This course examines the coupled biological, geochemical, and physical processes that control elemental cycling in the Earth system, with an emphasis on global change. Topics include the biotic and abiotic cycling of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, metals, and water, and their dynamics across multiple spatiotemporal scales, e.g. nanometer to global, deep time to present. Principles of mass balance, kinetics, and thermodynamics will be used to analyze and predict system behavior and to assess human impacts to biogeochemical cycles. The course incorporates extensive readings from the primary literature.
