Abandoning Project

[edit]

In the process of creating this project, I ran into performance issues when running the Metadate template on Wikipedia servers. To fix, I created a second template, called “Metayear” and optimized it to be able to handle millions of dates per second.

However, I was perplexed when Metayear could only parse thousands of dates per second. Eventually, I figured out that Mediawiki and Scribunto have a relatively massive overhead when calling a Lua template.

This means that in its current state, there is a significant chance that The Wikipedia higher ups will not be okay with allowing templates from this project on the site.

Over the past couple of days, I have considered getting the green light to work on this project. However, I have decided that I will no longer be contributing to Wikipedia or any Mediawiki-powered site for that matter, because I feel like I can have a much better impact on the world writing code for other open source projects.

If anyone thinks they can bring this project to fruition, feel free to take it over. Make sure to read my Lua code so you don’t waste time making the same mistakes as me. MatthewUtzig (talk) 20:31, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
