This course will cover the history, theory, and practice of museum work and scholarship. We examine museums and how they represent race, cultures, and identities, history and social memory, collections and ideas, colonial ideologies and Indigenous worldviews. Through case studies week to week, we will explore a range of museums and cultural heritage institutions such as archives, libraries, and heritage sites, as well as zoos, aquariums, and science centers. We also analyze how institutions are engaging with critical contemporary issues, especially of race and identity, and how they are grappling with public controversies in the midst of a sea change toward participatory cultures and digital engagement.
