Welcome & How to Get Started

[edit]

UPDATE: The scope of the project has broadened to add genderfluid, non-binary, and intersex people to the days of the year, with an interest in prioritizing people of color.

An informal list of people to add can be found here. This is not a definitive list, feel free to find and edit yourself.

Please note that any entries to Days of the Year will require inline citations as of January, 2018. Natalie Bueno Vasquez (talk) 16:56, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome! This is a project to add more women to Wikipedia's Days of the Year(DOY). Per the original Inspire Idea page,

Wikipedia's Days of the Year pages are used by many people to get a snapshot of history on a particular day. The events, births, and deaths listed are disproportionately about men. I propose a project that makes a concerted effort to add the accomplishments and achievements of women.

That's the main goal of this project: find women who are notable and add links to them on the DOY pages.

What role would you like to play?

Research, I don't want to edit. Here you go!
I'd like to just to straight edits, I don't want to have to look for things. Go here!
I'd like to do some analysis. Right over here!

Doing the research and adding women to this list

[edit]

If you'd like to add a woman to this list, you can start anywhere with any woman. You need to be sure that she:

  1. has a wikipedia page that is not a stub article,
  2. has a definite date of birth, death, and/or major accomplishment, and
  3. is not already listed on the date in question.

I find it best to have a tab open with the days of the year (link) to quickly check to see if the woman I'm looking at is already listed.

When editing the next section, it's simplest to format your entry this way:

# [<link to wikipedia page> <woman's name>]

For example:

# [https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Empress_Yang_Yan Empress Yang Yan]
# [https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Lady_Zhen Lady Zhen]

becomes this:

  1. Empress Yang Yan
  2. Lady Zhen

She's already listed on that date as an observance of the Church. Natalie Bueno Vasquez (talk) 18:52, 8 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Editing the Days of the Year

[edit]

Editing notes

  1. Please be sure to put births and deaths in their proper section. They should not be listed under "Events".
  2. To make finding edits easier, you can add "WDOY project addition" to your edit comments
  3. From User: Shir-El too, when adding information about someone, words like "reformer," "activist" aren't enough; added things like 'active in women's sufferage and Anti-Slavery movements.' If we want people to read about them, they need to know why. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Natalie Bueno Vasquez (talkcontribs) 18:49, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Evaluations

[edit]

Evaluation/analysis has taken the form of a simple count by hand of men vs women. Most of the time male and female names are easily distinguishable. For a small percentage of links, you'll need to follow a link to see if the subject is male or female.

Below are the first analyses. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Natalie Bueno Vasquez (talkcontribs) 01:57, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]

This was a count of the men and women listed on the page. I'm less confident of the count on Events because it's not clear whether kings/leaders in battle should be counted, even if they are listed by name on the event itself. If so, the count (and disparity) will be higer, but it might be worth doing. Natalie Bueno Vasquez (talk) 18:59, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
