Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikisource/Wikisource linkfarms

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Welcome to the linkfarm section of Wikiproject Wikisource. This page is intended to co-ordinate work towards the goal of reducing unnecessary linkfarms at the end of Wikipedia articles.

Objective

[edit]

Per WP:LINKFARM, "excessive lists can dwarf articles and detract from the purpose of Wikipedia." Some articles, however, have long lists of links to texts on Wikisource. This is unnecessary as subject specific lists of texts can be created on Wikisource as portals. The list on Wikipedia can therefore be replaced with a single link to the portal on Wikisource.

NB: This has the advantage of also reducing the use of Wikisource citations as external links.

Method

[edit]
  1. Create the portal on Wikisource.
    • The name of the portal is likely to be the same as the article, although this may vary.
    • Follow the help documentation at Wikisource:Help:Portals.
  2. Cut and paste the links from Wikipedia to Wikisource.
    • Some changes will need to be made but a lot of the existing link information should still be valid. Citation template on Wikipedia with the name Cite X can often be replaced with equivalent templates with the name X link.
  3. Add the {{wikisource portal}} template to the Wikipedia article instead of the linkfarm.
  4. Index the new Wikisource portal as appropriate on Wikisource:Portal:Index.
