The course explores the documentary form as a medium for visual storytelling through a comprehensive analysis of its historical development and contemporary films. Students will examine key filmmakers, cinematic techniques, and significant works that have shaped its role in film and television. They will analyze the works and impact of key documentarists, influential movements, and landmark films that have shaped the genre. Students will also explore various documentary styles, from observational and participatory to poetic and reflexive, and examine how each approach engages with reality and shapes cultural discourse. This course encourages students to understand documentary as a dynamic and ever-evolving storytelling form that employs diverse cinematic tools to engage with social, political, and cultural realities. Students will gain insight into the aesthetic, ethical, and narrative techniques that define documentaries through readings, film screenings, critical discussions, and research.
