This seminar invites students to examine and compare historical and contemporary examples of science in action in social and political realms. We will explore how people and the environment are affected by issues ranging from environmental conservation to climate change; genetic and chemical engineering; militarization; AI and robotics. We will also explore consequential ideas such as eugenics and the precautionary principle; diversity and representation. Students will also explore how scientists and organizations communicate science effectively to share findings, address skeptics and mobilize others to create change.
Through the Wikipedia assignment, students will work together to contribute to updating an existing (Start or C) page, especially that has not been updated for some time, on a topic related to those listed above or one of their choice.
The research associated with the assignment research for students who will lead a class discussion on the topic.
Students may also, instead of a final research paper, contribute substantial input on an existing page or create a new page - after consultation with the instructor (and a WikiEdu staff).
