What about articles where no free image exists (or at least we are unable to find one)? Will any fair use images be acceptable at all in featured articles? Every FA having at least one free image is a goal, not a requirement (not yet anyway). Fair use images can be used provided fair use guidelines are carefully followed, which this survey is intended to address. It is also important to survey exactly how they are being used (in critical comment or just in illustration) because the guidelines might change in the future.--Pharos 19:41, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, one would have to be creative. For example, one might have an image of something that inspired the book/song/album (say, the rolling hills outside the author's hometown, or in the easiest case, historical fiction). For some science fiction and fantasy literature, a diagram might be helpful. If nothing else, we could use a free image of the author. I'm not saying this would be possible in every case; remember it's a goal, not a requirement.--Pharos 17:32, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the above discussion, and you'll see (1) it's a goal, not a rule, and (2) there are some more creative ways of illustrating articles about copyrighted works.
