Commecial Broadcast Article

Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Which is preferred?
In the event that a set of callsigns are assigned to both an FM and AM station, which article title style is preferred -- WXXX-FM or WXXX (FM)? I'm working on Michigan radio stations, and have found that there is no consistency at all, and am curious if there is a consensus as to which is preferred so I may proceed. Thanks! First of all, if you look up the FCC query for WKFR-FM in Kalamazoo, Michigan -- it reads WKFR-FM not WKFR... It is only fair that you use the official call letters with the suffix!!! Possible article for inclusion on its talkpage for your banner (Mark Simone)
Hello, I am a member of several other projects and recently came across Mark Simone's article because of changes made to another article I watch that his links to. Normally I would follow Wikipedia:Be bold in updating pages and be bold in adding your banner to this radio announcer/DJ but wanted your okay first. I do not belong to your project (meaning I don't watch your page (as I have over 620 pages I currently watch) but will see your change if you approve on his talkpage. - Maybe I should join your project too. I remember some of the golden old radio days listening to Roy Rogers, Gene Autry along with personalities like Steve Allen, Vin Scully, Don Drysdale etal. Those just some old radio names from the gone by L.A. days. Please consider those personalities too who don't have your project tag.

Add California radio stations
After I run an errand, I will begin to add California radio stations like KFI to our project. I have rated articles before for another project I am part of. My normal standard is that I will not rate above a B class, Low importance to avoid overinflating the ratings. I have reviewed the guidelines for rating. In some cases upon looking at an article, I agree with its present rating; in others I disagree but do not reassess unless I feel I am on certain ground. On an article that is no longer a Stub article, that is an easy upgrade to Start. I will review each article prior to putting the project tag on it and placing an assessment. - I noticed that after I made the edit and waited for a reply before adding more stations. I will review and remove it if it is still there. Hawaii Calls radio program
I wanted to let this WikiProject know about a new article I created on the Hawaii Calls radio program which ran from 1935 through 1975 and supposedly was one of the most listened to radio shows in the world at some point in time. February 11, 2007 additions to this project - gold mine in Monitor (NBC Radio)
I was going through Monitor (NBC Radio) and found a number of radio personalities who are not in this project. I should be done adding most of the names by later today. I wish I had thought to indicate which articles included a picture of the person speaking into a radio mike. It is kind of neat to see some of the old time photos of announcers/singers/etc addressing a radio mike. Might be nice to make a gallery of those pics. Ronbo76 22:36, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

- Depending on where the photos are stored, they could be moved to a gallery on Wikimedia Commons. It is just a matter of setting up a category there and then creating/moving/adding photos (either as links or the picture itself). I have an account there but not too sure on all the mechanics. Here is a great example of an article already in our project. I just read Clifton Fadiman who has a pic at the mike. Fadiman's picture is stored here on Wikimedia. The best place is to copy this picture to Wiki Commons. Surely (Don't call me Shirley), someone smarter than me knows how to do this. If the photos are already on Wiki Commons, it is just a matter of adding the category to the picture and then it links to our gallery.

I wonder how many articles in the Category:American radio personalities have our tag
Just got to thinking that as I stroked along adding radio personalities. I should check for the radio. Looking at Bob Hope, who I just added to our project, he has this category. In reviewing a batch of articles for Wikipedia:WikiProject Abandoned Articles, I came across the above article which needs improvement. I noticed it is in Category:Radio frequency propagation and that you have put this cat into your project, so I bring the matter to your attention. I'll do what I can but it is subject I know little of. Clear Channel Question
There are some of Clear Channel radio stations that are now under "BT Triple Crown Merger Co." (a private company that is pretty much still Clear Channel), should I put the merger company name in small italics under Clear Channel or just put Clear Channel and leave it at that? Eddie Cantor as an addition to this project
Eddie Cantor had a substantial radio career. But, to some, he is controversial for his blackface appearances. Still, since he has article here on Wikipedia, and since Wikipedia is not censored, I would like consensus before adding him to this project. Ronbo76

General problem with sourcing of talk show articles
I've been noticing that many articles about tlak shows, even long ones, have few or no sources. For example: List of Ron and Fez Show characters, Ron and Fez, John and Ken, etc. While these shows occasionally make the news, they otherwise receive little 3rd party coverage. Arlington Time Signal
I was surprised to find that there was no article about the Arlington Time Signal. It may not be a very broad topic, but it is one of the earliest wide-reaching and well-known radio services. Is there enough information to create an entry?--Drvanthorp 05:57, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Proposal: UK radio and radio stations task force
I originally started a debate at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Radio Stations#Proposal: UK Radio stations task force regarding starting a task force for UK radio stations. I have since changed the idea and instead of basing the proposal at Wikiproject Radio Stations, I wish to expand it into covering the radio industry of the UK as well as radio stations, which operates differently to the American model and base it as part of WikiProject Radio instead. Radio Article Names
In looking over the names of radio series that have been disambiguated, the choice of tag varies widely, depending on the contributor. I've seen (Radio), (Radio series), (Radio show), and (Radio program). IMHO, we need to standardize this. I propose just using the (Radio) tag. If there is more than one radio show by that name, maybe the year of the first air date can be used to differentiate. Ex: (1945 Radio) (1953 Radio). Anyone have any objections to standardizing radio show names this way? By the way, I think the (Radio) tag should be used for radio personalities as well. --PhantomS 00:01, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
Appeal for help from interested parties
On my watchlist I have over 1100 pages to which I have contributed--from a single comma to full articles. During the past two years I have uploaded hundreds of popular culture images, making daily uploads at times. Some of these pictures are the result of hours of searching in order to find the perfect and relevant image.
Over 700 of these images have been designated as needing fair use rationale and will vanish from Wikipedia in a few days simply because there's no way I can add rationales to that many pages in a week's time. What is needed is a team of people dedicated to saving this material from banishment by adding fair use rationales. Please help if you can. Thanks. US radio templates

Important warning: fair use rationales for radio logos
Be warned that fair use rationales with have got be full, complete and watertight. I have had a contribution speedily deleted under CSD#I6 under WP:NFCC#10c, even though it had this rationale, which I thought would cover it. I have also had an official warning for the text below on the aforementioned contribution:
- It is a logo of a pay television service which cannot be described in prose;
- There is no free alternative available;
- The logos inclusion to the article is paramount as it was the subject of a major advertising campaign;
- It is a low resolution image of the logo;
- It is a historically significant episode and logo of British Sky Broadcasting.
I have not come across a radio logo image which has as much as this, and it is likely that all of these are likely for deletion. If you have updated anything, make sure it is watertight and complete, and add as much information as you can. Question [about public radio]
I thought I'd pop by here and ask this, 'cause I expect it's the best place for it. Is there (I couldn't find it) a WikiProject for Public Radio? I'm just sort of castin' out a line to see if I can snag anyone that would be interested in it. Perhaps a task force . . . something along those lines? [year] in radio articles
While looking at the problematic KTLK-FM article, I noticed that it is using internal Wikipedia article links to things like 2006_in_radio, creating an implication that the other article is source for the factual statement being presented. However, the article pointed to has *no* sources at all (except for the deaths section), and therefore is not a reliable source. You can't create a reliable source by pointing to another wikipedia article that has no source. The lack of sources implies that this is either original research or material being taken from another published source (possibly a copyright issue).
This needs to be stopped in its tracks before it becomes pervasive in the radio articles. Each item in the Year in Review article should have an inline source that meets Wikipedia's verifiable reliable source standard, and the the radio station articles should directly cite the actual source, not the other wikipedia article. (see the 2006 article on Deaths for the correct way to do this). Wikipedia is not a radio "fan site".
Also, Wikipedia is intended for a global audience. It appears that all of the entries in these pages are events in radio in the United States, which is not appropriate. The article should be Year in Radio in the United States, or a more concerted effort to recruit information about radio in all countries. Whether a global article of all events in radio in all countries will be useful is something that should be discussed - frankly, these pages look appropriate to an almanac, not an encyclopedia.StreamingRadioGuide 00:03, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
Programming Commissioning
I think (though I might be wrong) that I've found a significant gap in Wikipedia's coverage of media organizations. I'm just sampling opinion at relevant WikiProjects to see if someone more informed has any ideas. The process of commissioning content for television and radio networks is an important one, with commissioning editors being notable media figures. The process affects the people who write and produce media content, as well as the commercial fortunes of the networks. Balances have to be made between artistic and commercial considerations, audience demographics (e.g. commissioning shows designed to attract younger or more affluent viewers), and in some circumstances, public service commitments. Should there be an article on this subject that explains details like how a show gets commissioned (who has to persuade whom? Are formats prepared to a brief specified by the network? What sort of test-screening or pilot schemes can be used to test a show's viability?), what the role of a commissioning editor is (I'm guessing they aren't in charge of scheduling a show... in multi-channel companies, can they even decide which channel it should be broadcast on? Is the tendency for different channels to have separate commissioning editors? Are commissioning editors' roles generally field-specific e.g. "Controller of Drama Commissioning", "Commissioning Editor for Factual Entertainment"? Presumably they have to work within the budget allocated to their area by their network, but do they have leeway to negotiate prices when trying to secure content or does that have to be authorized from higher up the company? Who becomes a commissioning editor anyway, and what is it the stepping stone to?), and what are the differences in the process between organizations with their own production facilities and those that rely on external independent producers - I presume the pitching process works differently? How do networks decide on when to re-commission a series? (In the middle of its run or at its end? Is it tied in to the advertising cycle that exists in some countries? In a first season of a show, are only the first few episodes commissioned in case it bombs, with an expectation that the rest of the season will be commissioned if they fare well?) Are there any particularly notable re-commissioning decisions? (I know that the re-commissioning of the original Star Trek for its final season, after an initial cancellation, only came after a major fan campaign - I'm sure such fan campaigns aren't unusual, but how is such a success rare?) As a general rule, how long after an original show is commissioned is that show actually ready to air? These are all questions I don't know the answers to, but I think Wikipedia should address them somewhere. Should there be an article at programming commissioning, commissioning editor or commissioning director that covers this sort of thing? So that replies gather in a central place, it's probably a good idea to post any thoughts at Talk:Commission where I wrote at first. I hope my query makes sense! Radio logo
Lots of radio station logs lack fair use rationales. They have therefore been tagged for deletion. They are included in this list User:East718/DFUI/Logos, usually under the station call letters. WikiProject Radio: Articles of unclear notability

Ripple Windmill, Ringwould
I've added Ripple Windmill, Ringwould to the radio project as it was used for some years as a TV relay station. I expect it would have relayed radio waves too. If this is incorect, please remove. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme
As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.
- The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
- The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
- A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.
Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.
Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. What does Airdate mean
Hello, I would like to find out what the consensus is about airdate when used in the Infobox:RadioStation. Does this mean the date the station signed on as a fully licensed broadcaster? That's what I believe it would mean. A page I created Greek Radio (Australia) has been unintentionally vandalised, because an unregistered contributor has changed the airdate of the station. They have changed it to the date that this particular group began as a program on another station (according to my research of their website), rather than the date the station actually became a station in its own right with their own transmitter and frequency. WikiProject Media franchises
Dear WikiProject Radio participants...WikiProject Media franchises needs some help from other projects which are similar. Media franchises scope deals primarily with the coordination of articles within the hundreds if not thousands of media franchises which exist. Sometimes a franchise might just need color coordination of the various templates used; it could mean creating an article for the franchise as a jump off point for the children of it; or the creation of a new templating system for media franchise articles. The project primarily focuses on those media franchises which are multimedia as not to step on the toes of this one. It would be great if some of this project's participants would come over and help us get back on solid footing. Please come and take a look at the project and see if you wish to lend a hand. Discussion on naming - Crystal Palace transmitter or Crystal Palace transmitting station
A discussion has opened on the more appropriate naming of articles in Category:Transmitter sites in the United Kingdom. The discussion has been moved to Category talk:Transmitter sites in the United Kingdom. The essence of the discussion, is that:
- a) the term Crystal Palace transmitter or Foo transmitter is used more commonly than Crystal Palace transmitting station or Foo transmitting station and so fits with the advice of Wikipedia:Name#Use_the_most_easily_recognized_name.
- b) the term Crystal Palace transmitting station or Foo transmitting station is more technically accurate as the term Transmitter has a specific use which does not and should not be applied to the station as a whole. As this is a technical term, the naming policy does not apply.
The relevant wording of the advice from the Wikipedia:Naming conventions is:
Generally, article naming should prefer what the greatest number of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature.
This is justified by the following principle:
- The names of Wikipedia articles should be optimized for readers over editors, and for a general audience over specialists.
Wikipedia determines the recognizability of a name by seeing what verifiable reliable sources in English call the subject.
Reliable sources use both transmitter and transmitting station.

Radio stations trading frequencies
What is the proper procedure when two stations trade frequencies? At one time I thought that the history of the frequency should be in the article, but if the call letters and format prior to the switch are long-established, perhaps the history should stay with the call letters, even when changes in format or letters or both took place years earlier.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 16:06, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Category:radio actors
Hello, not sure if this is the right place to bring this up, but i was wondering if it would be sensible/ possible to make "British radio actors" (i've been looking at this, and i only know about British actors really, i have looked at other nationalities) a subcategory of "British voice actors". Not all voice actors work in radio, but (and do correct me if i'm wrong) all radio actors are voice actors and it would save on adding two categories. Any thoughts? What happened to the notability policy for radio shows?
I swear there was a policy/guideline indicating that radio shows are notable if they are broadcast nationally. We've lost one BBC Radio show article already and I'm trying in vain to save a second but I'm being challenged to prove it. I know there was a policy because I remember citing it in the past, but I can no longer find it. If the policy has been discontinued, that's going to make a bad scene for radio show articles in general, especially older shows that might not be covered in Time magazine the way Wikipedia's notability policies seem to require these days.
