Scope

[edit]

What's the scope of this project? Does it concern only the language and its literature or does it include people and its history too? If so, we can include Tamil people and Chola dynasty under Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical Tamil#Featured articles. Let's define the scope and get going. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:43, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the section on scope, I've said: "This includes the language (Sangam Tamil), the literature, the poets, as well as Tamil history, society and culture from the Sangam period." I thought a broader scope would be better. -- Arvind 18:32, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is a pretty good scope Arvind! I can do as much as I can. I have access to a number of books on the Classical Tamil poetry, but I am no expert in this area. - Parthi 00:19, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Project Template

[edit]

May I suggest, instead of creating a project template for talk pages, please use,

{{WP India|tamil=yes}}

Please read Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Project banner for usage. It will help in the assessment project. Please let me know if you have any questions. - Ganeshk (talk) 22:16, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See Talk:Tamil_people for an example. Adding the above will categorize all tamil project articles into Category:WikiProject Classical Tamil articles. - Ganeshk (talk) 22:19, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Classical Tamil period

[edit]

What is the time period under consideration for this project. Are we only looking at Sangam age and immediate post sangam age literature? If so, are we omitting works like Kambaramayanam, Jivaka-chintamani, Periyapuranam, Tevaram, Divya Prabandams, etc? - Parthi 01:12, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Inactivity

[edit]

I agree with Parthi's proposal to expand this project to include all Tamil literature. And I'm sorry for not being active on this front. I'll soon start with yaappilakkanam. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:26, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The project isn't supposed to be just about the literature, it's supposed to cover the literature amongst other things (language, history). If you would like to expand it to be Wikiproject:Tamil, please go ahead - though for obvious reasons I would very much like to keep politics out of it, and that will be difficult with a broader focus.
I'm halfway through a piece on Iraiyanar Akapporul, which I should be done with in a week or so, hopefully. I'm finding getting any free time a little difficult, hence the inactivity. -- Arvind 10:33, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, let's keep politics etc., out of this and have language and literature alone as our focus. I'm currently busy with my off-wiki life, Tamil wiki, and a bot for Tamil Wiktionary. I'll definitely catch up in about two weeks. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 10:57, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Naming Convention for Caste Names

[edit]

Is there a discussion board for Tamil Nadu / Tamil related issues. I have a doubt with regarding to naming conventions. I feel that the name of Paravars will be better than Paravas (the same criteria of "R" being added to all the caste names like maravars rather than maravas) as it is the spelling in the official List of government of Tamil Nadu. What is your opinion. Please discuss to let us reach a consensus Doctor Bruno 15:56, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Self reference

[edit]

Please avoid self references on the article namespace. I have removed the Category:WikiProject Classical Tamil from some articles. If you wish to categorize, please use the project banner, {{WP India|tamil=yes}} on the talk page. Please let me know if you have any questions. Sorry if I sound like a teacher. Most times I do. :) - Ganeshk (talk) 05:18, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Project directory

[edit]

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 15:14, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Day Awards

[edit]

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:34, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A More Broader WikiProject on Tamil heritage

[edit]

Hello everybody,

I would like to bring to your attention a suggestion to create a WikiProject Tamil Heritage. WikiProject Tamil Heritage will cover everything from language, literature, dance, martial arts, history, and more. I see that there are a couple other Tamil WikiProjects started. Perhaps we can have them under WikiProject Tamil Heritage? WikiProject Tamil Heritage would also cover topics on Tamils in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and elsewhere. Please let me know what you all think. Thank you and Happy New Year.

Articles to expand

[edit]

I've started a few articles relating to Sangam age history and am trying to see if more content can be added to them to make them reviewable. Not to mention the lead section and the general narration that need lot more work. Please edit these articles, as you see fit:

With more content, each article above can stand on its own (for ex: the religion article needs more write up on Buddhism, Jainism and Animism). Once we have some more articles on Arts, Geography and Politics of this period, they can also rolled up into Ancient Tamil country.

The Pandyan articles most probably are generic enough to be called "Ancient Tamil...." but I sourced them from Pandyan-related books so I titled them that way. Lotlil 14:15, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

collaboration of the history projects

[edit]

Hi, I'm newly appointed coordinator of the Wikipedia: WikiProject History. I was coordinator of the Wikipedia: WikiProject Military History before. My scope is to improve the cooperation among the different history projects andf use the synergy of a common infrastructure to improve article quality. One idea would be to merge small project into a larger wikiproject history with a common infrastructure and the small projects continuing independently as task forces of this project. What are your suggestions? Greetings Wandalstouring 15:12, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

TinucherianBot can automatically tag articles with {{WP India}} Banner as {{WP India|class=|importance=}} to the talk page of articles without the project banner. It can also add the workgroup paramaters like "|kerala=yes|kerala-importance=" etc ,if needed. The currently supported workgroups are Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Bengal, Goa, Himachal Pradesh , Karnataka , Punjab, cities, Cinema, Literature, Protected Areas of India, History, Politics, states, Geography,Maps,Districts and Tamil.

If you need so, you need to provide me with the Categories to run the Bot. Due to some technical issues, the Bot will not run recursively to sub-categories. The requester should kindly verify that there are NO non-related articles in the category.
You may request for the bot run on my talk page... Thanks -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 06:43, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlists

[edit]

To help this workgroup patrol existing articles for vandalism/recent changes, Ganeshbot has created the Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical Tamil/Articles page. This page will be updated on a regular basis. Please do remind me if I forget. :) It contains articles that were tagged with the India banner and fall under the scope of this workgroup. Please let me know in case of any questions. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 11:34, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup listings

[edit]

User:WolterBot has created a Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical Tamil/Cleanup listing page; it contains the articles that fall under the scope this workgroup and have cleanup tags on them. See this page for more information on this works. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 04:03, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

[edit]

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Classical Tamil

[edit]

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! WP 1.0 bot announcement

[edit]

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:09, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced living people articles bot

[edit]

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical Tamil/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical Tamil/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 01:15, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Classical Tamil articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Classical Tamil articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

WikiProject cleanup listing

[edit]

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 21:18, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am Muthusamy.R. I am interested in contributing in Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical Tamil. If acceptable kindly communicate. Iramuthusamy (talk) 16:58, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live!

[edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is this project dead?

[edit]

@Sundar: @Srkris: @Iramuthusamy: @Rasnaboy: @Iambatman2022: @Irtapil:, is this project dead? If so, can i mark it as such in the header? I'm asking because there has been no conversation on this talk page page for at least 10 years. Many people keep adding articles to this project by mistake, thinking they are adding articles to the Tamil Nadu project. If this project is marked as dead, we can get the relevant template changed so that this is not an issue. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 03:42, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
