This course provides an interdisciplinary and critical examination of art and architecture of Brazil, from 1500 through the early twenty-first century. We examine art and architecture in the context of major historical events from the colonial, imperial, and national periods through the present. Key themes include artistic engagement with race and the national imaginary; the formation of collective identities; the impacts of social and political shifts; the reception and transformation of European art; primitivisms and futurities; modernist architecture and urbanism; artists working with Afro-Brazilian cultural forms; and contemporary Indigenous artists.
