The course is a general introduction to Roman religion as a specific case of a polytheistic religion. Whereas the main aim of the course is to introduce the living practice of Roman religion, it aims also at several subordinate goals – to provide the basic elements of and insights into what a polytheistic religion is, to show how it functioned both in the small urban world of Republican Rome and the much wider cosmopolitan world of Imperial Rome, and to introduce basic elements of religious studies. Students will participate in a semester-long research assignment in which they fill in content gaps about ancient Italic and Roman religion. Their research will draw on both primary textual resources and also archaeological evidence.
