This class covers a wide range of topics focusing on the exploration of the Solar System and the evolution of planets. The class starts by the formation of the Sun and the Planets from an astronomical perspective. Then we will study the chemical composition of the Earth and other planets using the fundamental chemical blocks that are meteorites. This will lead us to the understanding of planetary aggregation and differentiation in various layers (core, mantle, crust and atmosphere). At this point we will start looking into geological processes that affect planetary surfaces: meteoritic impacts, volcanism, tectonics and erosion. Finally we will look at the telluric planets and moons (Mercury, Venus, the Moon, Mars and icy moons) to study their geology in more detail.
