news item re deal with Google
this news item seems important. just posting here for discussion; I don't have a strong opinion on this.
- Article: Google agrees to pay for beefed-up Wikipedia service | Malay Mail
- Quote: Google has agreed to pay for ramped-up Wikipedia services, part of a growing trend for the US tech giant to strike commercial deals with other web companies. The Wikimedia Foundation, the charity that oversees the online encyclopaedia, said Google was the first paying customer for its commercial venture Wikimedia Enterprise, which it launched last year. The Internet Archive, a non-profit that runs a site called the Wayback Machine that saves snapshots of websites and is used to fix Wikipedia links, will be offered the commercial services for free. Official link to join as a member
As per the chapter president, the link below is the correct page to use in order to formally join as a member of the NYC chapter.

Saturday museum
I see that admission to the classroom is free for those who pay for museum admission. Do we get in really free? Jim.henderson (talk) 17:01, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Pharos told me he spoke with the event organizers and confirmed the edit-a-thon is free for those who only want to attend it. Does this mean access to the rest of the museum? I'd hope so but can't confirm. Anyone with over 5000 photos uploaded to commons should get in to any photography museum for free, in my opinion. - Wil540 art (talk) 17:14, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
Frontier Airlines
All you can fly! Similar to All you can eat, at a restaurant. I thought some members of the wikipedia community may be interested in this offer. I purchased it myself, so hopefully it works. Frontier flies from North to South America. https://www.flyfrontier.com/deals/gowild-pass/ 65.88.88.216 (talk) 20:12, 16 February 2023 (UTC)FrankNJNY (talk) 20:18, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
OSM meeting
Somebody mentioned this event... Has that past? If not, please post a URL with info... Thanks FrankNJNY (talk) 20:43, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- @FrankNJNY: The last NYC meet-up for the local OSM group was the New York City Meetup on 29th October 2022 @ Brooklyn Public Library. Joing the talk-us-newyork mailing list to be notified of the next one.
- To keep current with events, presentations and proposals, I find that the Weekly OSM blog provides the best summary. - DutchTreat (talk) 11:04, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Past photos
Too many old ones; not enough of this year. Should cull and add. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:24, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- Good point, I agree @Jim.henderson. In my opinion, the goal of the photos on the meet-up page is to show a spread of activities to someone who might be learning about the chapter for the first time. @ComplexRational made a nice first pass on updating the pics. I think we could have a mix of current and also notable past events/events at notable locations.
- I encourage any WMNYC members to watch & help edit this page as they see fit. The "Past Events" and "Upcoming meetups and ongoing events" always need to be updated. - Wil540 art (talk) 15:46, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

2016 announcements template
I made a template for announcements in 2016 (Template:NYC meetup announcements) but it hasn't been used since. Is there any interest in retaining it? Otherwise I'll send it for deletion. czar 03:15, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
- @User:Pharos, @User:Jim.henderson, @User:Rhododendrites, @User:ComplexRational Thoughts?? I didn't know there even was a template? - Wil540 art (talk) 07:24, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
- This is the first time I'm seeing this template as well. I don't see a use for it outside transclusion to WP:Meetup/NYC or a need to maintain both the list of upcoming events and a separate template, so I wouldn't object to deletion. Complex/Rational 12:53, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
