The Leader Within is a writing intensive course that provides an opportunity for students to examine their own leadership through concepts such as behavioral change, self-leadership, mindset, Emotional Intelligence, and Authentic Leadership. The course will be grounded in both theory and practice utilizing experiential and discussion-based learning. Basic concepts of self-leadership will be examined and personal leadership will be evaluated through personal reflection and the creation of a “Leadership Development Plan” (LDP) with emphasis on personal development in one’s leadership skills and knowledge. Additional focus on Emotional Intelligence (the capacity to perceive, evaluate, understand, and control emotions in oneself and in other people) and Authentic Leadership (individuals with a deep awareness of how they behave and think; they are perceived by others as being aware of their own and others’ strengths, values/moral perspective, and knowledge; are aware of their operational context; and are optimistic, confident, resilient, high on moral character, and hopeful [Avolio 2002]).
Students' Wikipedia assignment will focus on areas of growth and development necessary for leadership effectiveness.
