GOCE template: Proposed modifications

[edit]

There's a sentence in the GOCE template that's bothering me. It's "The Guild welcomes all editors with a good grasp of English and of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines to help in the drive to improve articles." First, shouldn't the "policies and guidelines" link instead be to the MOS, or else ", most importantly the Manual of Style" should be after "policies and guidelines"? Second, the second "of" (before "Wikipedia's") isn't needed. Anyone mind if I modify this? (I'm also interested in a way to, when desired, suppress the "on" before the date field, to accomodate for copyedits that go from one month to another (for instance, "on 17 February 2012 - 21 May 2012" doesn't really look right), but that will take some fiddling around in a sandbox.) I mostly agree with your ideas, except why not link "a good grasp of English" to WP:MOS, and leave the policies link as is? You get the best of both worlds that way. Torchiest talkedits 18:10, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fine with your editing them, Allen. I like Torchiest's idea about linking to the MoS subtly. We only need its full glory for FA -- even GA only requires quite a small percentage of the MoS, explicitly excluding the main document. The current requirement to know the MoS is quite intimidating (it delayed my starting off here by 2 drives). There are levels of copy editing, and we need to welcome people who who can, and are willing to, turn a stinky article into something readable, even if the ndashes aren't quite right.
For the date, I usually just give the date of completion (when I remove the {{GOCEinuse}}), rather than the range. But if you'd like to design parameters to allow a range, no problem. --Stfg (talk) 18:36, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for amending the template, Allens. The ideas are good. -- Dianna (talk) 19:04, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Quite welcome; done (with Torchiest's modification, which I likewise agree with). I'll try to research the other one. Allens (talk | contribs) 21:24, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:SOB non-compliance

[edit]

Hi! I noticed that some of the userboxes do not seem to comply with the Manual of Style sub-policy WP:SOB. The reason why they do not comply is that they have the text "Guild of Copy Editors" (which is a link) followed by another link to drives or blitzes. According to WP:SOB, however, two links should not be placed right in a row. Therefore, I propose that sentences such as "Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Reduction Drives" be changed to "Backlog Reduction Drives for the Guild of Copy Editors" to comply with WP:SOB.  Done. Thanks for noticing. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:34, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I updated {{GOCEinuse}} in order to prevent the template from adding this page to its hidden category for pages that have it transcluded for more than 24 hours. It suppresses that feature if it's transcluded on a page in the Wikipedia namespace.

I tested the change out on the template's sandbox and on Wikipedia:Sandbox before implementing it, but if my change has caused any problems please revert them and let me know. TitanAndromeda 01:04, 29 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
