Kaʻiulani

Kaʻiulani (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kə'ʔi.u.'lɐni]; Victoria Kawēkiu Kaʻiulani Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Cleghorn; October 16, 1875 – March 6, 1899) was the only child of Princess Miriam Likelike, and the last heir apparent to the throne of the Hawaiian Kingdom. She was the niece of King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani. After the death of her mother, Princess Kaʻiulani was sent to Europe at age 13 to complete her education under the guardianship of British businessman and Hawaiian sugar investor Theo H. Davies. She had not yet reached her eighteenth birthday when the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom altered her life. The Provisional Government of Hawaii rejected pleas from both her father Archibald Scott Cleghorn, and provisional president Sanford B. Dole, to seat Kaʻiulani on the throne, conditional upon the abdication of Liliʻuokalani. The Queen thought the Kingdom's best chance at justice was to relinquish her power temporarily to the United States.

The Bill

[edit]

Is it possible to get The Bill mentioned on this date? The Bill is a long-running police procedural drama that currently airs on ITV. It was on this date in 1984 that the programme was first broadcast making it 26 years old this year --5 albert square (talk) 23:06, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Only if an assertion can be made that it is the world's and/or the UK's longest running police procedural television series – or at least some other significant record. And this is stated somewhere in the lead section and not buried somewhere in the body of the article. Otherwise, it increases the chances that someone else might remove it on grounds that it is "not internationally significant or interesting enough". Cheers. OK, if we take it from when the pilot (Woodentop (The Bill) was aired, then I think yes it is the UK's longest running police procedural. Is it ok to take it from when the pilot was broadcast in 1983?
If not, then I think there may be another route. When Trudie Goodwin left the series in 2007, she held the record for the longest time someone has portrayed a policewoman. Could that be counted as a significant record for the programme too? --5 albert square (talk) 10:56, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov

[edit]

Saturday is the 200th anniversity of the death of the founder of Breslov chassidism, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. His influence is still very strong today. His writings are noted for their profound insight into human nature. Franz Kafka's Metamorphesis was based on one of his stories, and his works strongly influenced Spinoza's philosophy. 16 October - Polish Pope

[edit]

I do not understand why the above is not visible in the "on this day" page. It appears in the source but not on the main page. Is there a caching issue? In any case I consider the Pope event more important than TV show The Bill. Could someone fix this please? -84user (talk) 01:03, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I see what happened: this edit moved the Pope to a commented section. Maybe next year? For other days might I suggest using BBC's On this day page to get ideas for events to include? -84user (talk) 01:17, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
