This page is where you will find information about meeting agenda and milestones, tasks to do before the next meeting, and links to training modules and other helpful resources. Doing these tasks are part of your grade and will help you draft a great article.

Wiki Education built this tool for use by instructors and students contributing to Wikipedia for a class assignment, and I have adapted it for us. We will talk more about the Dashboard during Week 4.

The objective of this assignment is to help you gain Wikipedia literacy and to engage in and explore the process of collective knowledge production and dissemination on the web. The assignment asks you to find an important digital/media artist, movement, genre, artist-centre, etc. that is not listed on Wikipedia and make an entry for them, or that has a very sparse entry and you substantially populate it. You can choose someone we discuss in class or find your own. You will be graded on your correctly following Wikipedia standards, your proficiency in research and use of archival material if needed.

Choose something you can make a full entry about or add substantially to an already existing page. If you want to include a figure with limited information, discuss it with me. In the event of this, you can make multiple entries.

This assignment will be done in two parts. Part 1 (the entry) will be submitted on Week 7, and Part 2 (follow-up revisions to the entry) will be submitted between Week 9 and 13.

See the syllabus for more details.

Week 7

Course meetings
Wednesday, 10 March 2021
Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace." Do not do this until you have had peer review and your prof (me, Magda) has approved it. If the work in question is sufficiently developed and of good quality, I will approve it to be moved into the article main space. This is to ensure your article doesn't end up for 'speedy deletion' although it is not guaranteed.

After it is in the mainspace, find related pages and hyperlink your entry to them. This shows importance.

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 13

Milestones

Every student has finished reviewing their assigned articles, making sure that every article has been reviewed.

Assignment - Respond to your peer review

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

  • Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have any questions.

Week 9

Course meetings
Wednesday, 24 March 2021
Assignment - Polish Your Work

Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

Assignment - Continue improving your article

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media.

Week 10

Course meetings
Wednesday, 31 March 2021
Assignment - Final article

It's the final week to respond to any editor feedback on your article and write your reflection.

  • Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
  • Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert at any time!
Milestones

Everyone should have finished all of the work they'll do on Wikipedia, and be ready for grading.
