Course Description
.
This course maps, analyzes, and reflects critically on the major theories of economic development. We will use a comparative lens to study the economic, political, social determinants of the developmental processes in several countries. To do this, we will employ the case study method, comparing successful and less successful countries, in order to evaluate the various policies and external factors underpinning their developmental performance. We will also investigate "underdevelopment," and its relevance to various models of development. We will also delve into the role of institutions in the accumulation of capital; by countries, companies, and individuals. What role do institutions play in creating basic welfare and a safety net for the underserved and the unbanked? What is the social and economic impact of globalization, beyond the optimistic or pessimistic scenarios of media pundits, on the different social groups in society? We will evaluate several economic policies in the broader framework of economic development, such as: protectionism, tariffs, agricultural subsidies, amongst others. Finally, this course will dissect several microeconomic theories, specifically those focusing on household and consumer behavior, and the complexities of the poverty trap in rural areas.
