The 2016 U.S. presidential election thrust immigration policy into the center of America’s ongoing culture wars with huge ramifications for millions of Californians. In this class, we look to the past (and writing about the past) to gain perspective on the contemporary moment. We survey the changing ways scholars have written about migration, citizenship, ethnicity, and race over the past century, and develop more informed assessments of the contemporary situation. We explore the ways immigrants have shaped, and been shaped by American culture, federal and local policy, the character of immigrant community institutions, and the wider context of global migration. We then use our knowledge to improve Wikipedia, one of the most widely used information sources on the planet.
