Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free-content encyclopedia project operated by the Wikimedia Foundation and based on an openly editable model. Wikipedia's articles provide links to guide the user to related pages with additional information. Wikipedia is written collaboratively by largely anonymous Internet volunteers who write without pay. Anyone with Internet access can write and make changes to Wikipedia articles, except in limited cases where editing is restricted to prevent disruption or vandalism. Users can contribute anonymously, under a pseudonym, or, if they choose to, with their real identity.[1]
Wikipedia Club Pune is an initiative to increase quality content on Wikipedia and its sister projects. It is a one-of-a-kind Club in India and it is the first attempt at bringing the Wikipedia organization to this country. It provides a community for citizens to learn more and teach others about contributing to Wikimedia projects. The Club holds several workshops, activities and projects round the year and volunteers are encouraged to join and participate in its activities. SeeWikipedia Club Pune and its Facebook Page for more details.
Spoken Indian Language Wikipedia is a project undertaken by Wikipedia Club Pune to give a voice to the Indian community and to create a knowledge domain of information related to India and Indian languages through audio recordings of the articles (in various native Indian languages). The project will support these articles on English Wikipedia and the important ones would be functional on Wikipedia of certain Indian languages as well. Thus, the aim of the project is twofold - to create articles on India and Indian languages and to have them recorded as audio files thereafter. SeeSpoken Wikipedia.
Spoken Wikipedia is a primary goal in the agenda of the Summit and it has been discussed in detail on the second day of the same.
The Wikipedia Summit Pune 2013 is a two-day event organized and hosted by Wikipedia Club Pune to promote Wikipedia as an effective means of education, to empower and to reach out to India, to bring it under a spotlight through Spoken Wikipedia , and to bridge the gendergap that is sadly existing in our milieu. The Summit will be an action-oriented event where several University Directors and Deans will participate to prepare an agenda and action plan, to be executed thereafter. SeeFacebook page.
This is an important question that needs some clearing up. The Summit is the first of its kind in India. It is held in Pune. It is not a conference. Rather, it a coming together of some of the best minds from different parts of the world and from various parts of India to discuss, examine and prepare an action plan for projects that shall run round the year, as a result of the enforcement of the agenda hereby prepared. Pune is just a host to this event.
No. Summit is language based event. Where major 20 Indian Languages along with English will be covered. As mentioned above, people from all over the country are invited and it caters to a structured plan for the country as well and not just for a particular state or city. Pune is merely the host.
For one, Wikipedia Club Pune, is host of the event. Numerous activities and projects are run by the Club throughout the year in Pune. Further, the city has a long tradition that precedes it. It also has its own extraordinary global scenario which makes the place ideal for the onset of Wikipedia events and activities. Also, the Summit is not an end in itself. It is an initiative which has prolonged projects associated with it that shall follow, continuing through the year, after the agenda has been prepared. SeeWhy Pune?
The aim of the Summit is to bring together ideas for the promotion of Wikipedia in India and the ways it can help in the field of education. India would be effectively represented and put under a spotlight through projects like Spoken Wikipedia. Further, the issues of health and gender-gap would be discussed in detail and an agenda would be formed by the end of the Summit. This action plan would be followed through projects and activities that would continue throughout the year, until the next Summit. SeeAgenda and Program.
