Article Improvement Drive

[edit]

Under the Article Improvement Drive section there are many biographies listed for expansion. I checked several, but not all, of them and it appears that many have been expanded upon. Can we start deleting names from the list?--MorrisIV (talk) 04:48, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Go right ahead! :) -- Earl Andrew - talk 04:54, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm done going through the section. The ones who are remaining mostly have just one reference and I think a second one would be good to have particularly since internet sites can come and go rather quickly. --MorrisIV (talk) 20:30, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Sports Reference died... and reborn as Olympedia.org[1]. So I started to check existing link to it (or adding link) in Wikidata for Olympian curlers (for "demo"-Olympians 1988, 1992 too :) this info wasn't existed in "old SR" as I could see because curling was "not an official Olympic event"). For example look at Stefan Holmén. And I changed all links to WCF/WCT/IOC/TeamUSA (and so on) in "External links" section to pair {{sports links}} and (if I can find it) {{curlingzone}}. After that "link's list to main player's profiles" looks better as I can see. For now I did it for (add yours if you do it too):

Question about adding "playing hand" (or "delivery") line to Inforbox Curler

[edit]

Maybe someone can add "playing hand" (or "delivery") line to {{Infobox curler}}? This parameter exists in Wikidata (and I add it because in Rus-Wiki infobox "Спортсмен"-"Sportsmen" get this value from WD and shows autimatically, like other "info from WD" as sex, "name in native language", birth/death date and place, country, height, mass etc. - it's very useful! I wonder that we haven't this "automation" in "infobox curler"). For most of curlers it's "right-handed" of course - but for some (as Dana Ferguson) it's "left-handed". Is this info needed for readers, what you can say? -- Alexey Gustow (talk) 20:03, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I would support this, though the terminology would have to be "delivers" or "throws". -- Earl Andrew - talk 21:46, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think it could be somewhat useful, and probably not to hard to find references to support, but I’m wondering how crucial it is to building a good understanding of the curler? Most of the time, I don't feel it's particularly notable information. But I'm not opposed. (Also, should this thread be moved to WT:CURLING?) Allthegoldmedals (talk) 23:37, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Because site of Swedish Curling Association (Svenska Curlingförbundet) was modified some months ago (in late of 2020), links to lists of men's and women's curlers now not works correct (produced "error message" on Swedish at Curling.Se site). Those lists exists in web-archive, so it needed to modified links in articles about Swedish curlers by adding to {{cite web}}:
for man - "|archiveurl=http://web.archive.org/web/20200922202406/http://www.curling.se/FOLJA/LandslagsspelaregenomtidernaHerrar/#H |archivedate=2020-09-22 |url-status=dead" (as in Mikael Hasselborg, look at "/#H" at the end of url),
for woman - "|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20190909173724/http://www.curling.se/folja/landslagsspelaregenomtidernadamer/#A |archivedate=2019-09-22 |url-status=dead" (as in Ingrid Appelquist, look at "/#A" at the end of url). -- Alexey Gustow (talk) 19:05, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Canada's men and women national team

[edit]
@Earl Andrew: you said "Not sure these are a good idea given the context of curling. I think we should discuss it as a community first."

Wondering if you could elaborate on that, Canada's national teams are the strongest in the sport and now that Curling in Canada is a thing, I think it would make even more sense to have two pages dedicated to them, especially that national team pages are common throughout Wikipedia, even on ones where a country isn't particularly renowned to be good at the sport like Canada national cricket team and Canada women's national cricket team Thequebecborder (talk) 15:11, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In the past, the "Canadian national men's curling team" was just the winner of the Brier (and for the women, the Hearts), so having a standalone article for the men's and women's teams didn't really make sense. Now with the Pan-Continental Cup being a thing (and the Olympics, of course), it might make more sense, but I'm not 100% convinced. Also, would the article cover Team Canada at the Scotties and Brier? I would think we should get the community involved as this would be a significant departure from how we have been doing things, as we don't have articles on any other national teams. If there is support from the other curling editors, then I'm OK with pursuing this. If we do write articles on the Canadian teams, then we would have to do so for all the other major curling countries as well, and we would probably have to begin having those little flag templates to re-direct to those articles like you see in other sports. Seems like a lot of work! -- Earl Andrew - talk 15:23, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For me, in Ru-Wiki I make articles about national teams (not only for curling, but for softball, rugby etc.) - because years before me there was a community (wiki-editors who writes about any sports) consensus that such articles are good place to collect "summary" information how the country (not club teams) competed at Worlds, Euros etc. (history of competing, line-ups etc.) - and now Ru-Wiki has articles about all (almost, about 200+) curling national teams: men's, women's, mixed, MD, men's senior, women's senior, (NO juniors), wheelchair MDs. Good example of "pool of national teams" also is on Netherlands Wiki, look at nl:Categorie:Nationaal curlingteam (218 national teams).
It's usable thing I think.
And I have template in RuWiki for link to such article (for write to article about Worlds, for example), named something like "CuNT" (curling national team) with 3 parameters: (1st) country IOC-code (CAN, Rus etc), (2nd) 1-2-3 letters for "what team" ("m" - men's, "w" - womens, "mx", "md", "jm" - junior men's, "sw" - senior womens, "wh", "whd" - wheelchair MD etc.), (3rd) any text (optional); for example, look in Ru-Wiki to article about 2010 World Women's Curling Championship here.
I see En-Wiki has a category for national teams Category:National sports teams for various sports - so I don't know why curling nat.teams not exists here?
But... I'm "from other language" ;) it's decision of Eng-talking Wiki-people. -- Alexey Gustow (talk) 18:25, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
😂 We probably want to avoid "CuNT" as an abbreviation! -- Earl Andrew - talk 21:05, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
{{NTCurl|NZL|m|All Blacks (men)}} looks good too I mean ;) -- Alexey Gustow (talk) 23:26, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see Earl's point here – the way that Canada's national curling teams work are quite different from other team sports, in that there are many individual curling teams in Canada that play against each other in the Scotties/Brier/Olympic Trials/etc to then become the national team (as opposed to individual players being selected to join the national team). The question I have, because of this, is what would the new pages dedicated to the national teams add to Wikipedia? That is, what is the gap in the current knowledge base that could be filled? I only ask because I don't see the answer immediately. Individual curlers' pages have the info about their teams, championships, and relevant info about when and whether they were on the national team (i.e. represented Canada internationally). The Scotties/Brier/Trials/etc pages have lists of all the winners, who are thus the national team. If curling in Canada had some kind of "national team program," then this would be a good place for it, but as far as I know that doesn't really exist. Even when a team wins a national championship, they still operate as the same team they were before becoming the "national team." Curious to hear thoughts on this. Allthegoldmedals (talk) 12:14, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it's important to create dedicated Wikipedia pages for Canada's Curling National Teams. These teams have consistently dominated the sport and have a rich history of success. Documenting their achievements and providing comprehensive information about their performances would be valuable for curling enthusiasts and fans who want to learn more about the teams.
Thequebecborder (talk) 19:34, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How about you put that information in the Curling in Canada article, and then if there is a consensus, we can create articles on the national teams? -- Earl Andrew - talk 21:15, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
