Example of a polynomial equation, studied in elementary algebra

Algebra is the branch of mathematics that studies certain abstract systems, known as algebraic structures, and the manipulation of statements within these systems. Elementary algebra generalizes arithmetic by using variables in addition to numbers. It covers methods of transforming equations to solve them by isolating variables. Linear algebra examines systems of several linear equations and techniques to determine for which values all equations in a system are true at the same time. Abstract algebra investigates algebraic structures, which consist of a set of objects together with operations defined on that set. It distinguishes algebraic structures, such as groups, rings, and fields, based on their number of operations and the laws they follow. Algebraic methods were first studied in ancient times to solve specific problems. As algebra evolved, it became increasingly abstract and generalized, leading to many applications in other branches of mathematics and the empirical sciences. (Full article...)

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (born 12 December 1948) is a Portuguese politician and academic. He has been the 20th and current president of Portugal since 9 March 2016. As a member of the Social Democratic Party, he previously served as a minister and parliamentarian in the Assembly of the Republic. I think Paul Martin's becoming Prime Minister of Canada in 2003 is worthy of mention here, afterall their have only been 21. I think it is more noteworthy than the Panay Incident, which I had never heard of until reading here, though I had heard of the other three items. Thoughts on this? I'd like to change this before December 12 if there is no objection. - Jord 00:58, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'll pass. It remains to be seen if Martin is going to be a notable PM in Canadian history or not. And we should avoid featuring him while he is campaigning for the federal election. -- PFHLai 08:37, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Clapham Junction rail crash

[edit]

http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Clapham_Junction_rail_crash

Any reason why this deserves less merit than the others listed? It was a while ago (but so were the others listed) but it was one of the worst in the UK and I believe it has merit to be listed still. 87.194.84.44 (talk) 13:50, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't have enough footnotes. See WP:OTD#Criteria for listing items on this set of pages #8. howcheng {chat} 20:07, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've rewritten it, but I suggest that it's run in 2013 as this is the 25 year anniversary. Edgepedia (talk) 18:00, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Centennial of Frank Sinatra's birth

[edit]

I am not sure of the proper manner in which to make this nomination, but the 100th anniversary of Frank Sinatra's birth (December 12, 1915) occurs this year. Based upon his accomplishments as an entertainer, he seems to be a viable candidate for listing in this year's OTD/SA. --Allen3 talk 14:25, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, DYK has organized an effort to fill the December 12 sets with Sinatra hooks. --Allen3 talk 21:56, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OK, we'll leave Sinatra out then. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 03:21, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Howcheng: DYK is not specifically mentioning the anniversary under the suggestion that it is more suited to OTD? Is there an issue with it running in tandem? --Errant (chat!) 11:43, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Usually we don't duplicate efforts between sections. If a subject is featured in TFA/POTD, we wouldn't list it in OTD either. I would think the same rule applies to DYK, but I don't remember having done this before. howcheng {chat} 16:53, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Howcheng, do you know who added Musikhjalpen to today's top of the box? I would like to object to its inclusion on the grounds of significance and poor article quality. QueensanditsCrazy (talk) 16:30, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@QueensanditsCrazy: Sorry, I'm not really involved in OTD anymore. howcheng {chat} 18:50, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
