How does one study a culture that spans more than two millennia? Which themes, literary forms, and poetic images reappear throughout the years in a culture with such a long history? How are the familiar touchstones of the culture reinterpreted, reimagined, and remade over the centuries? In this introductory course, we will find answers to these questions by studying Armenian literary productions from the 19th through the 21st centuries that have been translated into English. We will read prayers, poems, songs, short stories, novels, and plays written by exceptional members of the Western-Armenian-speaking world. No knowledge of Armenian is required; however, students with Armenian reading abilities are welcome to join our discussions by reading the texts in Armenian.
Students will edit, amend, and add to knowledge on the web about Armenian culture using our course materials (published books, peer-reviewed articles).
