Google search not working on AWB
Status | Fixed in the next release |
---|---|
Description | I've got the latest version (3.1.0.0), but when I do a google search that normally should produce hundreds of article names, it says "getting list" and then "list complete!" with no results. As a test, I even tried "the", with no results. Google Search was very useful for finding articles with incorrect spelling and punctuation, and fixing each instance in a matter of seconds. If this can somehow be fixed, that would be awesome. Firsfron of Ronchester 23:14, 8 February 2007 (UTC) |

Google apparently changed the HTML of their search page a tiny bit, but I've fixed it. You can download the SVN version now if you're really desperate :-) (see Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser#Getting_the_sources) —Mets501 (talk) 23:56, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- That quick? Wow. I'm seriously seriously impressed. I can hardly believe it's fixed. Not that I don't believe you. I don't understand the SVN page, so I guess I'll haveta wait for the next release. Thanks for the fix! :) Firsfron of Ronchester 00:12, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

- No problem. I don't mind waiting. I'm just glad it was an apparently easy fix. I also use CatScan, and that tool was out of order for six months. Thanks again, Firsfron of Ronchester 00:21, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

- Is this really a bug? It seems like this "bug" can be fixed by shutting down AWB before you shut down your computer. It's just hitting the red X and clicking "yes", after all. Sorry if this comment sounds impertinent. Firsfron of Ronchester 21:49, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
- This its a bug as AWB isn't working as intended, now if Mets comes back to me and says yes i know what the problem is but it will take 100 hours to fix so we arent going to put the effort in , i'd say fine it doesn't create any major issues and i'll just try to make sure to close AWB (Gnevin 23:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC))
- It may be AWB trying to force the "are you sure you want to quit?" box open. Have you tried disabling that message box? (by selecting "don't ask again") —METS501 (talk) 03:11, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Hmmm……it's refusing to work because I was replacing one category with another. If I go to the "Category tasks" selector and clear it down, the "reparse" works fine.
Is it maybe halting because it has already done the category replacement, and doesn't realise that there are further changes to be made?
I don't want to have to switch this damn thing on and off betwen articles!
HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 16:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
- It's because when you have the category replacement/removal choice set, it automatically skips articles when no category is replaced/removed. Perhaps an extra checkbox on whether to skip articles when no category is replaced/removed is in order? —METS501 (talk) 04:27, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, that would make sense. Maybe this and the corresponding option attached to the "Find and replace" facility could also be moved into the "Skip" section? HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 18:15, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
- Fixed, in SVN Rev 613
- Also did the same for the image replace, as the same problem could occur. Skip box is just currently with text 'Skip?', in the bottom of its relevant groupbox =) Reedy Boy 19:18, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

- He's talking about the list of multiple links, not the listmaker list. AWB's just reselecting the line after you click on it, so it jumps to the top of the list, and then to the link, making the link appear at the bottom. It's just a bit annoying, but I don't see any other way. —METS501 (talk) 14:21, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Regex forms don't allow empty 'replace' fields
Status | Fixed in the next release |
---|---|
Description | The 'Test regexps' and 'replace special' forms will not perform an empty replace. This makes it difficult to remove the match.
A match can still be removed by replacing with a space, but this isn't suitable for all tasks. Further, a single space in the replace field is not saved, so it must be re-added when loading settings; the 'test regexps' doesn't perform a replace containing only spaces. |

Now when I open the page in AWB it has no suggested changes. I think this is related to a bug fixed in the next release, but I'm not 100% positive. —METS501 (talk) 04:03, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- This would be because someone had inserted an empty here and between now and December 7, 2006 nobody spotted it. AWB was simply lifting a template from the end of the article to just above the categories, as it normally does. Your edit did in fact remove it, which is why no further changes were suggested. But links and links appear the same, because the s is taken into the link. The 's isn't taken into the link so Person's and Person's don't show up the same. Not that it's a big deal either way, but I assume the reason people include the 's in the link is because they think it looks nicer. I actually think it makes more sense logically not to link the 's (to be clear what article it's linking to), and it obviously takes up less space, but... just pointing out a difference. --Galaxiaad 00:52, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think we need to "fix this". It's better if only the name is linked anyway. —METS501 (talk) 03:06, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- OK, hadn't noticed what Galaxiaad had noted. I only noticed the issues because in that diff that I did by hand, the two bullet items above were both with the ' and 's outside, so I was basing it off of that. ;) — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 11:42, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

- Back on topic
- I have just been playing around, the mediawiki software doesnt log an edit conflict if the 2 edits are on the same account. But you are correct, there is nothing about the edit conflict if it is on different accounts. I shall add this in Reedy Boy 18:19, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
- From my playing about, it is impossible to get MediaWiki to register an edit conflict between the same account.
- However, i know what needs to be done to fix/alert the user of the edit conflict, but i cant work out where to put it... Waiting on Mets501 to read his email =D Reedy Boy 19:44, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
- Mets found it for me. AWB is handling the error, it just does a force reload of the page, re-applying changes, it is just not notifying the user that there has been an edit conflict. I have added a messagebox to let the users know there has been a conflict. As previously stated, you cannot do an edit conflict with your own account (ie 2 edits on 1 account). Fixed in SVN Rev 622 Reedy Boy 18:11, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- Good work, but believe it or not, it is possible to have an edit conflict with yourself; it has happened to me several times. Sometimes (very rarely) when you press "Save page", the changes go through but your web browser fails to navigate to the next page, and when you click "Save page" again you get a self-edit conflict. —METS501 (talk) 00:02, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
- Someone did say on the #mediawiki channel they thought they had done it, but weren't sure. I was unable to duplicate it. I suppose, if the mediawiki software reports a edit conflict, this will handle that aswell. Reedy Boy 12:31, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

- Although i will be unable to duplicate this myself (Not being an admin), the fix will be easy enough, it would be a case of when the page is protected (and by default skipped), look if the account is admin, and if so, allow the edit to continue, rather than skipping. That will mean, if the user is listed as an admin on the AWB checklist, they can edit the page, but of course, only if they are a proper 'wiki admin'
The bit about, adminbot was confusing. So i'll leave it as such until i've spoken to Mets501, or you can clarify. Ie, if they are just a bot, they cannot edit a page with full protect. If they were an admin, and a bot, they could, but the account would have to currently be listed in Admin, so, maybe a section for 'adminbot' and then AWB can handle that, meaning they can edit...?
As as far as i know, AWB just goes by its own checklists! Reedy Boy 14:05, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, that should work. Our checklists are pretty accurate, and I don't think we have any admin-bots running AWB; if we do, we'll need a new checkpage section :-) Will test on my account tonight. —METS501 (talk) 14:28, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
- I'll leave it as so for the moment. =) Thanks Reedy Boy 14:29, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
- I encountered this problem while running Pathosbot through my account, and I'm listed as an administrator, so presumably it will be fixed in the next release. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 18:52:17, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
- Pathosbot is listed as a 'bot', you are listed as an admin for AWB. So, this change will affect you, but your bot still wont be able to edit it. As it does it from which ever account is logged on in IE Reedy Boy 19:22, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
- I'm aware of that. When I said I was 'running Pathosbot through my account', I meant I logged the AutoWikiBrowser into my administrator account. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 06:22:59, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, ok, so doing its tasks on your admin account. Gotchya. That should be sorted then =) Reedy Boy 10:24, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

I think it just needs some way to check for the namespace and remove it if needed... Reedy Boy 22:33, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

- Better option needed to cater for all interwiki's - RegexOptions.IgnoreCase needed, and a .ToLower needed on the language to force to lowercase. Reedy Boy 20:27, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Ie, to loop through all the Interwiki's and see if they are in the text... And it is supposed to replace them if they are with their lowercase versions...
But doesnt seem to work... Waiting on Mets501 Reedy Boy 22:06, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

- I think you can either let the users click on everything, or nothing, which wouldnt be very much use if it was the first. Im sure we can do it to override the login. Or, just put a logout function on the file menu - Special:Userlogout? Of course, with the relevant wiki link prefixed. If you would just like a logout, we can do that, and then, we can put the login override, ie if user clicks login, and whether actually logged in or not, they are taken to teh login page? Strange conversion of newline in advanced find/replace

- Verified. See what you mean, the square, if you say, copy the some[]thing to like my irc client, it shows it one line. But press enter, and it pastes it on 2 lines. So it would seem the FAR is still correct, but it needs saving in the xml as like some\r\nthing, and then when loaded, c# would parse it and show it on 2 lines. Will look at changing the save tommorow, its 2am for me, and i need some sleep. Signing off Reedy Boy 02:09, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- That would be great. A bit of a waste to see all my settings go down the drain (I had the feeling there was also something else going wrong when I loaded that file (old settings format, it contains several rules with subrules, not one rule with subrules with subrules ..)). As a note, some programs do convert unix-style newlines correctly, but wikipedia does not, i.e. I did not dare to save the page to see if it would go right after saving, but it does not show correctly in the edit-box. Thanks already! --Dirk Beetstra T C 09:53, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

- And here is the cosmetic fix
From
ReplaceTextbox.Text = r.replace_; WithTextbox.Text = r.with_;
To
ReplaceTextbox.Text = Regex.Replace(r.replace_, @" ", "\r\n"); WithTextbox.Text = Regex.Replace(r.with_, @" ", "\r\n");
Ie it looks for the new line thing, and replaces it with \r\n which is newline in C#

Switches to wrong browser
Status | Not a bug/currently unresolvable |
---|---|
Description | When editing as Pathosbot with Internet Explorer while I edit as Pathoschild with Firefox, the bot will seemingly randomly switch to Firefox and edit as Pathoschild (see example edit). It will continue to edit through Firefox (with Internet Explorer still logged in as Pathosbot) until I reopen AutoWikiBrowser, which switches it back to Internet Explorer (until it happens again). It started doing this today, but I haven't upgraded anything recently (I'm using AWB 3.1.2). |

- Hello gregul. I think I see the problem.
\b
is an anchor which matches one of these zero-length positions:- between the start or end of the string and a word character (digits or letters).
- between a word character and a non-word character.
- In the case of the string "tyś.", \b will only match before the t or between ś and the dot (word and non-word character). Since the dot is not a word character, \b will not match after it unless it is immediately followed by a word character (for example, "tyś.f"). —{admin} Pathoschild 20:20:00, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

- The following patterns (entire text, single line mode) might fix the problem if this is done with regex. They will temporarily replace one template nested in persondata with delimiters that don't cause the conflict; run them two or three times if you expect up to two or three nested templates. This is heuristic at best, unfortunately.

AWB 3.3.0.1 zip file has incorrect directory setup - updater throwing exceptions
Status | Fixed in the next release |

Description | The new 3.3.0.1 zip file has a different directory structure to releases before it. In the zip there is a folder called AutoWikiBrowser3300 which holds the files. Edit summaries on find & replace using regex
Status | Fixed in the next release |
---|---|
Description | Edit summaries are misleading when making multiple (not identical) changes of the same kind. Keesiewonder talk 23:56, 27 March 2007 (UTC) |
To duplicate: | Use 'normal' find & replace to edit multiple occurrences of similar but not identical entries. Example: Find anything of the form ASIN: XXXXXXXXXX and replace it with XXXXXXXXXX. The edit summary reports that Y of the first find were changed, when really it was Y changes, with each find generally for a different XXXXXXXXXX. Please see this edit for a specific example. Perhaps an alternate edit summary for find & replace when regular expressions are used would read, for an example like mine, (clean up; Replaced: ASIN: X → ASIN X (6) using AWB) |
Operating system | XP |
.NET FW Version | Unknown |
AWB version | 3.2.0.0 |
Workaround | Uncheck 'Add replacements to edit summary'. |
Fixed in version | Unknown |
- The edit summary seems dependent on the original find/replace, even if editing subsequent to the proposed changes is done. In this case, I chose to not go with the adjusted format of the ASINs but to replace with OCLCs. The edit summary speaks to the original find/replace, even though I edited the article to be otherwise before issuing 'save.' I've also seen this behavior when I opt out of spelling changes suggested by AWB. The article saves as I request, but the edit summary indicates I did something I did not. Keesiewonder talk 01:15, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Fixed, now dynamic edit summaries will be discarded if the user changed the text manually. MaxSem 18:52, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

- I've seen it in other cases where it stays alive (im sure). In the same way. I tend to do a Application.Exit() or similar on the last form closing... Kills it off. Just check it out and we'll do something about it if necessary. 83.218.148.13 16:41, 3 April 2007 (UTC) (Reedy Boy)
- Another bug, almost certainly caused by the new startup code: Load a settings file containing plugin settings as soon as AWB starts, and the plugin settings aren't applied because the plugin hasn't been initialized yet. Another bug, in debug mode: the sandbox doesn't get added to the article list for a few seconds (first thing I do is clear list).

Fixed in version | Unknown |
If you try the same thing manually, e.g. , you'll get similar results, so it's a problem of templates, not AWB. Shall we remove |subst=subst:? MaxSem 10:33, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, it's a problem manually also. I know WP:TW is programmed to use the regular subst when no parameter is provided and to use the subst=subst: when there is a parameter. If AWB can be programmed to do this, that would be great. If it can't, just take out the subst=subst: part. It'll just make the coding a little long. The subst=subst: hack just shortens the coding a bit for the parserfunctions. --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@(Lets go Yankees!) 14:03, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

- As MaxSem says, this is more of an issue with templates. However, I believe that Special:Expandtemplate does the job properly, and this function is in the current release (but I'd advise against using it due to a unicode bug). The unicode bug is fixed in SVN, and will be in the next release (possibly this weekend). This is the sort of result ExpandTemplates gives. Martinp23 18:26, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- To clarify - in the next release, AWB will subst user warnings using Expandtemplates. Martinp23 18:27, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

- Yep - it has to query the page. Hopefully, at some point, there will be something like "subst" that we can put in front of a template to run it through ExpandTemplates. For now, though, we've got to wait for this fix to arrive! Martinp23 11:21, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

There's definitely a problem - I encountered it yesterday, but I just can't figure out the details. What I have tried: before experimenting I reset all setings and checked "Regular expression" and "Singleline" checkboxes.
- ^.*$ → foo $1. Result: foo $1 (no capture group).
- ^.*$ → foo $0. Result: foo <pagetext>.
- ^.*$ → foo $0, apply # of times: 2. Result: foo foo <pagetext>, similar to Pathoschild's one.

- In the next version, pages which are skipped will be logged, then you can easily add them back into the main list. This log also records the reason that the page wasn't saved, so you can pick up on false positives in the list generation (etc). - Possibly you have "minimise to system tray" checked in General\User and project preferences? That might actually be a clue to what's happening, if AWB is hiding itself in the tray then the minimise code is kicking in. --kingboyk 22:43, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

over-large edit box

- Thats actually a new feature, that can be reverted. It is there to give users a larger editing area if needed. To change back, Click on General --> Enlarge Edit Area. That should solve the problem. =) Reedy Boy 09:47, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- No, I thought of that, but my problem is that the edit box is too large in its "small" state, i.e. when the "Enlarge Edit Area" is unchecked. (When it's checked, it completely fills the bottom of the screen; when it's unchecked, it takes up 2/3rds of my screen and, as I said, covers the other boxes). Would you like to see a screenprint? Bencherlite 11:12, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- It would probably help if you could upload one somewhere - what is your current screen resolution? Martinp23 11:47, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- And font size? MaxSem 11:54, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for trying to help, much appreciated. Screenprint now at User:Bencherlite/sandbox 1920 x 1200 pixels (large laptop screen), font size normal. Haven't changed the screen resolution or font size since the previous version of AWB, which was fine. Bencherlite 12:01, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- The way the bottom bit was laid out was changed in the current version, to allow the enlarging edit box. I presume its something to do with the anchoring and the resolution you use. Mines only 1280x1024.. Take it yours is a 19" monitor. Your make list area looks a bit funny too.... Whats it like if you dont have it maximised? Does it look ok then? (removing indent) Still same issue when it's not maximised. The top half of the AWB page adjusts to fit, but the left-hand edge of the edit box stays fixed as you make the page larger / smaller (until it reaches the minimum page size). Have tried a couple of different screen resolutions (including 1280x1024) with no success. Bencherlite 12:15, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- This does seem strange - when I get a chance, I'll try it out on my 19" monitor, but I suspect that I wouldn't have a problem, considering that you've said that you've tried different resolutions. I'm confused about what could cause it - do you have any unusual settings active? Martinp23 14:57, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- None that I can think of - the only other change I made recently was to switch from IE to Firefox, but I still have the same problem with AWB even after uninstalling Firefox and restarting. Have tried a few more screen resolutions, restarting AWB/the computer, giving the computer a good talking-to, etc, without success... Bencherlite 15:58, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- Can you try downloading a fresh AWB manually, and running it from a new directory for me? Cheers Reedy Boy 16:38, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

if (!isIE) {

- Suppose the other way, is get the GetDiff() to look if TheArticle.ArticleText =="", then if so, do something different... Reedy Boy 21:17, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- Done it a better way
public static unsafe string GetDiff(string text1, string text2, int context) { byte[] buf1; if (text1 == "") buf1 = new byte[1]; else buf1 = ToUTF8(text1); byte[] buf2 = ToUTF8(text2); string res; fixed (byte* p1 = buf1) fixed (byte* p2 = buf2) { byte* diff = wikidiff2_do_diff(p1, p2, context); if (diff == null) return ""; res = FromUTF8(diff); wikidiff2_free(diff); } return EnhanceDiff(res); }
If text1 (ie current article text) is nothing, a new blank byte array is declared. Otherwise, it just does the normal on the text. This allows blank pages to be diffed against a page with additions! Reedy Boy 22:17, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

- There's a good chance this isn't AWB's fault. There have been new message issues on and off for days with WP. You may want to wait on it and see... — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 20:31, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- Oh. I think I found the problem. You have to be logged into Internet Explorer before you click it (you have to log in directly on IE, not on AWB). I don't know why though, as I would expect AWB to log itself in since it uses IE. --TeckWiz is now R ParlateContribs@(Lets go Yankees!) 20:45, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds like an IE issue. Or, maybe you don't click "remember me" when logging in? If you've told Wikipedia to remember you the cookie which AWB and IE share should take care of it. --kingboyk 18:35, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- Not a bug? It's actually expected behaviour in Vista/IE. Cookies and that in a web browser control are generally not applied to the actual browser session. Solution: Logout of your user account, login to the bot account, clear the message and log back into your user account. You don't need to do this for AWB though. Thought: Open up talkpage messages in AWB instead of another browser, with the option of giving a reply. --NigelJ talk SIMPLE 12:59, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

AWB needs updating to reflect changes to the m:interwiki sorting order, there is now a interwiki 'be-x-old' which is not recongised by AWB atm, you could please add 'be-x-old' to after 'be' in all cases and possibly release a version bump reflecting this change (as it causes all users selecting 'apply general fixes' to move the link to the wrong place. diff --NigelJ talk SIMPLE 14:09, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- The change can be made, but doing a release is quite difficult. AWB has had some major overhauls that havent been tested, and the new diff engine is still in development... Reedy Boy 20:33, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- Obviously the source for 3.9.1.0 still exists (on SVN at least), whats wrong with grabbing that, add the fix and release as 3.9.1.1? --NigelJ talk SIMPLE 23:00, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- I suppose, that could be done. But is it really a major fix? Ie is it breaking a lot of links... If it is major, then sure, its important and we can sort it. Reedy Boy 08:38, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, because be-x-old is not classed by AWB as an interwiki link, it gets moved to just under the article, and looses sorting. In a way, it'd be nice if the three interwiki link orders where to be grabbed from a wikipage instead of hardcoded, (like typo fixes), but that isn't as urgent as been able to run general fixes without destroying interwiki ordering at the moment. --NigelJ talk SIMPLE 23:48, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

- Do you know if the titles need to be emboldened, and AWB is not. Or is it a false positive in the DB Scanner? Reedy Boy 19:13, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- The database scanner finds the bad titles like it's supposed to. Also, after AWB loads the article, it seems to identify the title in text that needs to be emboldened. It's just the actual emboldening that doesn't happen. --Hautala 19:26, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- rev 1158 - Thanks for this report. It highlighted 2 problems. 1, the diff checker was skipping articles when there were changes, and it shouldn't have been (part of your problem) - this wasnt needed, as this had already been checked. Also, the title emboldener was looking for an image... For some strange reason! Reedy Boy 14:57, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
