Hi, is there a sign-up link for the Toronto WikiClub meetup up on October 20? Or do we just show up at the location? MrChaiWala (talk) 14:27, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please sign up by adding your name to here. OhanaUnitedTalk page 16:24, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide precise directions from Union Station

[edit]

So....One Yonge Street is at the corner of Yonge and Queen's Quay East. The address for the meetup is 24 Freeland Street, which according to every map I've seen is actually a construction site. If I start at the NE corner of Yonge and Queen's Quay, where do I go from there? Is the entrance on Queen's Quay? Is it at the big sign that says "One Yonge Street", or is it on the elevated walkway with the entrance on Queen's Quay? I just hate wandering around looking for someplace that should be "obvious". I know several of you have attended previous sessions, so I hope someone can paint me a picture. Thanks much. Risker (talk) 02:28, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The location is One Yonge Community Recreation Centre and not One Yonge Street : it is located at 24 Freeland Street, which is middway throigh said street, and not at the corner of Yonge and Queen's Quay.
Photos on Google Maps are from September 2021 if that's where you're looking, that's why you see a construction site. The building has been up and running for a while now. If you use their pedestrian itinerary, it is accurate. You'll probably come down on Yonge, turn on Lake Shore, then Freeland. SophieWMCA (talk) 11:06, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Note re Toronto Marathon

[edit]

Folks should be aware that October 20 is also the Toronto Marathon, and there will be multiple road closures in the Lakeshore and Bay Street areas. This will also mean that it is impossible for pedestrians to walk across many roadways. Parking will be very difficult. Best way is TTC at Union Station stop. If coming into Union Station, take the overhead walkway from Union Station to the Union Station Go Bus terminal (which gets you across Bay Street) and walk south from there. Map of route is here. Follow-up re Tor editing of Wikipedia

[edit]

During the course of today's meet-up, we had touched briefly on editing via Tor nodes. User:Benjamin Mako Hill is, amongst his many talents, an academic who has conducted some research in this area. A pre-print PDF of one of the research papers to which he has contributed on this topic can be found at this link. Benjamin has just recently become a member of the newly formed Product and Technology Advisory Council. Risker (talk) 03:43, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Risker! I continue to be interested in this topic and am happy to talk more about this stuff if folks want to! —mako 02:32, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
