Introduction
[edit]Welcome to the course page for CRP2100: Reading the City through History and Law. This page is the main WikiProject page for our course Final Project: a Neighborhood History of a Neighborhood located in Columbus, Ohio. Our class's task is to produce a reliable, credible and well cited Wikipedia entry for the neighborhood(s) they choose.
Wikipedia is a common tool that everyday citizens use to find out about their cities, neighborhoods and learn a lot of information quickly. Wikipedia's role in democratizing information enables more informed citizenry and fosters community discussion. These effects are most powerful when an article is properly built, cited and free of bias. When articles follow these basic standards, Wikipedia’s article quality is on par with many of the world’s encyclopedias.[1][2]
The intent of this exercise is to introduce students to the complexity of constructing and disseminating information, along with demonstrating the potential pitfalls inherent in the nature of crowd-sourced encyclopedias. Additionally, summarizing vast amounts of information, while not making it sound like you’re advertising, critiquing or over-analyzing is a difficult exercise that not just Wikipedia editors, but also Planners (which students in our class are pursing to become), deal with on a daily basis.[3]
This course is utilizing and building off of the Neighborhoods in Columbus, Ohio page. Students, working in pairs, will update and add to existing page(s) they choose. Previous semesters have seen students (and the instructor) work on other local pages:
