Ratings vs guidelines

[edit]

The ratings don't seem to follow the guidelines listed at the top. So I fixed some of them. Additionally, Tarski and Turing are definitely "top" according to the guideline. --C S (Talk) 19:37, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, but we have to be careful not to overrate contemporary mathematicians. I reverted your edits mainly for technical reasons, but on reflection I would suggest a more conservative approach to uprating mathematicians importance for the moment. I have made a few minor changes on talk pages myself, but the guidelines at the moment are not very clear, so some more discussion is needed. In particular, I think it is important that we add extra weight to the mathematical side of the contribution. So, while Turing is Top class in many respects (for instance in Computer Science), a High rating in mathematics is not unreasonable, in comparison, say, with Cantor and Godel.
