Newsletter

I think I proposed it earlier, but would having a monthly newsletter help in building this WikiProject? AecisBrievenbus 23:15, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

It could improve enthusiasm and focus efforts and make us aware of achievements, however who will write it? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 12:16, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

In a monthly newsletter should be news about this project. What news items were you thinking about? Maybe we can start a Collaboration of the Month on one article at a time? Starting one month in advance the users that are planning to contribute can vote for articles. – Ilse@ 17:52, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
For examples of collaborations of other projects, see Template:COTWs. – Ilse@ 18:00, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
This is what a Collaboration of the Month could look like: User:Ilse@/collaboration. – Ilse@ 20:06, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
The news items covered in a newsletter could be things like: important new articles, new members, featured (FA, FL, FT, FI, FP) and good (GA) content, the way real world developments affect the content of articles within this WikiProject, RfCs and RfArbs related to the WikiProject, etcetera. Vereniging Basisinkomen

Hello wikiproject members,

User:Guido den Broeder wishes to add information to the Vereniging Basisinkomen page, but since he is the treasurer he has a conflict of interest. I am unable to read the sources that he wishes to use to assert the edit is worth making. Could someone on the wikiproject review please? Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested

Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! You can find the draft guidelines here. Thanks for your help as we look to build consensus and improve Wikipedia! - Richc80 (talk) 13:36, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

C- class

Recently an additional class has become available for assessment. The C-class. (see Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment).
This class would cover the gap, perceived by many between start class and B class articles.
Addition to projects is voluntary.
What would this mean for us.

  • B-class requirements are becoming stricter; ie more emphasis on accuracy, comprehensiveness, references and style.
  • All current B and start class articles need to be re-evaluated as the C-class will contain several of those. (but we can take out time for that I think as there is no pressing urgency).

So do we want to add this additional level in our project:(Arnoutf (talk) 09:16, 22 June 2008 (UTC))

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 21:09, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Netherlands

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Image needs replacement

Hello all...

An image used in the Amersfoort article, specifically Image:Amersfoortse Kei.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

You have your mission, take your camera and start clicking.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 21:54, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Priority articles within this project's scope

Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Expanded

m:List of articles every Wikipedia should have

Ilse@ 13:29, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

replaced Redlinked Dutch Masters with Dutch Golden Age painting)

I think this is a good way for our improvement drive. However we have to come to deal with the (by now) multiple priority lists.
In my view the expanded Vital Article list is not very reliable (look e.g, at the Olympics section that features about 90% US athletes), nor stable. It is currently undergoing non-reviewed rapid expansion from about 2,000 to its newly formed aim of 10,000. So I would be very hesitant to take that list as guiding. I think the 1000 article Wikipedia:Vital articles is more essential (and it does not fully copy Core topics.....). Arnoutf (talk) 15:05, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps we should add a qualifier to the template. I will have to think about that. Arnoutf (talk) 15:06, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
None of the articles on the expanded list are among the 1,000 vital articles, so in my opinion Wikipedia:Vital articles is not very useful for this particular project. Perhaps a realistic subgoal for the articles above is improving them to B-class quality. – Ilse@ 15:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Yup you are right. Yet the expanded list is not very satisficing to me as it is not (yet) well monitored and with a quick reading seems to present an American view of the world (both Gouda and Edam cheese but not Amsterdam, Polders or the Rhine rivers (which are in the 3rd list you quote).
Nevertheless I think these kind of priorities should be a standing improvement drive motivation. My approach would be to take the "Core-topic and List of articles every Wikipedia should have" articles and focus on these first. (also because they are the fewest) Arnoutf (talk) 16:20, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
I think that one article per month (Collaboration of the month) with a set goal (e.g. from C-class to B-class) is more useful than the current Article Improvement Drive with one article of each assessment class. If others agree, we should change the inactive Template:WPNetherlands Improvement. – Ilse@ 17:33, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Agree, seemed like a good idea at the time but is not working in practice. I think we should use the table above as priority list for improvement candidates. Arnoutf (talk) 19:35, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. Britain stood alone against the Axis in 1940

There is a current discussion over at Talk:United Kingdom over who stood alongside Britain in 1940 against the Axis. There is a dispute over the need of the word "unoccupied" in the sentence: At one stage in 1940, amid the Battle of Britain, it was the only unoccupied nation in Europe fighting the Axis. At issue is whether the forces of occupied nations such as Poland, Norway, the Netherlands, etc. should be acknowledged, or whether Britain was the only nation in Europe fighting the Axis at that point in time. The discussion is at Talk:United Kingdom#At one stage in 1940, amid the Battle of Britain, it stood alone against the Axis.. Regards,--Skeezix1000 (talk) 16:53, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Help wanted confirming that Hezbollah is listed as terrorist in the Netherlands

It is stated in Hezbollah that the organisation is a proscribed terrorist organisation in Holland. Unfortunately the link is to a dead page on the foreign ministry site and the Dutch Wikipedia doesn't give a reference though confirms that Hezbollah is listed in the Netherlands. I've tried looking at the English pages on that site and those for the justice and interior ministries and anti-terrorism agency, but have been unsucessful. Googling for "lijst van terroristische organisaties" seems to come up with EU-related pages. I have, however, found this Dutch document[2]. Could a Dutch speaker please confirm by belief that the minister says that Hezbollah is proscribed in Holland and that the Dutch list hasn't been abolished in favour of the EU one? Alternatively could someone please link the official list of proscribed terrorist organisations? Thanks.--Peter cohen (talk) 19:43, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

The letter you dug up is a rather relevant document as it contains the report of answers of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (cf Secretary of State in the US) to questions from the Dutch parliament on this issue.
I can briefly summarise the letter by the Dutch minister of October 08 (very rough translation)
Q1: Do you know Hezbollah is not on the EU list Ans1: Yes I do, the message is however only partially correct. The Netherlands DO consider Hezbollah a terrorist organisation. There is however no Dutch list, where Hezbollah is placed on.
Q2: Why is Hezbollah on the Dutch and UK list of terrorist organisations. Ans2: The AIVD (Dutch secret service) reported in 2004 that Hezbollah External Security Organisation is engaged in terrorism, and also that this branch, togehter with all other branches is a single organisation. Therefore the Netherlands considers all of Hezbollah a single organisation (which means the political branch is also part of the terrorist organisation - My remark Arnoutf). The Netherlands have stressed this point to the EU but it has not been taken up. The UK position is different. They classify the executive and military branch of Hezbollah on their list, but not the political branch (translation interpretation: While the Dutch do not distinguish between the branches).
Q3: What will you do to get Hezbollah on the EU list Ans3: In the light of new dialogue in Lebanon and everything like that an EU consensus is unlikely at this moment (very much summarised translation)
Q4: Can you state which organisation are on the EU list. Ans4: Yes that list is regularly published online and is freely available to all.
Summarised: There is no Dutch "list". However the Netherlands deviate from the EU in naming the whole Hezbollah organisation a terrorist organisation. (The British name executive and military terrorist). Reading from the tone of the letter you found, there seems no big movement to change that status quo. So I guess it is still valid.
I hope this helps. Arnoutf (talk) 20:01, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Thank you very much for this. You say your translation was "quick and dirty". You were most certianly quick - less than 20 minutes from my post to your answer. I've now corrected Hezbollah and have hopefully headed off a potential revert war there.--Peter cohen (talk) 20:34, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello all, in an attempt to address any English bias, I would be very grateful if any dutch-speaking person knew of or could find any folklore, or history of hunting or, or any other information on, the Ruff in their native country which might not be covered in the article currently at FAC.

Herman van Veen

I had a look at the Herman van Veen article, and found a nice article with a lot of facts, and not even one source. So I added some tags, and I hope editors will start working on it. Debresser (talk) 21:10, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

I removed the biography section, because it was directly copied from his homepage. I added a source and cleaned up the remainder of the article. Rubenescio (talk) 09:34, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Naming convention?

I'm doing a rewrite of Kiliaen van Rensselaer (merchant) (see work space) and am running into (what I find to be) odd naming conventions. One of the people to be mentioned in the article is "Wolfert van Bijler Wijnandsz", but this person is referred to only as "van Bijler" after a full-name introduction in the source text. What is the "Wijnandsz" part? Also, Kiliaen's first wife is referred to as "Hillegond van Bijler Jansdr." when introduced in the source, but then only referred to as "van Bijler" later on. I've seen Jandsdr. elsewhere. What does it mean?

One more thing: I'd like to include a pronunciation guide in all articles related to the name "Rensselaer". Here in Rensselaer County (my home), and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (my alma mater), we pronounce "Rensselaer" as either RENS-lur or Rens-uh-LEER. Can anyone confirm if this is indeed how it's pronounced in Dutch and whether or not the pronunciation may have changed since Kiliaen van Rensselaers's time? I appreciate the help! wadester16 06:59, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello Wadester, that's an impressive article you're starting/rewriting! A Dutchman probably better known with you in America then here in Holland. Makes interesting reading. For the Dutch (archaic) naming conventions: Wijnandsz is short for Wijnandszoon, which means "son of Wijnand", in other words: Wolfert van Bijler had a father named Wijnand. Correspondingly Jansdr is short for Jansdochter, "daughter of Jan", Hillegond's father was named Jan.
For the pronunciation, Rensselaer is an obsolete spelling (only still used in names). The letter e was formerly used to indicate a long vowel-pronunciation of the preceding vowel, i.e. Rensselaer would in current Dutch spelling be written as Rensselaar and it is pronounced accordingly: Rens-uhl-ARE. This is also the way the name would be pronounced in the 17th century. Hope this is helpful to you, Goodness Shamrock (talk) 08:57, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Parish of Oude Kerk

I'm doing a rewrite on Kiliaen van Rensselaer, who lived from c. 1585-1640s. He was a patron of the Oude Kerk. Could somebody tell me, based on this information, what sect of Christianity he identified with? wadester16 00:50, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

This would be the Dutch Reformed Church. In that time known as: Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk (literally: Lower German Reformed Church). Goodness Shamrock (talk) 09:03, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Naming conventions

I'm confused by the naming conventions of this project, especially in light of WP:UE. The project doesn't seem to be using any particular convention at all, with some articles using English translations and some preferring the original Dutch. In the field of government, for instance, why Rijkswaterstaat, when its parent department is Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management and its subsidiaries are Water board (The Netherlands)? In the arts and education, why Rijksmonument (Netherlands) and Rijksmuseum, and Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum — but Naturalis (with a bolded in-article lead preferencing the full English name), Leiden University, and National Museum of Ethnology? I'm trying to figure out the rationale, but it seems like there are things of "equal obscurity" being treated different ways. CzechOut | 02:53, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

The Rijksmonument article is at that title because that is what they are. "State monument" is a translation, but that is not what they are called. The Rijksmuseum also is its proper name. You don's see references to the "State museum" in tourist guides, do you? Mjroots (talk) 10:00, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Rijksmonuments

Many Dutch buildings which have articles on the English Wikipedia are likely to be listed as Rijksmonuments. The challenge is to find a reliable reference for the listing, and add the articles to Category:Rijksmonuments and the List of Rijksmonuments. Any members willing to assist in this? Mjroots (talk) 09:54, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

OK, I know that Wikipedia isn't a RS, but the nl:Categorie:Rijksmonument may be of assistance here. Mjroots (talk) 11:46, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Infobox national maps

Just recently, another national map has been added to the info box of Dutch municipalities. But they already have suitable locator maps. In my opinion, this is just overkill and makes the info box needlessly long and cluttered. What is consensus of WikiProject Netherlands on this? -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 12:46, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Unnecessary to have two locator maps on an article. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 13:13, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Agree, one map is enough. I already removed the 2nd map from Utrecht (city) earlier. Arnoutf (talk) 16:44, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
And indeed this pin map is not at all standard for Wikipedia. Consider e.g. that none of London, New York City, Paris, Beijing or Tokyo to name but a few minor villages uses these locator maps. Arnoutf (talk) 18:04, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Furthermore Wikipedia:WikiProject_Dutch_municipalities#Infobox explcitily states that A MAP (singular) is to be added to the infobox, and even identifies which map, this should be.
In my view above arguments show beyond reasonable doubt that (a) There is no larger Wikipedia consensus that pin maps are to be used on all municipalities. (b) Within the relevant Dutch Municipalities project there is standing consensus that the pin maps are not to be used for Dutch municipalities. Arnoutf (talk) 18:16, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Interesting, though that that is exactly what {{Dutch town locator maps}} does. Rich Farmbrough, 20:01, 28 September 2009 (UTC).

Ok, I should have been more explicit "there is standing consensus that the pin maps are not to be used for Dutch municipalities in the infobox.".
In any case I think
  • Two maps in an infobox is too much; especially since the information is largely duplicated.
  • The current maps are smaller, and provide a location in the Netherlands, as well as the shape of the municipalities. Therefore these maps are preferable (my take on infoboxes is that they can only be informative if they provide at first glance all the information, and should therefore preferably have a maximum size of 1 screen). Arnoutf (talk) 20:18, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

maybe start at Gold? Rich Farmbrough, 15:16, 29 September 2009 (UTC).

Disagree. It is pretty important to have a national locator of the actual city within a country. The United States is the biggest culprit of failing to comply with this because of bias, most people around the world have no idea where maps of counties actually are within America. The reason why those global cities don't is that they are such huge cities that they form conurbations and major urban districts which are better shown as city provinces on a national map rather than a dot like London. Small municipalities and towns differ in this respect. As for using two maps one for municipality regionally and national locator of a town or city itself is pretty standard on here. This might not be the case for the municipal maps but the very localised maps of villages which don't show where it actually is in the netherlands are in desperate need of a national locator. If you disgaree and ar elikely to revert me I cannot be bothered to edit and try to improve the articles about villages and towns like Blerick which didn't have any maps at all. Himalayan 15:18, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

  • First, the existing municipal locator maps provide enough surroundings to be able to locate it within national context (IMO). As for Blerick, it is an unincorporated place, so obviously it will never have a municipal locator map. Second, national locator maps are not standard use at all. Especially in larger countries, only the regional or provincial map is shown. Third, our biggest concern is that it is overlapping info and makes the boxes so huge, especially since national maps are often so large in themselves. This clutters the info and makes the "at-a-glance" stats ineffective. I would like to see the info boxes abridged even more to show just a few stats, but that's an entire different arguement... -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 18:50, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
You're wrong in this respect. If you browse articles about towns in any country in the world the vast majority use national pin maps. The more Angophone countries however, particularly if larger tend to use regional maps. Netherlands is a relatively small country so using a national map is fine, particularly if it about a village which has no other map or the village map is very localised and not very good for identifying where in the Netherlands it is. Himalayan 10:40, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

After looking again at the municipal locator maps for the Netherlands, they already have little national maps included! See commons: category:SVG maps of municipalities in the Netherlands. Adding another national map is entirely overkill! -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 19:00, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes the maps all exist in beautiful pairs per the project page. They are the ones to go for at the moment I think. Rich Farmbrough, 23:22, 29 September 2009 (UTC).
But as Himalayan says, they only exist for municipalities. Rich Farmbrough, 23:36, 29 September 2009 (UTC).

I have no objection to only using the municipal maps in articles about municipalities as they do give some indcator of national location. However for towns and villages which either have no map or have alocalised village locator which does little to help the reader where it actually is then I would say failure to use the pin map would be inappropriate. I still would not exactly describe a regional municpal map and a pin map as "overkill" you obviously haven't seen some articles where they use three maps, that is overkill Himalayan 10:37, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

  • As I stated right from the start, this discussion only applies to Dutch municipalities. I never objected to using pin maps for other places that don't already have locator maps. Anyway, glad there is consensus... -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 16:30, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
And even some of the villages have a map of this type by their own (see e.g. Haarzuilens, for an example, although sadly also of overcrowding of maps).
Re Gold. I think some people have been utterly carried away with the concept infobox. Political figures is another one where political offices can take pages to wade through to come to the relevant stuff (date of birth etc.). Arnoutf (talk) 19:08, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Orange and the Dutch flag

Greetings. For our image of the Dutch flag at Wikipedia, we use the document "NEN 3055:1958 - Kleuren voor textielgoederen - Vlaggekleuren - Rood en blauw" for the colors. I also found that there is a similar document called "NEN 3203:1958 - Kleuren voor textielgoederen - Vlaggekleuren - Oranje" that is available to the public for 21,60 Euro (the first doc is available at that price). So, if anyone has this document handy, or can find it easily, can we find out what the CIE value of the Orange used for the Dutch flag (like the orange ribbons used above the flag)? Dakleer

What is the English translation of "Dakleer"? apparently used as a cladding for buildings. Is it roofing felt over weatherboards? Mjroots (talk) 07:44, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

I found "dakleer" described as 'paper covered with tar or bitumen', I'm not sure wich one of the two, and it is used as outer layer to cover roofs. (dak = roof and leer = leather => "roofleather")--Antiphus (talk) 19:18, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Word origin question

I'm wondering if anybody that speaks Dutch could comment on the origin of the name of a local creek called the Poesten Kill. Kill is obviously old Dutch for creek, but I have conflicting evidence regarding the first part of the name. One of the sources states that Poesten means "frothy", "foamy", or "bubbly" in old Dutch. (The other source says it comes from the name of a local farmer, which is probably more likely.) Can anyone comment on whether or not they're familiar with the word poesten meaning frothy (or anything else, for that matter) in Dutch? upstateNYer 23:01, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Minor cleanup needed at Dutch Virgin Islands

I Google-Translated the article Dutch Virgin Islands from nl.wiki, but there were a few things that I couldn't quite clear up. Worth expanding Ruit van Bonjol?

Is Ruit van Bonjol worth expanding, or should I just go ahead with the deletion? There's a nl.wiki article and a nice pic, but is it worth having? Oh, and should I have a better English title? MatthewVanitas (talk) 07:45, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

The article nl:Senegambia (17e eeuw) seems notable (though not totally sure what to call it in English). It's short, but somehow the way it's written makes it nigh-incomprehensible in GoogleTranslate. If any Dutch speaker wants to take a stab at it, it may be worth having on en.wiki. MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:46, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Hello Matthew. I'm working on the translation and I've called the article Senegambia (Dutch West India Company). Feel free to change this if you consider it wise. Because English is not my native tongue it can't be expected that the translation will be perfect grammarwise. Needless to say that I welcome any improvements made. Cheers, --Antiphus (talk) 09:04, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Translation of Chinezenmoord?

I ran across this article on nl.wiki and gTranslated the lede to at least get a stub going. Also found a pic on Google and uploaded it. This seems like a really engaging topic, maybe worth translating more of the nl.wiki article? MatthewVanitas (talk) 09:42, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

I have had two battles regarding links from the English language Wikipedia to articles in the Dutch language Wikipedia. In both cases, other editors have attempted to revoke the links that I placed in the list of winners of the Elfstedentocht to the Dutch articles where, in my judgement, there would never be an English language article. Do members of this group have any comments?

BTW, I am half Dutch and half English by parentage, but having been taught Afrikaans at school will never have the ability to write in Dutch (though I can read it). Martinvl (talk) 20:21, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

FYI - A massive discussion is taking place at a Request for comment (RfC) Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people. About 50k of articles are currently unreferenced and therefore in danger of deletion, some of those are on Dutch subjects. I have added the proper template on the main page to have a bot generate the cleanup list after some days (hopefully). The cleanup link in the title above (now a redlink) will then point to a list of unreferenced articles with the WikiProject Netherlands template on its talk page. Please revise articles on the list, when possible,

  1. review them for contentious unsourced information pr WP:BLP concerns
  2. add references (you may e.g. lift references from the Dutch page, if that page exists)
  3. remove the {{BLP unsourced}} template from the article.

Dutch knighthoods

A while back, somebody depopulated the Category:Dutch knights, removing baseball players Sidney Ponson, Calvin Maduro, and Gene Kingsale, all of whom have received the Order of Orange-Nassau, in the grade Knight. The edit summary said "A decoration is not a knighthood." Soon afterward, the Category:Dutch knights was deleted for being empty.

Can anyone clarify whether it is correct to refer to members of the Order of Orange-Nassau, in the grade Knight, as "Dutch knights"? Thanks. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 05:40, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes the order of O-N is a dutch knighhood. See Category:Orders of knighthood of the Netherlands
However I would not support creation of a category Dutch knights as there are thousands (if not tens of thousands) knights in the Netherlands (especially in the orders of Oranje-Nassau and the Netherlands Lion. Arnoutf (talk) 16:23, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
