Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, PamD, and all WIR helpers: Rough draft of the to-do list. I am not sure what the "CEE women" event is, so if anyone knows please define/explain. I'll take "Alphabet run U, V, W" as there isn't anything to discuss on that one. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:53, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- I believe it's women in Central and Eastern Europe, and the timing will be linked to meta:Wikimedia CEE Spring 2023/CEE Women :) Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 02:00, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- Yes; exactly right, Chocmilk03, so I added #270. Thanks for the great line-up, WomenArtistUpdates. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:59, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks Chocmilk03. Would you like to create the meet-up page for 270? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:38, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
- @WomenArtistUpdates: Sure, on it now :) Chocmilk03 (talk) 01:06, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks Chocmilk03! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:47, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
- Just created :) first time I've done one of these event pages, so hope it's an OK starting point! The 2019 event was referenced above, but I noted there was a 2020 event as well so I've also used that one as a basis. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 01:50, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
- More than OK! Hope you feel empowered to jump in and create meet-up pages going forward Chocmilk03. Marked as proofed. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:15, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks Chocmilk03! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:47, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
- I've created the rest of the talkpage templates. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:47, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- Disabilities here I come. Oronsay (talk) 00:34, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
- Yes; exactly right, Chocmilk03, so I added #270. Thanks for the great line-up, WomenArtistUpdates. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:59, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
So, It looks like we are down to needing a "Tip of the Month" and someone to proof-read/edit the invitation. I put the link to the main CEE event in the announcements section of the invitation. Is that what we should be announcing? Shall we skip "Tip of the Month" if no one has any suggestions? Lajmmoore, Will you be able to to the mass mail once all is finalized? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:57, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
- Since we are doing CEE women, perhaps a translation tip? "You can use the google translate ap and camera on your phone to translate text from an article or book". SusunW (talk) 18:46, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
- Brilliant. Thanks SusunW! I'll add it to the draft invite. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 19:26, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
- @WomenArtistUpdates yup just ping me when its done! Lajmmoore (talk) 06:45, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- Brilliant. Thanks SusunW! I'll add it to the draft invite. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 19:26, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
Judging from the activity and edits, I think this is good to go. Just one final query to eagle-eyed Oronsay - You've been patrolling and checking. Could you confirm that the invite looks good to go for you? Thanks! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:09, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- I've double-checked the invitation and it is ready to go, @WomenArtistUpdates. Over to you, @Lajmmoore, for its broadcast. Oronsay (talk) 21:42, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- Having said that, I've just realised that we usually also announce the #1Lib1Ref Wikipedia Library Campaign and have belatedly added that to the Invitation. Pls check that's OK before sending. Oronsay (talk) 06:47, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- This is why I call you eagle-eyed Oronsay. I added the date of the #1Lib1Ref event, since it starts in the middle of the month. Back over to you, @Lajmmoore. Thanks! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:01, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you, @WomenArtistUpdates, for your compliment (am blushing) and for adding the dates. Oronsay (talk) 16:06, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks so much both! Sent! Lajmmoore (talk) 18:29, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

- I've added new early-bird articles and images to all the May 2023 editathons now--that's my way to check that they work, and also to pre-populate the pinterest board before the month starts. All seems fine to me, thanks to everyone involved, and onward to another interesting month. Penny Richards (talk) 16:15, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- Love looking at the Pinterest boards! Visual display of quantitative information :) Here's the link to April for those who want to take a peak of this month's additions. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:49, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

TIP OF THE MONTH: * Looking for new red links? Keep an eye out for interesting and notable friends, family, or associates of your last article subject, and re-examine group photos for other women who may still need an article.
Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, PamD, and all WIR helpers: Rough draft of the to-do list. If you'd like to create a page, please respond with your desire. Two other things: We have a suggested "tip of the month" for June but Rosie would prefer we save it for July so we need another tip please. Also, if you could drop down to July 2023 and state your preference for the year long alphabet run. If you would like us to try something besides first and last name, please give some direction regarding creation of redlist to go along with any format. And if you have no preference, please add your "no preference" to the comments, so we can include your opinion in any decisions. Thanks! Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:28, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

- @WomenArtistUpdates: I thought I'd see if I could come up with a tip of the month for you -- maybe this could work: "Looking for new red links? Keep an eye out for interesting friends, family, or associates of your last article subject, and re-examine group photos for other women who may still need an article." Alanna the Brave (talk) 23:05, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, PamD, and all WIR helpers: It looks like we are ready for quality control and proof reading. Please take a page to review and change the red x to a green check . If you are shy about changing the check mark, you could just add your name to the list of participants on the page to let the group know you have reviewed it and it looks good to you. Thanks! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 23:18, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
- Suggestion: For the list of places to share the articles to after creation, would it be a good idea to add Mastodon as an option considering its greater prominence as of late with people leaving Twitter? At this point, it's the only social media I still use. By the by, reviewed the Alphabet run X, Y & Z page and it looks good. SilverserenC 02:40, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- That sounds like a good idea to me Silver seren. Would you be willing to set up the Mastodon WomenInRed account like the others (Insta and Twit)? I have no social media skills. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:16, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, I just meant having it as a letter option under the "Promote our work" section on the X, Y, & Z page and any related sections on other pages. Were those only meant to refer to the official WIR accounts sharing them? I don't feel like I'm active enough to be able to properly be in charge of a WIR social media account. SilverserenC 00:39, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

- Suggestion re: "Tip of the Month": How about rewording to "Keep an eye out for interesting and notable friends, family, or associates..."? (And then maybe we could have a future one directing everyone to notability guidelines.) Cielquiparle (talk) 07:04, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- I agree that the addition of '''and notable''' is important so I've amended Tip, above. Oronsay (talk) 20:35, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- Cielquiparle, following Oronsay's edit, I added link out to notability in the invite. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:17, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

- Thanks Oronsay. I added a link to "notability" in the invite. I won't OK because I drafted the invite and added Susan's suggestion for tip of the month. But it looks good to go to me. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:08, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

As you pioneered the alphabet runs and have been behind their continuation, you may like to update the meetup page for the new run. ff you like, I would be happy to make a first draft adding new content in connection with the most frequently redlinked women. just let me know.--Ipigott (talk) 14:02, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

- WomenArtistUpdates: Done. Hope it's not too confusing.--Ipigott (talk) 09:55, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- Ipigott, Looks good to me. I don't think it is confusing. I added a wikilink in the subheading to one of the new lists. That said I have spent some time with the lists so am learning about them so I am already familiar. As SusunW stated on the main talk page, it is a very interesting rabbit hole. I think it will be a fun exploration for seasoned editors and will probably be of less interest to new editors. Perhaps mention that the lists are in the beta phase. I think some of the more linked names are actually more than one person with the same name. Anyway we will all be learning about them together.
- Thank for the addition! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:33, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

- I've edited the draft slightly and will update the stats for 10 July before the broadcast date. The statistics for 17 July unfortunately will not be available until 20th via Humaniki. It might be worth including a list of July stats on the celebration page if we can dig them out. Oronsay (talk) 01:47, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

- Great Oronsay! I couldn't quite figure out if it should be Summer Sports or just Sports. Either way, should be popular. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:38, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- Sports appears on our Table of annual events/collaborations in July. As I am in the Southern Hemisphere it's winter here, so I think it makes sense to include all sports. WIR will probably add Winter sports to coincide with Winter Olympic years and highlight Summer Olympics when they are held. Oronsay (talk) 00:48, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

Ipigott, Rosiestep, Innisfree987, Oronsay, Started the page. Hoping statistics can be added, and anything else. Took a chance on magenta highlights. Not wed to it, but it kinda pops. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 19:58, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- It looks great. I particularly like the Thank you template that you've created. I think we should suggest that the contribution be drafted elsewhere then posted to the page to avoid edit conflict. Do you think we should say something to prevent anyone writing a book, i.e. give a word count? Not that we would necessarily police it. Oronsay (talk) 20:26, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- Glad you like it Oronsay. I do think it will be fun to send cake to those who post. I was assuming the link would go live with the July invite and the page would starting accumulating comments. On the 18th the official "Happy Anniversary" announcement would go out. I wasn't worried about length or conflicts, but I wasn't thinking about it at all :) WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:16, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- I think the page is absolutely gorgeous. The magenta is striking... and... as they say, "be bold"... well then, let's go with it! --Rosiestep (talk) 21:55, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

::::It all looks great. I like the magenta-colored announcement as well. I would really like to receive one, even though I've opted out of the monthly newsletter. Although I can't speak for everyone, I'm sure a lot of people who don't like receiving newsletters wouldn't mind receiving the announcement as a one-off on their Talk page, if they have signed up as members and/or have contributed to the project. Cielquiparle (talk) 02:29, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- I totally agree with this, it looks superb. Actually sending this, makes the point that we do not send newsletters... and the reason is not that we cannot be bothered but we realise that our members are not short of unsolicited mail to read. However, this is a birthday/thankyou card and I can't remember anyone ever complaining about getting a birthday card. Thank you Oronsay. I was wondering what to tweet on our birthday to mark the day. This is it. Victuallers (talk) 09:37, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry, no internet from 7 last night to now – start of the rainy season problems in the tropics. I think it looks really good. Thank you all for your work on it. SusunW (talk) 13:32, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- I also think it's just what we need with the striking colour. As I suggested above, I think it would be more correct to say "around 15.5%" and it might help to include the other anniversary icon on the right hand side. In my opinion, the magenta banner is all we need to send out as it contains a link to our anniversary page. Any additions could be made there.--Ipigott (talk) 14:43, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Re-run Alphabet Run? Start Month Run?
We've had great success with Alphabet Run! There will be more than a thousand articles created within this campaign alone by the time Alpha Run is done at the end of June. I, for one, have really enjoyed it and would be glad to restart it in July.
And/Or, what about "Month Run"? Note, though, that "Month Run" has far fewer name options (1 Wikidata list/month: Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Redlist index#Month of birth), so we should expect far fewer new articles created if we go with "Month Run". But it might be fun. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:39, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
- Re-run it, as is, IMO. It works. Victuallers (talk) 10:54, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- I agree. All our article subjects have names, so it's not going to run out of fuel with a second run. (If there's a strong appetite to change things up, though, I'm thinking a Decades Drive would fit the niche for me. 00s, 10s, 20s, 30s, etc., any century, birth/death/etc.) Penny Richards (talk) 16:17, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

(If there's a strong appetite to change things up, though, I'm thinking a Decades Drive would fit the niche for me. 00s, 10s, 20s, 30s, etc., any century, birth/death/etc.) Penny Richards (talk) 16:17, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
- Re-run it, as is, IMO. It works. Victuallers (talk) 10:54, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- As a result of the discussions below and the efforts of Certes, we can now extend this new alphabet run to include lists of the most frequently redlinked women. Lists for the As and Bs (for this month) as well as the Cs are now available under Alphabetical on our redlist index. I think is would be sensible to handle the most frequently redlinked women as part of the alphabet run rather than a separate event although it might be useful to include a separate list of new articles for the most frequently redlinked women. How do other contributors feel about this?--Ipigott (talk) 09:48, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

Most wanted women articles
Following up on the WiR talk page discussions, I suggest we include this as a priority, either as a separate event or perhaps in connection with A and B in the alphabet run.--Ipigott (talk) 12:14, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
- Ipigott, Certes, and Rosiestep, (cross posted from WiR main talk page. My understanding is that it IS possible to run the requested list, however due to its massive size it is best to attack the project 1 or 2 letters at a time. We are intergrating this effort into the Alphabet run (New and improved with more red links!), starting with A and B. Am I following? Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 14:48, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- It seems to me the most straightforward way would be to run lists (i.e. WIR redlists) on the first item in the article titles (as already demonstrated for the Bs) rather than complicating things with family names or whatever. For July, we could start with A and B as in the alphabetical run (with which it should be combined) with explanations in the meetup page. If Certes or anyone else on the technical side can provide any improvements, so much the better -- but I think we have what we need for starters. It's no problem for me if some of the As have already been the subject of new articles.--Ipigott (talk) 15:10, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- I'm happy with the creation of any new redlists. I think 26 of them (one per letter) makes sense -some will have more entries and others will have fewer- but prefer to defer to others to sort out what will actually work best. Appreciate all the efforts as we move forward with this; I think that our members and other editors will be pleased, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 06:00, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
- It was very enterprising of you, Rosiestep, to come up with this idea and thanks to Certes we now have a firm basis for taking things forward.--Ipigott (talk) 08:53, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

Suggested tip of the month
- Use Template:WikiProject Women in Red invite on user talk pages to attract new members.
- I think this is a really nice Tip Of The Month. Can we use it in July to coincide with WiR's 8-year anniversary? --Rosiestep (talk) 12:54, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
- I agree with you, Rosie, that this is a really good idea if we can persuade people to do something about it. Unfortunately, although the template has been around since October 2015, you can see from "What links here" that it has seldom been used. I frequently invite people to join on their talk pages but I always try to personalize my suggestions. If we are going to keep this for July, how about a tip for June? Perhaps "Make sure your user page keeps us informed of your interests and progress." (I find it strange that several of our new members have expressed their interests on our New members page but have not included anything on their own user pages.)--Ipigott (talk) 06:04, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- Ian, it doesn't really surprise me. I'm assuming that this type of editor does not want to draw attention to their interest women's representation for fear of harassment, stalking, etc. Also, I could be wrong. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:25, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

- I still think it would be a good idea for July to encourage our members to invite new editors. How about: "Look out for new contributors interested in writing about women and invite them to join Women in Red". Perhaps in August we could handle user pages.--Ipigott (talk) 18:46, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

Create a page (like a "meet-up" page) Happy 8th Anniversary Women in Red and invite members to share information about an article or articles they have created or edited for WIR. It could be anything: first article, favorite article, most recent article. We could create an 8th anniversary barnstar and send it to those who post to the anniversary page. I know we usually only use the mailing list for the invite, and I don't know the "spam" rules, but perhaps, just this one day - the 18th - we could send out an Anniversary Announcement with a link to the Anniversary page. Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, PamD, and all WIR helpers: Shall we proceed with the idea of sending out an announcement on 12 noon GMT on the 18th announcing the Women in Red 8th Anniversary? I have started a very rough draft at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Outreach/2023#July_19,_2023. Oronsay, Do you know the statistic for July 2015? My recollection is that it was around 15%. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:35, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- I know the percentage was 15.53% in October 2014. We used to see the updated percentage every 2 weeks but I can't sort out how to find it. Hoping someone else can. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:47, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- Rosiestep: Could it have been cited in this? Unfortunately I do not have access to the full article myself.--Ipigott (talk) 08:46, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- WomenArtistUpdates: I suggest you adjust the figure to "around 15.5%" and perhaps also include File:WiR8anniversary.png on the right-hand side.--Ipigott (talk) 09:04, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- I've been bold and added a table of Statistics to the Anniversary page, just need the July 2015 figure(s) to be complete. Oronsay (talk) 02:12, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- Oronsay I like the table! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:24, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- It all looks great.
- Thanks for all the feedback! Ipigott I updated the statistic. I just could NOT figure out how to get two images in that template. Right now it has the anniversary logo. Compare revisions to see the cake instead. I think it is gonna have to be one or the other, unless someone else can figure it out. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:21, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- Fabulous work. Personally I like the anniversary logo. Conceptually, the message is an invitation to join us for virtual cake, which is then supplied on visiting and contributing to the anniversary page with the "A piece of cake for you!" message. Therefore, in my view it is unnecessary to include the cake image in the invite. I am 100% overthinking this. :) Chocmilk03 (talk) 00:14, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- I've added a more prominent cake image to the anniversary page. I think this should help to solve the problem.--Ipigott (talk) 06:38, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

- I was wondering whether it would really be worthwhile to continue with the "most frequent" links as in July there has been very little interest. Up to now there have only been six new articles and I created half of them myself. Perhaps we should try it for one more month but it would be great if contributors could also pick up more of the English-speaking hits.--Ipigott (talk) 14:37, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
- I definitely think worth continuing at least a little while; people can take a little time to adopt new tools. Now I've started looking at it I've already found one woman who I want to (and will!) do an article for. The example links in particular are very useful to identify women within scope of my interests. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 22:35, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
- Me too. I am still exploring the feature. It takes a little detective work to research the name. Often multiple links are duplications/common names, but still very interesting detective work and worth keeping if it isn't too hard to create/maintain. updated items on to-do list Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, PamD, and all WIR helpers: I have updated the to-do list by commenting out Geofocus:ESEAP (#280). The page hasn't been created and I think I confused the announcement for Wikimania with a request for a geofocus event. I have also commented out the announcement for m:Interwiki Women Collaboration - Interwiki Women Collaboration. I don't see that they have planned anything for 2023. If I have this wrong and anyone wants to create the Geofocus:ESEAP page just reverse my edit. Ditto if anyone has anymore info on Interwiki Women Collaboration. Thanks. - SusunW and Yuchitown and any others interested in this, I am pinging you to ask that you take a look at the discussion from 2022 regarding the Indigenous women event (linked above). I saw that SusunW' mentioned on the Anniversary page thatthis as one of their favorite meet-ups the discussion from last year points up the issue that the Indigenous peoples of North America are less than thrilled with our contributions. My opinion, as I mentioned last year, is that we should NOT have this event. The sensitivity surrounding "claims of Native identity" should be respected and I don't think we can make a disclaimer big enough to make this suitable for a meet-up. How are you leaning? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:39, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- There are so many resources here on Wikipedia for vetting Indigenous identity, starting with the essay WP:NDNID. People can always ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America; many editors are happy to provide assistance and suggestions there. Don't relay on older reference guides by non-Native authors and do consult recent Indigenous sources, like Native News Online, Muskrat Magazine, or Nunatsiaq News and you should be fine. Inuit Art Quarterly is a fantastic resource for notable Inuit. Yuchitown (talk) 04:10, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Yuchitown
- I think it's always been an annual event and is an important one for both diversity and lack of representation. I don't really see how it is any different than an editathon for any other specialized field, i.e. physics, mathematics, art, opera, etc. If an editor has questions, as Yuchitown says, ask those who have specialized knowledge. The troublesome period in the US is mostly between 1940 and 1990, because in that period the US government policy aimed to destroy tribal identity. From 1968 policy changes began to allow tribes began to reorganize their governments and enact policies to define who legally were members. So sources in that period need to be scrutinized. But, no one is saying all indigenous people are from the US. Indigenous people are hugely underrepresented in the encyclopedic record world wide and people who are uncomfortable trying to surmount the US issue can write about other places, or simply choose not to participate at all. I'm not in favor of canceling it, but will go with consensus. SusunW (talk) 05:47, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- As stated by SusunW, not all indigenous people are from the US (there are plenty of notable Sámi and Ainu women, for example). I think as long as we include a note to be careful/mindful when writing about NorthAm indigenous people with regards to tribal membership, then I think that is sufficient. Curbon7 (talk) 08:11, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- FYI, artists hanging in major museums in the US should not present any problems, as after passage of the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990, it is a federal crime to misrepresent Native artworks produced after 1935 and carries really large fines. SusunW (talk) 14:48, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, that is not true (search Gina Adams or Merritt Johnson online). IACA only covers art sales, not its labeling in museums, but anyone here with questions can always ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America. Editors there will happily answer questions and help locate appropriate published, secondary sources. Yuchitown (talk) 20:52, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Yuchitown
