Sharon Bulova, fixed the internal link to Tom Rust, added Mark Keam, Robert Marshall (both delegates from Loudon and Fairfax). Nice job on this. I added the template to Jim Moran and Frank Wolf; so if anybody wants to see it in action, then you can see it their. I'll add it to more pages later. I still have a few suggestions, and I didn't want to add them without discussing it first.
  1. I want to put a letter next to each politician indicating his or her party. So if I were to do this to, say, Frank Wolf, I would put "Frank Wolf (R)" or "Frank Wolf (R) depending what you like best (I like the second one better); instead of Frank Wolf
  2. I like the suggestion that somebody posted up there that we include mayors; either as a new category, or under "local government leaders"; and create pages for any of them which are not on Wikipedia yet (depending on whether they count as notable or not, which they probably will).
  3. For the members of congress, we could also put their district next to their names, like instead of Gerry Connolly, we could do Gerry Connolly (D-11th district), or (D-11th). -BLM Platinum (talk) 17:47, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Before this template is used any more we MUST change its location to Template:Northern Virginia Politicians so that the template will display correctly. I will do this soon if Nobody thinks that there is a problem. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 21:24, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have one more question regarding this template; should we include Congressman Rob Wittman? His district stretches into Prince William County, but the majority of it lies within Hampton Roads. Technically he does represent Northern Virginia, but not very much of it. The same thing should be asked of Robert Goodlatte, whose district sort of creeps up the western side of Northern Virginia. I've gone ahead and added Wittman, but not Goodlatte. I'll remove him if there are any substantive objections. -BLM Platinum (talk) 23:09, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This navbox would benefit from some trimming on the category names. How about removing all the "[who once] represent{ed|ing} Northern Virginia" stuff and retitling the box "Politicians representing Northern Virginia"? And linking "Northern Virginia" to Northern Virginia in the title would be a help too, for those who aren't from around here (or even on this side of the oceans). RossPatterson (talk) 02:11, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have trimmed the Navbox down per RossPatterson's suggestion. A revised version can be found in my sandbox. I have made the lines shorter by adding breaks, and I have also removed the "former" category that could grow to enormous proportions, and have added two links at the top. I welcome comments. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 02:59, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can see how the former politicians box could become troublesome after a while; but I don't see the need of having the the executive branch on there either. -BLM Platinum (talk) 03:35, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So do you want me to move my Version 1 to the template namespace? --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 21:20, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. -BLM Platinum (talk) 21:56, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
 Done --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 22:06, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I just saw something. Do you want to separate the list entries with a bold middot, such as {{·}}? --Chuck369 (talk) 01:07, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GAR notification

[edit]

Letting you know that an article under this project's scope, Westfield High School (Fairfax County, Virginia), is undergoing an individual good article reassessment. Reassessment comments are at Talk:Westfield High School (Fairfax County, Virginia)/GA1. Thanks, Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 22:50, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I want to put some effort into creating articles about the members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. I have also finished two Navboxes, which can be found in my Sandbox. I want some feedback before I dive into this project. -BLM Platinum (talk) 04:41, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In general appearance, I like version 1 better. However, if you decide to add the district for each member, the extra room in version 2 may work better. I also like the number of R's and D's in the bottom of version 1 version 2. I also prefer middots {{·}} between entries. --Chuck369 (talk) 05:18, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I added the middots, and it looks good. Version 2 just really wouldn't be practical, as it is meant for lists of entire (real) legislative bodies. I'll go ahead and roll out version 1. -BLM Platinum (talk) 05:53, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed a few fine points in the template, and also rescued Pat Herrity from a redirect to Fairfax County. Looks Good. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 18:36, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New category

[edit]

I created Category:People from Reston, Virginia, so if anybody knows any former or current residents that are not already included; then go ahead and add them. –BLM Platinum (talk) 16:12, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lloyd Woodson on AfD

[edit]

Lloyd R. Woodson, an article which is within our project's scope, is currently under AfD. The discussion is getting pretty intense, and I think that opinion from our members would be of value to them. The AfD report can be found here. –BLM Platinum (talk)

Huntley Meadows photo?

[edit]

The Huntley Meadows Park article has two photos. Is there a need for another? Please explain why this one is on the Photo requests list. --Zeamays (talk) 02:38, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removed. This task force is rather inactive. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 02:06, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DC project scope

[edit]

Hi! I started a discussion about the DC WikiProject scope at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_District_of_Columbia#Expand_scope.3F. I would like to extend the project's scope to the whole metro area. WhisperToMe (talk) 03:34, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Decommissioning the taskforce?

[edit]

Greetings. I am trying to clean up and streamline the WikiProject Virginia pages. In order to do so will require the clarification of whether this task force is or is not to be considered active. If it is active, then it should be reactivated (namely, removing the "inactive" tags). Otherwise, this page can be archived and links to it removed from the various pages.Morgan Riley (talk) 20:56, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
