Italian 301 is a high-intermediate/advanced language course designed for students who wish to expand their knowledge of Italian history, society and culture while practicing and advancing their language abilities. By exploring different textual genres and analyzing a large variety of cultural artifacts such as films, short stories, poems and pop songs, students will acquire a deeper understanding of cultural issues that characterize Italian society today.

To accomplish this task, students will be encouraged to read, analyze and also produce different types of texts (personal narratives, film reviews, letters, blog entries) that differ in purpose, style and length. As a final project, students will write a Wikipedia entry on a topic relevant to the class’s content. Through this assignment, students will hone their research skills by judiciously selecting and analyzing a variety of sources in Italian. They will act as public intellectuals, synthesizing and presenting complex information in a manner that is accessible to a general Italian-speaking audience.
