This course will introduce students to the New York City art world, providing the critical tools and historical perspectives to confidently engage with this culture in all its richness and diversity. Lectures will examine historical periods against the backdrops of the NYC neighborhoods that helped to define them, from the founding of the Metropolitan Museum to the emergence of alternative and virtual spaces. Class will highlight particular artists of each period and invite exploration of museums and galleries, and deep dives into their digital collections. The class will also participate in a visit to a working artist’s studio. Exercises in a sense-based approach to art criticism will equip students with tools to make intelligent inquiries into even the most opaque contemporary art practices.
Students will examine the museum’s role in writing cultural histories, the various problems that arise from conventional representations of art history, and will explore Wikipedia as a means of advocating for underrepresented voices.
