Anthropology Through Film introduces basic concepts of ethnographic film and links film content to models and methods of anthropology. Students will become familiar with and be able to describe the emergence of the genre of anthropological film, its key characteristics, ethics, and methods. They will discover how diverse communicative modes engage with visual content to deliver culturally-mediated messages. Students in the course learn to apply these models to identify the diverse perspectives involved in the production, consumption, and constitution of the "anthropological eye. As the course develops, they increasingly will evaluate visual data to discover the extent to which visual media communicate anthropological insights in contrast to other forms of knowledge productions so that they can plan and justify visual media.

- Assignment - Setting up a New Article in the Sandbox
We will use our sandboxes. Goals include: adding the outline structure to the article draft; drafting a lead for the article, and adding at least two bibliographic references that are from anthropology journals or edited books from academic publishers. It will look rough at this point. That's okay!

- Assignment - Integrating Wider Contexts and Representations
There's an old saying that "you can't edit yourself." Fresh eyes spot what's needed! You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes. Possibly feedback gives you an idea to improve. Add at least two changes to your draft based on the feedback.

- Assignment - Growing From Sandbox to Wikipedia Mainspace
Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace." We carefully move our work, a few sentences at a time, into the mainspace. We'll still be using our sandboxes for drafting and preparing language to move to the main article. Focus on adding material where there are gaps in the coverage of a section of our article.

- Assignment - Taking Our Articles to the Next Level
Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media. Explicitly edit the lead (does it work? Is it informative?, check the film synopsis (can a person get a sense of the story arc of this film from your description?) and build information useful for the film background.

Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

It's the final week to develop your article.
- Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
- Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert at any time!
Remember to proofread information about the film production, your bibliographic references and citations, and check the links to related articles and work. Take a look at class members' articles and add to or improve at least one item in an article they are creating.
