Trying to figure out the NY 298/598 mess

[edit]
SH 348
  • approved 1903 "From the north line of the Village of Eastwood northerly along Midler Avenue; thence northeasterly under the freight tracks of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad through Whiskey Island; thence easterly along the Collamer Road to Barton's Corners, a distance of 1.896 miles, in the Town of Dewitt and known as the Collamer Road"
  • Eastwood village line crossed Midler Avenue halfway between James Street and Tyson Place
  • SH 348 was Midler Avenue, Old Court Street, and apparently Baptist Way, ending at Old Collamer Road (based on mileage given for both 348 and 672, Baptist Way had to have been 348)
  • contract July 9, 1909 (1.90 mi)
  • Syracuse annexed Eastwood in 1926, and presumably also the area just to the north, deleting the portion on Midler Avenue south of Old New Court Avenue
SH 672 and 672-A
  • approved 1906 "Running along Court Street from the city line of Syracuse easterly to Collamer Road No. 348, also running from the northerly end of said Road No. 348 northeasterly through the Village of Collamer and Schepp's Corners to the line between the Towns of Manlius and Cicero, a distance of 7.59 miles in the Towns of Salina, Dewitt and Manlius, Onondaga County, N. Y., and known as the Syracuse-Bridgeport Road
  • contract June 7, 1912 (7.58 mi)
  • 1913 report: grade crossing elimination in Salina and Dewitt "ordered, but construction not started"
  • 1914 report: has been split into contracts 672 (7.20 mi) and 672-A (1.14 mi): "0.38 mile at grade crossing cancelled, of which 0.20 mile was included in No. 672-A"; the entire 0.38 mi was taken out of Dewitt, and the entire 1.14 mi was in Dewitt
  • 1922 report: 672-A is still not under contract
  • SH 672 began at 7th North Street (within Syracuse city limits by 1922) and followed Court Street and New Court Avenue to the Salina/Dewitt town line. The original plan continued along New Court Avenue, cutting northeast from the curve across the railroad to the curve in Old Court Street. It appears that this is the 0.38 mi, with the 0.20 mi kept in SH 672-A being along New Court Avenue. The piece of Old Court Street east of the curve was built as SH 672, ending at Midler Avenue (SH 348). After a gap, SH 672 restarted at the end of SH 348 at Baptist Way, and followed Old Collamer Road and modern NY 298 to the Manlius-Cicero town line.
  • SH 672-A seems to have included the following: New Court Avenue in Dewitt, including the 0.38 mi that had been planned as SH 672 and a new extension southeast to Midler Avenue (SH 348); modern NY 298 and Old Court Street from New Court Avenue northeast and southeast to the curve where SH 672 was planned to come in (note that the west end of this is in Salina, going against the state reports, which show it all in Dewitt)
  • NY 931M was presumably added way later, since it's not on the 1980s quad map.

The 1940s county map agrees with what was state maintained, showing a reference route looping south of NY 298 via New Court Avenue and Midler Avenue.

SH 56-3
  • 1954 law: "from a point on SH 672-a at or near Town Line Road, northeasterly and easterly to a point on SH 348 in the vicinity of Bartons Corners, including necessary connections to local highways" - in other words, modern NY 298 from Old Court Street to Carrier Circle
  • related abandonments once complete:
    • "that portion of SH 672-a from its intersection with Town Line Road southeasterly to its junction with SH 672" - Old Court Street northwest of the curve
    • "SH 672 from same last mentioned junction point easterly to its intersection with SH 348" - Old Court Street east of the curve
    • "SH 348 from its intersection with SH 672-a northeasterly to a point at or near the highway to be constructed as described in the fore part of this paragraph" - Midler Avenue from New Court Avenue northeast to Carrier Circle

Everything seems to fit. The only issue is that the 1968 recodification and subsequent amendments never included New Court Avenue (now NY 598). --NE2 17:21, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
