Welcome! In this seminar you will learn a lot about modern Japanese history, and you will do this mainly by engaging with Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. You first choose a topic of modern Japanese history that interests you, collect/read scholarly materials on your topic, and write/edit a Wikipedia page on your topic. Afterwards, someone in the Wikipedia community may dispute or make suggestions on your contributions, to which you are expected to respond responsibly and constructively. Your contributions may not get much attention from other Wiki editors, but that is totally ok and will not affect your final grade negatively. You will be graded based on your own overall commitment to learning.

Don’t worry if you are new to Wikipedia. While you will make your own unique contributions to Wikipedia, you are not going to do all this alone. Wikipedia offers great resources to help you oriented in the world of Wiki editing, and we will also work closely with the staff of our University library. What’s more, you and your classmates will help each other. And, of course, I will help you every step of the way.

By editing Wikipedia, you will not only learn about modern Japanese history but also improve your ability to read reflectively and write convincingly. Furthermore, through this unique tool of Wikipedia, you will understand the process through which “historical facts” are produced, shared, and revised.

This course is the first half of your yearlong research project. In this course (“Seminar I”), you will learn about a topic of your choice via Wikipedia editing. Next semester (“Seminar II”), you will do your own research on the same or related topic and write an original scholarly paper of 4000 words or more.



Assignments & Evaluation.

1) Weekly assignments, class participation, engagement with Wiki community (30 %)

      You are expected to do homework and participate in every class meeting. Once you start editing Wikipedia, you will get feedback from other Wikipedia editors (classmates and strangers). How well and thoughtfully you incorporate it will also be evaluated.

2) Preliminary Research (5% + 5%)

      By Tue. 5/4, you will submit a proposal (“Preliminary Research Form”) for your Wikipedia project, in which you explain how your topic can contribute to Wikipedia and what scholarly materials are available to do research. You will also draw up a schedule for the amount of reading and writing you will do every week. Once you receive feedback, you are expected to revise and develop your proposal and re-submit it by Tue. 5/11.

3) First 500 words in Wikipedia (10 %)

      By Tue. 6/8, You will write 500 words (or more) for Wikipedia. You will receive feedback from me and classmates, and you are expected to incorporate it for next round of writing.

4) First 2000 words in Wikipedia (20 %)

      By Tue. 6/22, you will write 2000 words (or more) for Wikipedia.

5) Final draft in Wikipedia (30 %)

      By Tue. 7/20, you will make significant revisions on the first draft and resubmit your draft.
